    Estimating probabilities from experimental frequencies

    Estimating the probability distribution 'q' governing the behaviour of a certain variable by sampling its value a finite number of times most typically involves an error. Successive measurements allow the construction of a histogram, or frequency count 'f', of each of the possible outcomes. In this work, the probability that the true distribution be 'q', given that the frequency count 'f' was sampled, is studied. Such a probability may be written as a Gibbs distribution. A thermodynamic potential, which allows an easy evaluation of the mean Kullback-Leibler divergence between the true and measured distribution, is defined. For a large number of samples, the expectation value of any function of 'q' is expanded in powers of the inverse number of samples.     Electrodeposition from Deep Eutectic Solvents

    Deep eutectic solvents constitute a class of compounds sharing many similarities with properly named ionic liquids. The accepted definition of ionic liquid is a fluid (liquid for T<100 °C) consisting of ions, while DES are eutectic mixtures of Lewis or Brønsted acids and bases. Their most attractive properties are the wide potential windows and the chemical properties largely different from aqueous solutions. In the last few decades, the possibility to electrodeposit decorative and functional coatings employing deep eutectic solvents as electrolytes has been widely investigated. A large number of the deposition procedures described in literature, however, cannot find application in the industrial practice due to competition with existing processes, cost or difficult scalability. From one side, there is the real potential to replace existing plating protocols and to find niche applications for high added-value productions; to the other one, this paves the path towards the electrodeposition of metals and alloys thermodynamically impossible to be obtained via usual aqueous solution processes. The main aim of this chapter is therefore the critical discussion of the applicability of deep eutectic solvents to the electrodeposition of metals and alloys, with a particular attention to the industrial and applicative point of view

    Impaired temporal processing of tactile and proprioceptive stimuli in cerebellar degeneration.

    Performance of timed motor sequences relies on the cerebellum and basal ganglia, which integrate proprioceptive information during the motor task and set internal timing mechanisms. Accordingly, these structures are also involved in other temporal processes, such as the discrimination of the different afferent information in the domain of time. In the present study we tested temporal processing of proprioceptive and tactile stimuli in 20 patients with neurodegenerative cerebellar ataxia and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. Tactile temporal discrimination threshold was defined as the value at which subjects recognized the two stimuli as asynchronous. Temporal discrimination movement threshold of the first dorsal interosseous and flexor carpi radialis was defined as the shortest interval between two paired electrical stimuli in which the subjects blindfolded perceived two separate index finger abductions and wrist flexions. Both tactile and movement temporal discrimination thresholds were higher in patients with cerebellar ataxia. No correlation was found with disease duration and severity. Our study demonstrates that temporal processing of tactile and proprioceptive stimuli is impaired in patients with cerebellar neurodegeneration and highlights the involvement of cerebellum in temporal processing of somatosensory stimuli of different type

    A Compact Solid State Detector for Small Angle Particle Tracking

    MIDAS (MIcrostrip Detector Array System) is a compact silicon tracking telescope for charged particles emitted at small angles in intermediate energy photonuclear reactions. It was realized to increase the angular acceptance of the DAPHNE detector and used in an experimental program to check the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule at the Mainz electron microtron, MAMI. MIDAS provides a trigger for charged hadrons, p/pi identification and particle tracking in the region 7 deg < theta < 16 deg.     The effect of oxygen in the photocatalytic oxidation pathways of perfluorooctanoic acid

    The influence of oxygen in the photocatalytic oxidation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) promoted by a commercial nano-sized titanium dioxide was studied by testing the reaction in different conditions: static air, oxygen flux, nitrogen flux and pre-saturated nitrogen flux. The reaction was monitored by Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis and Ionic Chromatography (IC). Shorter chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs; C-n, n = 1-7) intermediate degradation products were quantitatively determined by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography combined with Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS) analysis. The presence of shorter chain PFCAs in solution was also monitored by F-19 NMR. The experimental findings are in agreement with two major oxidative pathways: C-n -> Cn-1 photo-redox and beta-scissions routes mediated by COF2 elimination. Depending on the experimental conditions, the mutually operating mechanisms could be unbalanced up to the complete predominance of one pathway over the other. In particular, the existence of the beta-scissions route with COF2 elimination was corroborated by the isolation and characterization of carbonyl difluoride, a predicted fluorinated decomposition by-product

