A prospective analysis of the efficiency in the reorganisation process of Italian seaports

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to compare the competitiveness of Italian seaports in terms of efficiency scores as a result of significant policy changes adopted in September 2016. An appropriate data set on seaport activities is used that consists of input and output variables obtained by fixing the statistical classification of economic activities (NACE codes) of a sample of 10,763 active firms involved in the new Italian Port Network Authorities (AdSPs). The investigation analyses the major causes of inefficiency and may be viewed as an analysis of the potential of each AdSP, rather than an analysis based on already existing entities. In the authors’ opinion, the results of the data envelopment analysis (DEA) are suitable to support policy decisions designed to improve operational performance of inefficient AdSPs. The empirical analysis reveals several findings that can be extended to different territorial districts

Performance assessment of major European ports: an empirical investigation

    Get PDF
In the recent literature, the strategic relevance of ports has improved, and this paper provides a comparative analysis of 24 European ports. The port performance has been evaluated considering data envelopment analysis and Shephard’s distance function. This latter approach offers an alternative method to address a significant restraint of the standard Stochastic Frontier when the model needs to consider multiple outputs. From a policy point of view, the conclusion could offer valuable insights to support policy measures targeted to expand port efficiency. The findings obtained from the analysis reveal that several contextual indicators must be included in benchmark analysis

Correlated Mott insulators in a strong electric field: The effects of phonon renormalization

We characterize the response of a Mott insulating system to a static electric field in terms of its conducting and spectral properties. Dissipation is included by a coupling to fermionic baths and to either optical or acoustic phonons. This paper extends and completes the analysis made in a previous work by the authors [arXiv:2207.01921]. In the present work phonons are included diagrammatically within the Migdal approximation by also including self-consistency from the electronic feedback. The nonequilibrium steady-state is addressed by means of the dynamical mean-field theory based on the nonequilibrium Green's function approach, while the so-called auxiliary master equation approach is employed as impurity solver. With optical phonons the self-consistency suppresses the steady-state current at the onset of the metallic phase with respect to the nonself-consistent case. This is due to the interaction of phonons with the hot electrons of the lattice which increases their temperature, thus providing a less effective relaxation channel for the current-induced Joule heat. In addition, in the case of optical phonons the results are essentially independent of the temperature of the fermionic baths, as the latter is sensibly smaller than their characteristic frequency. On the other hand, with acoustic phonons the steady-state current is slightly suppressed by the self-consistent treatment only at field strengths close to half of the gap, away from the metallic phase, and especially at very small phonon frequency. Also, in this case the results seem to slightly depend on the temperature of the fermionic baths.Comment: 14 pages, 19 figures, comments are welcom

Chapter Innovation and sustainability: the Italian scenario

Society and policy makers demand innovation systems oriented towards several goals of sustainable development. Therefore, recent literature has dedicated a growing interest to both innovation and sustainability in the pursuit of environmental, economic and social development; in addition, the emerging topic of ‘sustainable innovation’ (and ‘eco-innovation’) seems to combine the main features of them. The definition of these concepts has been significantly changed during the last decades, and a broad discussion continues today about which indicators should be used to measure innovation, sustainability and their combination. The current paper investigates this relationship, and - in the authors’ opinion - the research question connected to the impact of the innovative product (and service and process) solutions on sustainability can be addressed by means of a stable theoretical framework. To study the interaction between innovation and sustainability, the usage of specific territorial features might represent a useful perspective to manage short-and long-term environmental and economic issues. As for the theoretical model, the present article considers a specific technique suitable for investigating the entire set of characteristics involved in the model. From a public makers and managerial point of view, the possibility of improving the firm’ efficiencies in terms of several dimensions of sustainable innovation represents a relevant topic that must be encouraged

Chapter Sustainable Innovation: worldwide trends in the scientific production through a bibliometric study

