    GRB-triggered searches for gravitational waves in LIGO data

    The LIGO gravitational wave detectors have recently reached their design sensitivity and finished a two-year science run. During this period one year of data with unprecedented sensitivity has been collected. I will briefly describe the status of the LIGO detectors and the overall quality of the most recent science run. I also will present results of a search for inspiral waveforms in gravitational wave data coincident with the short gamma ray burst detected on 1st February 2007, with its sky location error box overlapping a spiral arms of M31.     Help-Seeking Attitudes among Clinicians in Training: The Influence of Psychological Defensiveness

    The current study investigated whether psychologically-defensive clinicians-in-training were more resistant to engaging in personal therapy while pursuing a graduate degree in a mental health discipline. Participants were selected from graduate level mental health counseling and clinical psychology programs. Three groups were of interest: ‘manifestly distressed’ (MD), who report high levels of subjective distress; ‘illusory mental health’ (IMH), defined as individuals who report low levels of subjective distress but are identified by the Early Memories Test (EMT) as defensive; and ‘genuine mental health’ (GMH) individuals, rated as non-defensive on the EMT while reporting low subjective distress levels. The following measures were used to assess for the variables of interest: the Early Memory Index, the Trainees’ Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychotherapy Scale, and the Subjective Distress Scale. Findings included equally high ratings on the TATSPS among each of the three mental health groups and a substantial number of treatment hours reported by each of the three groups. Compared to GMH participants, IMH and MD participants attended significantly more hours of personal therapy, and mental health grouping influenced treatment seeking over and above the influence of attitudes measured with the TATSPS

    Interferometric molecular line observations of W51

    Observations are presented of the H II region complex in W51 made with a mm interferometer. W51 is a region of massive star formation approx. 7 kpc distant from the sun. This region has been well studied in both the IR and submillimeter, the radio, as well as the maser transitions. These previous observations have revealed three regions of interest: (1) W51MAIN, a know of bright maser emission near two compact H II regions W51e1 and W51e2 (W51MAIN is also the peak of the 400 micron emission indicating that the bulk of the mass is centered there; (2) W51IRS1 is a long curving structure seen at 20 micron and at 2 and 6 cm but not at 400 micron; (3) W51IRS2 (also known as W51NORTH) is another compact H II region slightly offset from an 8 and a 20 micron peak and a collection of masers. Some conclusions are as follows: (1) SO and H(13)CN emission are similar and coincide with outflow activity; (2) HCO+ spectra show evidence for overall collapse of the W51 cloud toward W51MAIN; (3) A previously undetected continuum peak, W51DUST, coincides with the molecular peak H(13)CN-4; and (4) Dust emission at 3.4 mm reveals that about half of the 400 micron emission comes from the ultracompact H II region e2, and the rest from W51e1 and W51DUST

    Mechanical Recycling of Automotive Composites for Use as Reinforcement in Thermoset Composites

    The aim of this research was to investigate the potential use of recycled glass fibre composite materials as a replacement for virgin reinforcing materials in new thermoset composites. Specifically the closed-loop mechanical recycling of composites used heavily in the automotive sector known as dough and sheet moulding composites, DMC and SMC respectively, are investigated. The recycling of glass reinforced thermoset polymer composite materials has been an area of investigation for many years and composites used in the automotive industry are of particular interest due to legislative and social pressures on the industry. The mechanical recycling process and then collection of useful fibrous grades of recycled materials, recyclate, by a novel air separation technique were investigated first. The properties of these recyclate fibres were characterised and compared directly with the properties of virgin glass fibres they were to be used to replace. Single fibre tensile tests were employed to compare the strengths of the fibres and single fibre pull-out tests were used to investigate the strength of the interface between the fibres and a polyester matrix. These tests showed the recyclate fibres to be weaker and have a poorer interface with the polyester matrix than the virgin glass fibres. Understanding the properties of the recyclate materials meant their reformulation into new composites could be carefully considered for the production of new high performance materials. Two grades of the collected recyclate materials were then reformulated in to new DMC and SMC composites, replacing percentages of the virgin glass fibre reinforcement. The mechanical properties of the resulting manufactured composites were characterised throughout for direct comparison against one another and an unmodified control material, using both three-point flexural tests and Charpy impact tests. Through the modification of existing manufacturing techniques and the development of novel production equipment it has been possible to successfully manufacture both DMC and SMC composites with the recyclate materials used to replace virgin glass fibres. Virgin glass fibres have successfully been replaced by recyclate materials without disrupting standard production techniques and with minimal reduction of the mechanical properties of the resulting composites. As the loadings of recyclate materials used were greatly increased both the flexural and impact strengths were significantly degraded and it was found that chemical modification of the composite could be used to improve these formulations. It has been shown that the recyclate materials should be considered and treated as a distinct reinforcing ingredient, separately from the remaining virgin glass fibres

    Afterglows of Gamma-Ray Bursts: Short vs. Long GRBs

    We compiled a large sample of Swift-era photometric data on long (Type II) and short (Type I) GRB afterglows. We compare the luminosity and energetics of the different samples to each other and to the afterglows of the pre-Swift era.     Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Glioblastoma: A Review

    INTRODUCTION In 2017, it is estimated that 26,070 patients will be diagnosed with a malignant primary brain tumor in the United States, with more than half having the diagnosis of glioblas- toma (GBM).1 Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a widely utilized examination in the diagnosis and post-treatment management of patients with glioblastoma; standard modalities available from any clinical MRI scanner, including T1, T2, T2-FLAIR, and T1-contrast-enhanced (T1CE) sequences, provide critical clinical information. In the last decade, advanced imaging modalities are increasingly utilized to further charac- terize glioblastomas. These include multi-parametric MRI sequences, such as dynamic contrast enhancement (DCE), dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), functional imaging, and spectroscopy (MRS), to further characterize glioblastomas, and significant efforts are ongoing to implement these advanced imaging modalities into improved clinical workflows and personalized therapy approaches.     NoAt the 2005 British Academy of Management conference several well-known economic geographers, including Neil Wrigley, Gordon Clark, and Susan Christopherson, called for management researchers to engage with economic geographers on interrelated geographical and managerial issues in the study of (retail) firms. In this commentary we reflect upon the present geography -management interface.We begin by considering the term `interdisciplinary research' and its relationship to any management - geography interface. This is followed by a context-specific discussion of international retailing and the role of research on the retail transnational corporation (TNC) in developing an interdisciplinary agenda. This commentary represents an initial more business and management focused response to the call from geography academics for more/better interdisciplinary research at the geography - management interface