    Evolution and architecture of a West Mediterranean Upper Pleistocene to Holocene coastal apron-fan system

    The Quaternary deposits of tectonically stable areas are a powerful tool to investigate high-frequency climate variations (<10 ka) and to distinguish allogenic and autogenic factors controlling deposition. Therefore, an Upper Pleistocene—Holocene coastal apron-fan system in north—western Sardinia (Porto Palmas, Italy) was studied to investigate the relations between climate changes, sea-level fluctuations and sediment source-supply that controlled its development. The sedimentary sequence records the strong influence of local (wet/dry) and worldwide (sea-level) environmental variations in the sedimentation and preservation of the deposits. A multi-disciplinary approach allowed subdivision of the succession into four major, unconformity-bounded stratigraphic units: U1 U2, U3 and U4. Unit U1, tentatively dated to the warm and humid Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 5, consists of sandy, gravelly coastal/beach deposits developed during high sea-level in low-lying areas. Unit U2 consists of debris-flow dominated fan-deposits (ca 74 ka; MIS 4), preserved as partial fills of small valleys and coves. Unit U2 is mainly composed of reddish silty conglomerate to pebbly siltstones sourced from the Palaeozoic metamorphic inland hills (bedrock), superficially disintegrated during the preceding warm, vegetation-rich MIS 5. The cold and semi-arid climate strongly reduced vegetation cover along the valley flanks. Therefore, sediment gravity-flow processes, possibly activated by rainstorms, led to deposition of debris-flow dominated fans. Unit U3 consists of water-flow dominated alluvial-fan deposits (ca 47 to 23 ka; MIS 3), developed on a slightly inclined coastal plain. Unit U3 is composed of sandstone and sandy conglomerate fed from two main sediment sources: metamorphic inland bedrock and Quaternary bioclastic-rich shelf-derived sands. During this cold phase, sea-level dropped sufficiently to expose bioclastic sands accumulated on the shelf. Frequent climate fluctuations favoured inland aeolian transport of sand during dry phases, followed by reworking of the aeolian bodies by flash floods during wet phases. Bedrock-derived fragments mixed with water-reworked, wind-blown sands led to the development of water-flow dominated fans. The Dansgaard—Oeschger events possibly associated with sand landward deflation and main fan formations are Dansgaard—Oeschger 13 (ca 47 ka), Dansgaard—Oeschger 8 (ca 39 ka) and Dansgaard—Oeschger 2 (ca 23 ka). No record of sedimentation during MIS 2 was observed. Finally, bioclastic-rich aeolianites (Unit U4, ca 10 to 5 ka; MIS 1), preserved on a coastal slope, were developed during the Holocene transgression (ca 10 to 5 ka; MIS 1). The studied sequence shows strong similarities with those of other Mediterranean sites; it is, however, one of the few where the main MIS 4 and MIS 3 climatic fluctuations are registered in the sedimentary record

    Investigation of olfactory interactions of low levels of five off-flavour causing compounds in a red wine matrix

Compounds were characterised at peri- and sub-threshold concentrations using a partial D-optimal statistical design and response surface methodology. Results indicated that complex mixtures in red wine elicit an olfactory response that could not be predicted from the attributes or descriptors of single compounds. Positive sweet/fruity attributes were more intense in solutions containing fewer off-flavour compounds. Novel findings of this study include that IBMP at sub- and peri-threshold levels shows perceptual interaction with volatile phenols at the same levels, and samples containing combinations of these compounds manifested herbaceous and burnt characteristics. Olfactory interactions of this many off-flavour compounds have not been investigated previously in one study. The findings have direct implications for wines made from cultivars that are known to contain these compounds, and add to the understanding of the behaviour and impact of very low levels (peri- and sub-threshold) of volatile phenols, IBMP, and TCA derived from various sources during winemaking.https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0963996919307641?via%3DihubPublishers versio
