L’Ufficio
poi a Bologna nel 1881The Paris Universal Exhibition of 1878 represents a turning point for geological surveys in Italy. Just a few years earlier, that is immediately
after the Country Unification, the two national technical and scientific structures for this discipline were established: the Royal Geological
Committee in 1867 and the Royal Geological Survey in 1873. The former’s task was to coordinate the activities for the realization of the national geological mapping, which would be carried out by the geologists and engineers of the latter, at the time at the service of the Royal Corps of Mines of the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce. During the Paris Universal Exposition, the Royal Geological Survey showed a series of geologic and thematic maps, both in detail and synthesis scale, together with a series of cartographic production realized by some other authors on their own. At that time, this wide range of works represented the best outcome in the field of geological production in our Country, to which also the Exposition Jury attached a high scientific and technical value and eventually awarded them numerous prizes. Besides the official ones, the most important recognition, at least for the community of geological scientists, was the assignment to Italy to organize the 2nd International Geological Congress, which then took place in Bologna in 1881
Mineral resources mapping in the 18th century (Tuscany, Italy)
The Miscellanea di Piante section of the State Archives of Florence (SAF) preserves eight mining maps, drawn up during the Lorraine regency period of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany (1737-1765). In this article, we have analysed four maps produced in 1766 by Carlo Mazzoni, a Tuscan engineer, in Northern Tuscany (Apuan Alps, near Massa) and four maps made probably in 1760-1765 by Francis Anton Eegat - a German speaking technician - in Southern Tuscany (surroundings of Volterra and Massa Marittima - “Metal-bearing Hills”). This paper aims to evaluate the maps beyond the simple representation of territory, through technical analysis of recorded symbols and data from a geological-mining point of view. Upon completion of this analysis, it will be possible to understand what practical knowledge of mineral resources was available in the 18th century, before the foundation of mining academies
Ecosystem Services and Territorial Resilience: The Role of Green and Blue Infrastructure
Responding to the new environmental, ecological, and social emergencies
requires a shift in strategies and urban design models. In the contexts of sustainability
and resilience, green and blue infrastructure (GBI) is a wide-ranging concept that
can help overcome the usual dichotomies of urban growth versus green or the built
environment versus nature. This provides different benefits, both environmental and
ecological and social and economic. In urban contexts, green spaces play a strategic
role due to the number of typologies and functions that vary from neighborhood
spaces to green, play, and sports facilities to protected areas of territorial scale. In
this way, the planning and design of GBI take on the triple objective of regenerating
fragile and degraded ecosystems from an environmental, social, and economic point
of view. Focusing on this assumption, we describe how the GBI that develops along
the axe of the Stura di Lanzo river in a multiscalar mosaic of soils at both local and
territorial levels can determine options for the ecosystem quality of the metropolitan
area of northern Turin. We suppose that mapping ecosystem services (based on a
correct land use/land cover design) can support designing new urban and regional
plans to improve resilience
Applying a Marxist methodology, the Historians’ Group has been able to combine the search for a popular revolutionary tradition (source of inspiration also for political militants) with the analysis and explanation of the historical phases that stimulated the birth and development of industrial capitalism in Britain, from an economic, social, and cultural point of view. At the same time, this group of historians combined the rigorous scientific method of Marxist political economy and historical and dialectical materialism (history as science) with a strong anti-mechanistic spirit, that led to study the "”human factor”(history as poetry) and to keep it always in great regard.
