Objective: Hypertension an important global health challenge is the prevalent cause of cardiovascular disease. Natural products are emerging as new therapeutic tools in the management of hypertension due to side effects and the patient's adherence of the existing treatments. In the present study, we investigated the antihypertensive effect of the Punica granatum juice in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)–salt model of hypertension in rats. Methods: Antihypertensive activity was evaluated in P. granatum juice extract (PGJ) (PJ-100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg; p.o.) for 4 weeks in DOCA treated rats. Blood pressure by non-invasive (indirect) method and invasive method was measured. Further, vascular reactivity to noradrenaline (1 μg/kg), adrenaline (1 μg/kg), phenylephrine (1 μg/kg), serotonin (1 μg/kg), and angiotensin II (25 ng/kg) was recorded. Antioxidant studies such as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS); while enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione reductase (GSH) in kidney tissue was also carried out. Results: Administration of PGJ (PJ-100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg; p.o.) for 4 weeks in DOCA treated rats significantly (p<0.05) reduced the mean arterial blood pressure and vascular reactivity changes to various catecholamines. PJ treatment significantly (p<0.05) decreased the levels of TBARS; while enzyme activity of SOD, CAT, and GSH in kidney tissue was significantly increased. Conclusion: Results of the present work suggest that PGJ has an antihypertensive action in unilateral nephrectomized DOCA-salt hypertensive rats and could be possible starting point for treatment of hypertension with increased patient adherence

Introduction: - Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disorder that may affect many tissues and organs – skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs and muscles. But principally attacks the joints, producing a non-supportive proliferative sinusitis that often progresses to destruction of the articular cartilage and ankylosis of the joints. Rhumapar tablet is a marketed polyherbal formulation believed to have the potential for providing relief to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Objective: - Investigations have been carried out using rats as experimental models, to assess the anti inflammatory and anti arthritic potential of Rhumapar tablet. In-vitro anti-oxidant study has been carried out using different in-vitro models.Result:- The results obtained demonstrate that Rhumapar tablet can significantly and dose-dependently inhibit carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema (the inhibition at 3 hour was greater than at 1 hour after induction of oedema).Tablet can also significantly inhibit granuloma formation in cotton pellet induced granuloma model. It also showed significant anti-arthritic activity in Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) induced arthritis. The responses were statistically significant when they were compared with the control. Conclusion: - It has been indicated that formulation possesses anti- inflammatory and anti-arthritic activities that are probably mediated through inhibition of prostanoid synthesis and free radical scavenging effect. Keywords: Rhumapar tablet, Rheumatoid arthritis, Anti-inflammatory activity, Anti-arthritic activity, Anti-oxidant activity

Mid-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy for Estimation of Soil Properties of Alfisols from Eastern India

Mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy is emerging as one of the most promising technologies, as it is a rapid and cost-effective alternative to routine laboratory analysis for many soil properties. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of mid-infrared spectroscopy for the rapid and nondestructive measurement of some important soil properties of Alfisols. A total of 336 georeferenced soil samples fromthe 0–15 cm soil layer of Alfisols that were collected from the eastern Indian states of Odisha and Jharkhand were used. The partial least-squares regression (PLSR), random forest, and support vector machine regression techniques were compared for the calibration of the spectral data with the wet chemistry soil data. The PLSR-based predictive models performed better than the other two regression techniques for all the soil properties, except for the electrical conductivity (EC). Good predictions with independent validation datasets were obtained for the clay and sand percentages and for the soil organic carbon (SOC) content, while satisfactory predictions were achieved for the silt percentage and the pH value. However, the performance of the predictive models was poor in the case of the EC and the extractable nutrients, such as the available phosphorus and potassium contents of the soil. Specific regions of the MIR spectra that contributed to the prediction of the soil SOC, the pH, and the clay and sand percentages were identified. The study demonstrates the potential of the MIR spectroscopic technique in the simultaneous estimation of the SOC content, the sand, clay, and silt percentages, and the pH of Alfisols from eastern India
