InPBi Single Crystals Grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy
InPBi was predicted to be the most robust infrared optoelectronic material but also the most difficult to synthesize within In-VBi (V = P, As and Sb) 25 years ago. We report the first successful growth of InPBi single crystals with Bi concentration far beyond the doping level by gas source molecular beam epitaxy. The InPBi thin films reveal excellent surface, structural and optical qualities making it a promising new IIIâV compound family member for heterostructures. The Bi concentration is found to be 2.4 ± 0.4% with 94 ± 5% Bi atoms at substitutional sites. Optical absorption indicates a band gap of 1.23â
eV at room temperature while photoluminescence shows unexpectedly strong and broad light emission at 1.4â2.7â

Single Spin Asymmetry in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at GeV
We report a high precision measurement of the transverse single spin
asymmetry at the center of mass energy GeV in elastic
proton-proton scattering by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The was measured
in the four-momentum transfer squared range \GeVcSq, the region of a significant interference between the
electromagnetic and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The measured values of
and its -dependence are consistent with a vanishing hadronic spin-flip
amplitude, thus providing strong constraints on the ratio of the single
spin-flip to the non-flip amplitudes. Since the hadronic amplitude is dominated
by the Pomeron amplitude at this , we conclude that this measurement
addresses the question about the presence of a hadronic spin flip due to the
Pomeron exchange in polarized proton-proton elastic scattering.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
Zn-Neighbor Cu NQR in Zn-Substituted YBa2Cu3O7-d and YBa2Cu4O8
We studied local electronic states near Zn in optimally doped
YBa(CuZn_x)O and underdoped
YBa(CuZn_x)O via satellite signals of plane-site Cu(2)
nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectra. From the relative intensity of Cu
NQR spectra, the satellite signals are assigned to Zn-neighbor Cu NQR lines.
The Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time of the satellite signal is shorter
than that of the main signal, which indicates that the magnetic correlation is
locally enhanced near Zn both for the underdoped and the optimally doped
systems. The pure YBaCuO is a stoichiometric, homogenous,
underdoped electronic system; nevertheless, the Zn-induced inhomogeneous
magnetic response in the CuO plane is more marked than that of the
optimally doped YBaCuO.Comment: 9 pages including 8 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Effect of event selection on jetlike correlation measurement in d+Au collisions at sNN=200Â GeV
AbstractDihadron correlations are analyzed in sNN=200Â GeV d+Au collisions classified by forward charged particle multiplicity and zero-degree neutral energy in the Au-beam direction. It is found that the jetlike correlated yield increases with the event multiplicity. After taking into account this dependence, the non-jet contribution on the away side is minimal, leaving little room for a back-to-back ridge in these collisions
J/Ï polarization in p+p collisions at s=200 GeV in STAR
AbstractWe report on a polarization measurement of inclusive J/Ï mesons in the di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity at 2<pT<6 GeV/c in p+p collisions at s=200 GeV. Data were taken with the STAR detector at RHIC. The J/Ï polarization measurement should help to distinguish between different models of the J/Ï production mechanism since they predict different pT dependences of the J/Ï polarization. In this analysis, J/Ï polarization is studied in the helicity frame. The polarization parameter λΞ measured at RHIC becomes smaller towards high pT, indicating more longitudinal J/Ï polarization as pT increases. The result is compared with predictions of presently available models
Beam-energy Dependence Of Charge Balance Functions From Au + Au Collisions At Energies Available At The Bnl Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientĂfico e TecnolĂłgico (CNPq)Balance functions have been measured in terms of relative pseudorapidity (Îη) for charged particle pairs at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider from Au + Au collisions at sNN=7.7GeV to 200 GeV using the STAR detector. These results are compared with balance functions measured at the CERN Large Hadron Collider from Pb + Pb collisions at sNN=2.76TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The width of the balance function decreases as the collisions become more central and as the beam energy is increased. In contrast, the widths of the balance functions calculated using shuffled events show little dependence on centrality or beam energy and are larger than the observed widths. Balance function widths calculated using events generated by UrQMD are wider than the measured widths in central collisions and show little