Inland prawn fisheries of India and their development

    Get PDF
The magnitude and disposition of the inland prawn fisheries resources of the country have been described. The lack of adequate knowledge of the capture fisheries resources has been pointed out and the necessity for an organised survey of the resources and research to formulate measures for their proper management emphasised. The existing methods of prawn farming in the country have been described and the need for research for maximising yields from culture fisheries of prawn has been highlighted. Measures for immediate development of prawn fisheries of the country have also been discussed

Expert Systems for Environmental Screening. An Application in the Lower Mekong Basin

    Get PDF
This research report describes MEXSES, a rule-based expert system for environmental impact assessment at a screening level, implemented for the analysis of water resources development projects in the Lower Mekong Basin. The report makes a brief review of environmental impact assessment methods and tools. It discusses expert systems technology, with emphasis on environmental applications. The Lower Mekong Basin and its specific environmental problems, as well as the Mekong Secretariat's environmental policy are examined. Subsequently, the software system is described from a user's perspective, followed by a detailed description of the methodology employed and its implementation. In the final chapter, a number of issues around the successful application of such a system are discussed, including a number of suggested improvements and extensions to the current operational prototype

On some ophichthyid larvae from the Indian coastal waters

Since describing some leptocephali and elvers collected from the estuaries of Bengal and Orissa (Jones and Pantulu, 1952 and Pantulu and Jones, 1954), larval forms of certain ophichthyid eels, not hitherto recorded, have been obtained from the coasts of Madras, Orissa, and Travancore. These larvae form the subject-matter of this account

On some larval and juvenile fishes from the Bengal and Orissa coasts

    Get PDF
The present account deals with a number of larval and juvenile fishes collected from the Bengal and Orissa coasts (Fig. 1) in 1952 and 1953 respectively. The collection from the Bengal Coast was made by the first author in 1952, while on a visit to the Sundarban areas of the 24 Parganas on board the M.F.V. Kerala of the West Bengal Fisheries Department and that from the Orissa Coast was made by the second author and Dr. V. G. Jhingran in 1953 on board the I.N.S. Investigator during one of its survey operations at the mouth of the Mahanadi. Our thanks are due to the West Bengal Fisheries Directorate and to the Indian Naval authorities for the facilities given aboard their vessels and for the co-operation extended by their officers. We also thank Dr. V. G. Jhingran who was in charge of making the collections on board the I.N.S. Investigator

Point defects and relaxation phenomena in crystals

    Get PDF
Group theoretical methods are developed for studying two types of point defects in crystals, namely trapped and untrapped ones, and the relaxation phenomena that arise therefrom. It is pointed out that a very close analogy exists between the relaxation modes on the one hand and normal oscillations on the other. This analogy enables us to utilise many of the concepts developed and the results obtained earlier in connection with studies on molecular spectra and Raman effect for an investigation of the relaxation phenomena. Simple rules are given for writing out the modes, ascertaining their activity or otherwise in regard to external electric and mechanical fields, evaluating the relaxation times and so on. Specific examples which are of practical interest are worked out under both the classes of defects studied. The methods developed can be applied to any general case

The nature of the basement in the Archaean Dharwar craton of southern India and the age of the Peninsular Gneiss

    Get PDF
The Archaean Peninsular Gneiss of southern India is considered by a number of workers to be the basement upon which the Dharwar supracrustal rocks were deposited. However, the Peninsular Gneiss in its present state is a composite gneiss formed by synkinematic migmatization during successive episodes of folding (DhF1, DhF1a and DhF2) that affected the Dharwar supracrustal rocks. An even earlier phase of migmatization and deformation (DhF∗ ) is evident from relict fabrics in small enclaves of gneissic tonalites and amphibolites within the Peninsular Gneiss. We consider these enclaves to represent the original basement for the Dharwar supracrustal rocks. Tonalitic pebbles in conglomerates of the Dharwar Supergroup confirm the inference that the supracrustal rocks were deposited on a gneissic basement. Whole rock Rb-Sr ages of gneisses showing only the DhF1 structures fall in the range of 3100-3200 Ma. Where the later deformation (DhF2) has been associated with considerable recrystallization, the Rb-Sr ages are between 2500 Ma and 2700 Ma. Significantly, a new Rb-Sr analysis of tonalitic gneiss pebbles in the Kaldurga conglomerate of the Dharwar sequence is consistent with an age of ~2500 Ma and not that of 3300 Ma reported earlier by Venkatasubramanian and Narayanaswamy (1974). Pb-Pb ages based on direct evaporation of detrital zircon grains from the metasedimentary rocks of the Dharwar sequence fall into two groups, 3300-3100 Ma, and 2800-3000 Ma. Stratigraphic, structural, textural and geochronologic data, therefore, indicate that the Peninsular Gneiss of the Dharwar craton evolved over a protracted period of time ranging from > 3300 Ma to 2500 Ma

Which commercial partners are important for the most recently admitted EU countries?

    Get PDF
This paper describes the degree of trade integration inside the European Union (EU) after the fifth enlargement in 2004. To achieve this goal, we build a database of information on trade flows between the new EU countries (EU10) and 180 commercial partners in six different sectors from 1999 to 2011. Using the standard gravity model and estimating difference-in-differences specification, we analyze how joining the EU a¤ected the intensity and direction of the EU10's trade flows. Our results show that though trade exchanges between the EU10 and EU15 intensified after 2004, the impact of integration was much more significant to the EU10 group
