The hidden X-ray breaks in afterglow light curves
Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglow observations in the Swift era have a
perceived lack of achromatic jet breaks compared to the BeppoSAX, or pre-Swift
era. Specifically, relatively few breaks, consistent with jet breaks, are
observed in the X-ray light curves of these bursts. If these breaks are truly
missing, it has serious consequences for the interpretation of GRB jet
collimation and energy requirements, and the use of GRBs as standard candles.
Here we address the issue of X-ray breaks which are possibly 'hidden' and
hence the light curves are misinterpreted as being single power-laws. We show
how a number of precedents, including GRB 990510 & GRB 060206, exist for such
hidden breaks and how, even with the well sampled light curves of the Swift
era, these breaks may be left misidentified. We do so by synthesising X-ray
light curves and finding general trends via Monte Carlo analysis. Furthermore,
in light of these simulations, we discuss how to best identify achromatic

Relativistic Particle-In-Cell Simulation Studies of Prompt and Early Afterglows from GRBs
Nonthermal radiation observed from astrophysical systems containing
relativistic jets and shocks e.g. gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) active galactic
nuclei (AGNs) and microquasars commonly exhibit power-law emission spectra.
Recent PIC simulations of relativistic electron-ion (or electron-positron) jets
injected into a stationary medium show that particle acceleration occurs within
the downstream jet. In collisionless relativistic shocks particle (electron,
positron and ion) acceleration is due to plasma waves and their associated
instabilities (e.g. the Weibel (filamentation) instability) created in the
shock region. The simulations show that the Weibel instability is responsible
for generating and amplifying highly non-uniform small-scale magnetic fields.
These fields contribute to the electron's transverse deflection behind the jet
head. The resulting ``jitter'' radiation from deflected electrons has different
properties compared to synchrotron radiation which assumes a uniform magnetic
field. Jitter radiation may be important for understanding the complex time
evolution and/or spectra in gamma-ray bursts, relativistic jets in general and

Maintained physical activity and physiotherapy in the management of distal upper limb pain – a protocol for a randomised controlled trial (the arm pain trial)
<b>Background</b><p></p>
Distal upper limb pain (pain affecting the elbow, forearm, wrist, or hand) can be non-specific, or can arise from specific musculoskeletal disorders. It is clinically important and costly, the best approach to clinical management is unclear. Physiotherapy is the standard treatment and, while awaiting treatment, advice is often given to rest and avoid strenuous activities, but there is no evidence base to support these strategies. This paper describes the protocol of a randomised controlled trial to determine, among patients awaiting physiotherapy for distal arm pain, (a) whether advice to remain active and maintain usual activities results in a long-term reduction in arm pain and disability, compared with advice to rest; and (b) whether immediate physiotherapy results in a long-term reduction in arm pain and disability, compared with physiotherapy delivered after a seven week waiting list period.<p></p>
<b>Methods/Design</b><p></p>
Between January 2012 and January 2014, new referrals to 14 out-patient physiotherapy departments were screened for potential eligibility. Eligible and consenting patients were randomly allocated to one of the following three groups in equal numbers: 1) advice to remain active, 2) advice to rest, 3) immediate physiotherapy. Patients were and followed up at 6, 13, and 26 weeks post-randomisation by self-complete postal questionnaire and, at six weeks, patients who had not received physiotherapy were offered it at this time. The primary outcome is the proportion of patients free of disability at 26 weeks, as determined by the modified DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand) questionnaire.<p></p>
We hypothesise (a) that advice to maintain usual activities while awaiting physiotherapy will be superior than advice to rest the arm; and (b) that fast-track physiotherapy will be superior to normal (waiting list) physiotherapy. These hypotheses will be examined using an intention-to-treat analysis.<p></p>
<b>Discussion</b><p></p>
Results from this trial will contribute to the evidence base underpinning the clinical management of patients with distal upper limb pain, and in particular, will provide guidance on whether they should be advised to rest the arm or remain active within the limits imposed by their symptoms
GRB 070714B - Discovery of the Highest Spectroscopically Confirmed Short Burst Redshift
Gemini Nod & Shuffle spectroscopy on the host of the short GRB 070714B shows
a single emission line at 7167 angstroms which, based on a grizJHK photometric
redshift, we conclude is the 3727 angstrom [O II] line. This places the host at
a redshift of z=.923 exceeding the previous record for the highest
spectroscopically confirmed short burst redshift of z=.546 held by GRB 051221.
This dramatically moves back the time at which we know short bursts were being
formed, and suggests that the present evidence for an old progenitor population

Supersymmetric black rings and three-charge supertubes
We present supergravity solutions for 1/8-supersymmetric black supertubes
with three charges and three dipoles. Their reduction to five dimensions yields
supersymmetric black rings with regular horizons and two independent angular
momenta. The general solution contains seven independent parameters and
provides the first example of non-uniqueness of supersymmetric black holes. In
ten dimensions, the solutions can be realized as D1-D5-P black supertubes. We
also present a worldvolume construction of a supertube that exhibits three
dipoles explicitly. This description allows an arbitrary cross-section but

Practical Guidance for Integrating Data Management into Long-Term Ecological Monitoring Projects
Long-term monitoring and research projects are essential to understand ecological change and the effectiveness of management activities. An inherent characteristic of long-term projects is the need for consistent data collection over time, requiring rigorous attention to data management and quality assurance. Recent papers have provided broad recommendations for data management; however, practitioners need more detailed guidance and examples. We present general yet detailed guidance for the development of comprehensive, concise, and effective data management for monitoring projects. The guidance is presented as a graded approach, matching the scale of data management to the needs of the organization and the complexity of the project. We address the following topics: roles and responsibilities; consistent and precise data collection; calibration of field crews and instrumentation; management of tabular, photographic, video, and sound data; data completeness and quality; development of metadata; archiving data; and evaluation of existing data from other sources. This guidance will help practitioners execute effective data management, thereby, improving the quality and usability of data for meeting project objectives as well as broader meta-analysis and macrosystem ecology research
Quantifying the domestic building fabric 'performance gap'
In the UK, there is mounting evidence that the measured in situ performance of the building fabric in new build dwellings can be greater than that predicted, resulting in a significant building fabric ‘performance gap’. This paper presents the coheating test results from 25 new build dwellings built to Part L1A 2006 or better. Whilst the total number of dwellings reported here is small, the results suggest that a substantial ‘performance gap’ can exist between the predicted and measured performance of the building fabric, with the measured whole building U-value being just over 1.6 times greater than that predicted.
