Variability in the maximum height of the ionospheric F2-layer over Millstone Hill (September 1998?March 2000); influence from below and above
International audienceThe basic aim of this ?case study' is to investigate the variability in the maximum height of the ionospheric F2-layer, hmF2, with periods of planetary waves (2?30 days), and to make an attempt to determine their origin. The hourly data of hmF2 above Millstone Hill (42.6° N, 71.5° W) during 01 September 1998 - 31 March 2000 were used for analysis. Three types of disturbances are studied in detail: (i) the 27- day oscillations observed in the hmF2 above Millstone Hill are generated by the geomagnetic activity and by the global-scale 27-day wave present in the zonal mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) neutral wind. The time delay between the 27-day oscillation in the zonal wind and that in the hmF2 is found to be 5?6 days, while between the 27-day oscillation in the geomagnetic activity and that in the hmF2 is found to be 0.8?1 day; (ii) the 16-day oscillation in the hmF2 observed during summer 1999 is probably generated by the global scale 16-day modulation of the semidiurnal tide observed in the MLT region during PSMOS campaign in June?August. We found that if the modulated semidiurnal tide mediates the planetary wave signature in the ionosphere, this planetary wave oscillation has to be best expressed in the amplitude and in the phase of the 12-h periodicity of the ionosphere; and (iii) the third type of disturbances studied is the quasi-2- day activity in the hmF2 that increases during geomagnetic disturbances. The strong pseudo diurnal periodicities generated during the geomagnetic storms can interact between each other and produce the quasi-2-day oscillations in the ionosphere
Extreme value distributions and Renormalization Group
In the classical theorems of extreme value theory the limits of suitably
rescaled maxima of sequences of independent, identically distributed random
variables are studied. So far, only affine rescalings have been considered. We
show, however, that more general rescalings are natural and lead to new limit
distributions, apart from the Gumbel, Weibull, and Fr\'echet families. The
problem is approached using the language of Renormalization Group
transformations in the space of probability densities. The limit distributions
are fixed points of the transformation and the study of the differential around
them allows a local analysis of the domains of attraction and the computation
of finite-size corrections.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. Final versio
Formation of oxide fuels on VT6 alloy in the conditions of anodial polarization in solutions H₂SO₄
Гранична товщина плівки визначається заданою величиною U i не залежить вiд iнших параметрiв електролiзу. Для ряду однакових значень U залежнiсть τ–j має лiнiйну форму. Колір оксидної плiвки визначається значенням напруги i не залежить від густини струму та концентрацiї електролiту. Встановлена вiдповiднiсть кольору плiвки i величини U в діапазоні значень 10-100 В.

A Link between Variability of the Semidiurnal Tide and Planetary Waves in the Opposite Hemisphere
Horizontal wind observations over four years from the meteor radar at Esrange (68 deg N) are analyzed to determine the variability of the semidiurnal tide. Simultaneous global observations of temperature and geopotential from the SABER satellite instrument are used to construct time series of planetary wave amplitudes and geostrophic mean zonal wind. During NH summer and fall, the temporal variability of the semidiurnal tide at Esrange is found to be well correlated with the amplitude of planetary wavenumber 1 in the stratosphere in high southern latitudes (i.e., in the opposite hemisphere). The correlations indicate that a significant part of the tidal variations at Esrange is due to dynamical interactions in the Southern Hemisphere. Other times of the year do not indicate a corresponding robust correlation pattern for the Esrange tides over multiple years
Signatures of 3?6 day planetary waves in the equatorial mesosphere and ionosphere
International audienceCommon periodic oscillations have been observed in meteor radar measurements of the MLT winds at Cariri (7.4° S, 36.5° W) and Ascension Island (7.9° S, 14.4° W) and in the minimum ionospheric virtual height, h'F, measured at Fortaleza (3.9° S, 38.4° W) in 2004, all located in the near equatorial region. Wavelet analysis of these time series reveals that there are 3?4-day, 6?8-day and 12?16-day oscillations in the zonal winds and h'F. The 3?4 day oscillation appeared as a form of a wave packet from 7?17 August 2004. From the wave characteristics analyzed this might be a 3.5-day Ultra Fast Kelvin wave. The 6-day oscillation in the mesosphere was prominent during the period of August to November. In the ionosphere, however, it was apparent only in November. Spectral analysis suggests that this might be a 6.5-day wave previously identified. The 3.5-day and 6.5-day waves in the ionosphere could have important roles in the initiation of equatorial spread F (plasma bubble). These waves might modulate the post-sunset E×B uplifting of the base of the F-layer via the induced lower thermosphere zonal wind and/or the E-region conductivity

Observations of the phase-locked 2 day wave over the Australian sector using medium-frequency radar and airglow data
Extent: 22p.The quasi 2 day wave, with a nominal mean period just above 50 h, is a significant feature of the 80–100 km altitude region in both hemispheres. It becomes particularly prominent in the Southern Hemisphere summer at midlatitudes where, a short time after summer solstice, its amplitude rapidly increases and its mean period is found to be approximately 48 h, producing an oscillation phase locked in local time. This lasts for a few weeks. Presented here are observations of the meridional winds and airglow over two sites in Australia, for 4 years during the austral summers of 2003–2006. We show that during those times when the large-amplitude phase-locked 2 day wave (PL-TDW) is present the diurnal tide greatly decreases. This is consistent with the Walterscheid and Vincent (1996) model in which the PL-TDW derives its energy from a parametric excitation by the diurnal tide. These data also show that the diurnal tide is more suppressed and the PL-TDW amplitude is larger in odd-numbered years, suggesting a biannual effect. The airglow data indicated that, for the PL-TDW, the winds and temperature are nearly out of phase. When the PL-TDW is present airglow amplitudes can become quite large, a result dependent on the local time of the PL-TDW maximum. The airglow intensity response was, in general, much larger than what would be expected from the airglow temperature response, suggesting that the PL-TDW is causing a significant composition change possibly due to minor constituent transport.J.
