SVOM pointing strategy: how to optimize the redshift measurements?
The Sino-French SVOM mission (Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable
Objects Monitor) has been designed to detect all known types of gamma-ray
bursts (GRBs) and to provide fast and reliable GRB positions. In this study we
present the SVOM pointing strategy which should ensure the largest number of
localized bursts allowing a redshift measurement. The redshift measurement can
only be performed by large telescopes located on Earth. The best scientific
return will be achieved if we are able to combine constraints from both space
segment (platform and payload) and ground telescopes (visibility).Comment: Proceedings of Gamma-Ray Bursts 2007 conference, Santa Fe, USA, 5-9

Strongly-coupled quantum critical point in an all-in-all-out antiferromagnet
Dimensionality and symmetry play deterministic roles in the laws of Nature.
They are important tools to characterize and understand quantum phase
transitions, especially in the limit of strong correlations between spin,
orbit, charge, and structural degrees of freedom. Using newly-developed,
high-pressure resonant x-ray magnetic and charge diffraction techniques, we
have discovered a quantum critical point in Cd2Os2O7 as the all-in-all-out
(AIAO) antiferromagnetic order is continuously suppressed to zero temperature
and, concomitantly, the cubic lattice structure continuously changes from space
group Fd-3m to F-43m. Surrounded by three phases of different time reversal and
spatial inversion symmetries, the quantum critical region anchors two phase
lines of opposite curvature, with striking departures from a mean-field form at
high pressure. As spin fluctuations, lattice breathing modes, and quasiparticle
excitations interact in the quantum critical region, we argue that they present
the necessary components for strongly-coupled quantum criticality in this
three-dimensional compound
The Formaldehyde Masers in Sgr B2: Very Long Baseline Array and Very Large Array Observations
Observations of two of the formaldehyde (H2CO) masers (A and D) in Sgr B2
using the VLBA+Y27 (resolution ~0.01") and the VLA (resolution ~9") are
presented. The VLBA observations show compact sources (<10 milliarcseconds, <80
AU) with brightness temperatures >10^8 K. The maser sources are partially
resolved in the VLBA observations. The flux densities in the VLBA observations
are about 1/2 those of the VLA; and, the linewidths are about 2/3 of the VLA
values. The applicability of a core-halo model for the emission distribution is
demonstrated. Comparison with earlier H2CO absorption observations and with
ammonia (NH3) observations suggests that H2CO masers form in shocked gas.
Comparison of the integrated flux densities in current VLA observations with
those in previous observations indicates that (1) most of the masers have
varied in the past 20 years, and (2) intensity variations are typically less
than a factor of two compared to the 20-year mean. No significant linear or
circular polarization is detected with either instrument.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, 5 tables, accepted to Ap
A knowledge-based approach to configuration layout, justification, and documentation
The design, development, and implementation is described of a prototype expert system which could aid designers and system engineers in the placement of racks aboard modules on Space Station Freedom. This type of problem is relevant to any program with multiple constraints and requirements demanding solutions which minimize usage of limited resources. This process is generally performed by a single, highly experienced engineer who integrates all the diverse mission requirements and limitations, and develops an overall technical solution which meets program and system requirements with minimal cost, weight, volume, power, etc. This system architect performs an intellectual integration process in which the underlying design rationale is often not fully documented. This is a situation which lends itself to an expert system solution for enhanced consistency, thoroughness, documentation, and change assessment capabilities
Exponential dichotomy for noninvertible linear difference equations: block triangular systems
In this paper, block upper triangular systems of linear difference equations are considered, in which the coefficient matrices are not assumed invertible. The relationship between the exponential dichotomy properties of such a system and its associated block diagonal system is studied. The reason it is important to study triangular systems is that any system of linear difference equations is kinematically similar to an upper triangular system. In the bounded invertible case, it is known that for equations on the intervals J = Z(+) or Z(-), a block upper triangular system has an exponential dichotomy if and only if the associated block diagonal system has one. However, when J = Z, only the sufficiency holds. The sufficiency extends to the noninvertible case, provided the off-diagonal matrices are bounded. However, the necessity does not hold even when J = Z(+) or Z(-). Nevertheless, if certain conditions are added, then the necessity does hold and it is also shown that these conditions are needed since it turns out that if both the triangular and diagonal systems have dichotomies, then these extra conditions must hold

A pilot study in using argumentation frameworks for online debates
We describe a pilot study in using argumentation frameworks obtained from an online debate to evaluate positions expressed in the debate. This pilot study aims at exploring the richness of Computational Argumentation methods and techniques for evaluating arguments to reason with the output of Argument Mining. It uses a hand-generated graphical representation of the debate as an intermediate representation from which argumentation frameworks can be extracted, but richer than any existing argumentation framework. The intermediate representation can provide insights for benchmark sets derived from online debates