    Get PDF
The scientific production on the Innovation, especially on Sustainable Innovation, has grown in recent years. Various expressions and definitions for sustainability and innovation have been reported in the literature. Sometimes the two concepts are combined and described with one term, Sustainable Innovation. Research on sustainable innovation has grown in popularity due to the need to incorporate sustainability within business practices. The purpose of this study is to investigate the status and the evolution of the scientific studies on this topic and identify the worldwide trends in scientific production over time through a research conducted on the metadata of Web of Science, a database commonly used by researchers. A bibliometric analysis has been developed to analyse a total of 1,511 documents published between 2000 and 2021 in order to discover the research trends in this field and the main dimensions and words related to the term “Sustainable Innovation”

Endothelin-1[1–31], acting as an ETA-receptor selective agonist, stimulates proliferation of cultured rat zona glomerulosa cells

AbstractEndothelin-1 (ET-1)[1–31] is a novel hypertensive peptide that mimics many of the vascular effects of the classic 21 amino acid peptide ET-1[1–21]. However, at variance with ET-1[1–21] that enhances aldosterone secretion from cultured rat zona glomerulosa (ZG) cells by acting via ETB receptors, ET-1[1–31] did not elicit such effect. Both ET-1[1–21] and ET-1[1–31] raised the proliferation rate of cultured ZG cells, the maximal effective concentration being 10−8 M. This effect was blocked by the ETA-receptor antagonist BQ-123 and unaffected by the ETB-receptor antagonist BQ-788. Quantitative autoradiography showed that ET-1[1–21] displaced both [125I]PD-151242 binding to ETA receptors and [125I]BQ-3020 binding to ETB receptors in both rat ZG and adrenal medulla, while ET-1[1–31] displaced only [125I]BQ-3020 binding. The tyrosine kinase (TK) inhibitor tyrphostin-23 and the p42/p44 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor PD-98059 abolished the proliferogenic effect of ET-1[1–31], while the protein kinase-C (PKC) inhibitor calphostin-C significantly reduced it. ET-1[1–31] (10−8 M) stimulated TK and MAPK activity of dispersed ZG cells, an effect that was blocked by BQ-123. The stimulatory action of ET-1[1–31] on TK activity was annulled by tyrphostin-23, while that on MAPK activity was reduced by calphostin-C and abolished by either tyrphostin-23 and PD-98059. These data suggest that ET-1[1–31] is a selective agonist of the ETA-receptor subtype, and enhances proliferation of cultured rat ZG cells through the PKC- and TK-dependent activation of p42/p44 MAPK cascade

Circulating pre-treatment Epstein-Barr virus DNA as prognostic factor in locally-advanced nasopharyngeal cancer in a nonendemic area

The prognostic value of pre-treatment Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) DNA viral load for non-endemic, locally-advanced, EBV-related nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) patients is yet to be defined. All patients with EBV encoded RNA (EBER)-positive NPC treated at our Institution from 2005 to 2014 with chemotherapy (CT) concurrent with radiation (RT) +/- induction chemotherapy (ICT) were retrospectively reviewed. Pre-treatment baseline plasma EBV DNA (b-EBV DNA) viral load was detected and quantified by PCR. Median b-EBV DNA value was correlated to potential influencing factors by univariate analysis. Significant variables were then extrapolated and included in a multivariate linear regression model. The same variables, including b-EBV DNA, were correlated with Disease Free Survival (DFS) and Overall Survival (OS) by univariate and multivariate analysis. A total of 130 locally-advanced EBER positive NPC patients were evaluated. Overall, b-EBV DNA was detected in 103 patients (79.2%). Median viral load was 554 copies/mL (range 50-151075), and was positively correlated with T stage (p= 0.002), N3a-b vs N0-1-2 stage (p= 0.048), type of treatment (ICT followed by CTRT, p= 0.006) and locoregional and/or distant disease recurrence (p= 0.034). In the overall population, DFS and OS were significantly longer in patients with pre-treatment negative EBV DNA than in positive subjects at the multivariate analysis. Negative b-EBV DNA can be considered as prognostic biomarker of longer DFS and OS in NPC in non-endemic areas. This finding needs confirmation in larger prospective series, with standardized and inter-laboratory harmonized method of plasma EBV DNA quantificatio