centrality dependence. The measured widths of the balance functions in central collisions are consistent with the delayed hadronization of a deconfined quark gluon plasma (QGP). The narrowing of the balance function in central collisions at sNN=7.7 GeV implies that a QGP is still being created at this relatively low energy. © 2016 American Physical Society.942CNPq, Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientĂfico e TecnolĂłgicoMinistry of Education and Science of the Russian FederationMOE, Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of ChinaMOST, Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of ChinaNRF-2012004024, National Research FoundationNSF, National Stroke FoundationConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientĂfico e TecnolĂłgico (CNPq
Search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect in Au+Au collisions at GeV with the STAR forward Event Plane Detectors
A decisive experimental test of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is
considered one of the major scientific goals at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion
Collider (RHIC) towards understanding the nontrivial topological fluctuations
of the Quantum Chromodynamics vacuum. In heavy-ion collisions, the CME is
expected to result in a charge separation phenomenon across the reaction plane,
whose strength could be strongly energy dependent. The previous CME searches
have been focused on top RHIC energy collisions. In this Letter, we present a
low energy search for the CME in Au+Au collisions at
GeV. We measure elliptic flow scaled charge-dependent correlators relative to
the event planes that are defined at both mid-rapidity and at
forward rapidity . We compare the results based on the
directed flow plane () at forward rapidity and the elliptic flow plane
() at both central and forward rapidity. The CME scenario is expected
to result in a larger correlation relative to than to , while
a flow driven background scenario would lead to a consistent result for both
event planes[1,2]. In 10-50\% centrality, results using three different event
planes are found to be consistent within experimental uncertainties, suggesting
a flow driven background scenario dominating the measurement. We obtain an
upper limit on the deviation from a flow driven background scenario at the 95\%
confidence level. This work opens up a possible road map towards future CME
search with the high statistics data from the RHIC Beam Energy Scan Phase-II.Comment: main: 8 pages, 5 figures; supplementary material: 2 pages, 1 figur
Search for Tensor, Vector, and Scalar Polarizations in the Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background
The detection of gravitational waves with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo has enabled novel tests of general relativity, including direct study of the polarization of gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for only two tensor gravitational-wave polarizations, general metric theories can additionally predict two vector and two scalar polarizations. The polarization of gravitational waves is encoded in the spectral shape of the stochastic gravitational-wave background, formed by the superposition of cosmological and individually unresolved astrophysical sources. Using data recorded by Advanced LIGO during its first observing run, we search for a stochastic background of generically polarized gravitational waves. We find no evidence for a background of any polarization, and place the first direct bounds on the contributions of vector and scalar polarizations to the stochastic background. Under log-uniform priors for the energy in each polarization, we limit the energy densities of tensor, vector, and scalar modes at 95% credibility to Ω0T<5.58Ă10-8, Ω0V<6.35Ă10-8, and Ω0S<1.08Ă10-7 at a reference frequency f0=25 Hz. © 2018 American Physical Society
All-sky search for long-duration gravitational wave transients with initial LIGO
We present the results of a search for long-duration gravitational wave transients in two sets of data collected by the LIGO Hanford and LIGO Livingston detectors between November 5, 2005 and September 30, 2007, and July 7, 2009 and October 20, 2010, with a total observational time of 283.0 days and 132.9 days, respectively. The search targets gravitational wave transients of duration 10-500 s in a frequency band of 40-1000 Hz, with minimal assumptions about the signal waveform, polarization, source direction, or time of occurrence. All candidate triggers were consistent with the expected background; as a result we set 90% confidence upper limits on the rate of long-duration gravitational wave transients for different types of gravitational wave signals. For signals from black hole accretion disk instabilities, we set upper limits on the source rate density between 3.4Ă10-5 and 9.4Ă10-4 Mpc-3 yr-1 at 90% confidence. These are the first results from an all-sky search for unmodeled long-duration transient gravitational waves. © 2016 American Physical Society
