A Multihorizon Approach for the Reliability Oriented Network Restructuring Problem, Considering Learning Effects, Construction Time, and Cables Maintenance Costs

    Get PDF
This paper presents a techno-economic optimisation tool to study how the power system expansion decisions can be taken in a more economical and efficient way, by minimising the consequent costs of network reinforcement and reconfiguration. Analyses are performed to investigate how the network reinforcement and reconfiguration should be planned, within a time horizon of several years, by continuously keeping the network feasibility and ability to satisfy the load. The main contribution of this study is the inclusion of key features within the mathematical model to enhance the investment decision making process. A representative maintenance cost of existing cables and apparatus is included, to analyse the influence of the historical performance of the electric items on the investment decisions. A multihorizon methodology is developed to take into account the long term variation of the demand, combined with the long term variation of cables maintenance costs. Moreover, technological learning coefficients are considered, to take into account the investment costs reductions that arise when an investment in network restructuring and/or reconfiguration is repeated throughout the years. Finally, construction time constraints are included to find a proper investment scheduling that allows a feasible power flow, also during the years required to build a new connection or restructure an existing one. This study is also providing recommendations for future research directions within the power system reliability field. The analyses show the important and urgent need of proper methodologies for a better definition of cables projected maintenance costs and learning coefficients dedicated to network restructuring, reconfiguration and expansion.Comment: 22 pages, 21 figure

Reliability of power system in terms of investments in network maintenance and restructuring for power distribution network has gained importance due to increase in distributed generation. To determine the reliability of the power distribution network, the state of power apparatus, losses in the network and consumer satisfaction indices are key factors. Considering the aforementioned, this paper proposes a holistic reliability framework for power distribution networks. The framework lists the following factors: life cycle of power apparatus, environmental and sociological, node reliability, arc reliability. A case study for reliability evaluation is performed on a modified IEEE 14 bus network. Furthermore, multiple scenarios of generation fault or outage are studied and results are presented. The key contribution of this paper is to present a novel and holistic reliability framework to model distribution network

Performance Comparison of PD Data Acquisition Techniques for Condition Monitoring of Medium Voltage Cables

    Get PDF
Already installed cables are aging and the cable network is growing rapidly. Improved condition monitoring methods are required for greater visibility of insulation defects in the cable networks. One of the critical challenges for continuous monitoring is the large amount of partial discharge (PD) data that poses constraints on the diagnostic capabilities. This paper presents the performance comparison of two data acquisition techniques based on phase resolved partial discharge (PRPD) and pulse acquisition (PA). The major contribution of this work is to provide an in-depth understanding of these techniques considering the perspective of randomness of the PD mechanism and improvements in the reliability of diagnostics. Experimental study is performed on the medium voltage (MV) cables in the laboratory environment. It has been observed that PRPD based acquisition not only requires a significantly larger amount of data but is also susceptible to losing the important information especially when multiple PD sources are being investigated. On the other hand, the PA technique presents improved performance for PD diagnosis. Furthermore, the use of the PA technique enables the efficient practical implementation of the continuous PD monitoring by reducing the amount of data that is acquired by extracting useful signals and discarding the silent data intervals.© 2020 by the authors. Identification and Location of PD Defects in Medium voltage Underground Power Cables Using High Frequency Current Transformer

Fault location is an important diagnostic task in condition monitoring of underground medium voltage cables. Available solutions are well capable of determining the location of a single partial discharge (PD) defect on a cable section. In case several PD defects are active simultaneously along a cable section, the interpretation of the measured data becomes complex to identify the presence of more than one PD sources. In this paper, experimental investigation of two PD defects/sources at different locations on a medium voltage (MV) cable section is presented. A high frequency current transformer is used for single end PD measurements. Time domain reflectometry-based in-depth study of the reflected pulses provides the most valuable information to identify the presence of PD sources which further leads to the location of the individual PD sources. In this paper, the proposed solution is presented for two PD sources, however, the same methodology can be extended to locate multiple PD sources on the cable.fi=vertaisarvioitu|en=peerReviewed

Electric vehicles charging infrastructure demand and deployment : challenges and solutions

    Get PDF
Present trends indicate that electrical vehicles (EVs) are favourable technology for road network transportation. The lack of easily accessible charging stations will be a negative growth driver for EV adoption. Consequently, the charging station placement and scheduling of charging activity have gained momentum among researchers all over the world. Different planning and scheduling models have been proposed in the literature. Each model is unique and has both advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, the performance of the models also varies and is location specific. A model suitable for a developing country may not be appropriate for a developed country and vice versa. This paper provides a classification and overview of charging station placement and charging activity scheduling as well as the global scenario of charging infrastructure planning. Further, this work provides the challenges and solutions to the EV charging infrastructure demand and deployment. The recommendations and future scope of EV charging infrastructure are also highlighted in this paper

    RNR: Reliability oriented Network Restructuring

This paper presents the reliability indicators for power system restructuring. A reliability oriented network restructuring (RNR) mathematical formulation is proposed for solving power grid expansion decision with non-linear AC-OPF. The microgrid structures are derived from the standard IEEE 14 bus system architecture. The proposed reliability framework is implemented with the set of reliability indicators for measuring the system performance. The model was solved using outer approximation algorithm. The analysis is conducted to investigate the importance of restructuring in an investment decision for the expansion. The results with a comparison between investment and investment with restructuring are outlined. Consequently the expansion considering the restructuring is found to be practical and feasible.RNR: Reliability oriented Network RestructuringacceptedVersio

The first-year students at the technical universities often face the problem of using the previously acquired knowledge at a higher level required by engineering education. To solve this problem, the authors developed a series of lectures dedicated to establishing theoretical background, based on simulations in DigSILENT Power Factory software. In the lectures, the physical values and quantities as well as the purpose and characteristics of the power equipment are explained on the example of the simple models
