    Ependymal tumors constitute a clinicopathologically heterogeneous group of brain tumors. They vary in regard to their age at first symptom, localization, morphology and prognosis. Genetic data also suggests heterogeneity. We define a newly recognized subset of ependymal tumors, the trisomy 19 ependymoma. Histologically, they are compact lesions characterized by a rich branched capillary network amongst which tumoral cells are regularly distributed. When containing clear cells they are called clear cell ependymoma. Most trisomy 19 ependymomas are supratentorial WHO grade III tumors of the young. Genetically, they are associated with trisomy 19, and frequently with a deletion of 13q21.31-31.2, three copies of 11q13.3-13.4, and/or deletions on chromosome 9. These altered chromosomal regions are indicative of genes and pathways involved in trisomy 19 ependymoma tumorigenesis. Recognition of this genetico-histological entity allows better understanding and dissection of ependymal tumors

    Velocity-selective direct frequency-comb spectroscopy of atomic vapors

    We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of two-photon direct frequency-comb spectroscopy performed through velocity-selective excitation. In particular, we explore the effect of repetition rate on the 5S1/25D3/2,5/2\textrm{5S}_{1/2}\rightarrow \textrm{5D}_{3/2, 5/2} two-photon transitions excited in a rubidium atomic vapor cell. The transitions occur via step-wise excitation through the 5P1/2,3/2\textrm{5P}_{1/2, 3/2} states by use of the direct output of an optical frequency comb. Experiments were performed with two different frequency combs, one with a repetition rate of 925\approx 925 MHz and one with a repetition rate of 250\approx 250 MHz. The experimental spectra are compared to each other and to a theoretical model.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

    Magnetic field induced lattice anomaly inside the superconducting state of CeCoIn5_5: evidence of the proposed Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state

    Full text link
    We report high magnetic field linear magnetostriction experiments on CeCoIn5_5 single crystals. Two features are remarkable: (i) a sharp discontinuity in all the crystallographic axes associated with the upper superconducting critical field Bc2B_{c2} that becomes less pronounced as the temperature increases; (ii) a distinctive second order-like feature observed only along the c-axis in the high field (10 T BBc2 \lesssim B \leq B_{c2}) low temperature (TT \lesssim 0.35 K) region. This second order transition is observed only when the magnetic field lies within 20o^o of the ab-planes and there is no signature of it above Bc2B_{c2}, which raises questions regarding its interpretation as a field induced magnetically ordered phase. Good agreement with previous results suggests that this anomaly is related to the transition to the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconducting state.Comment: 3 figures, 5 page

    Mercury in human brain, blood, muscle and toenails in relation to exposure: an autopsy study

    Background: The main forms of mercury (Hg) exposure in the general population are methylmercury (MeHg) from seafood, inorganic mercury (I-Hg) from food, and mercury vapor (Hg0) from dental amalgam restorations. While the distribution of MeHg in the body is described by a one compartment model, the distribution of I-Hg after exposure to elemental mercury is more complex, and there is no biomarker for I-Hg in the brain. The aim of this study was to elucidate the relationships between on the one hand MeHg and I-Hg in human brain and other tissues, including blood, and on the other Hg exposure via dental amalgam in a fish-eating population. In addition, the use of blood and toenails as biological indicator media for inorganic and organic mercury (MeHg) in the tissues was evaluated. Methods: Samples of blood, brain (occipital lobe cortex), pituitary, thyroid, abdominal muscle and toenails were collected at autopsy of 30 deceased individuals, age from 47 to 91 years of age. Concentrations of total-Hg and I-Hg in blood and brain cortex were determined by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry and total-Hg in other tissues by sector field inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS). Results: The median concentrations of MeHg (total-Hg minus I-Hg) and I-Hg in blood were 2.2 and 1.0 μg/L, and in occipital lobe cortex 4 and 5 μg/kg, respectively. There was a significant correlation between MeHg in blood and occipital cortex. Also, total-Hg in toenails correlated with MeHg in both blood and occipital lobe. I-Hg in both blood and occipital cortex, as well as total-Hg in pituitary and thyroid were strongly associated with the number of dental amalgam surfaces at the time of death. Conclusion: In a fish-eating population, intake of MeHg via the diet has a marked impact on the MeHg concentration in the brain, while exposure to dental amalgam restorations increases the I-Hg concentrations in the brain. Discrimination between mercury species is necessary to evaluate the impact on Hg in the brain of various sources of exposure, in particular, dental amalgam exposure

    Time-resolved dynamics of electron wave packets in chaotic and regular quantum billiards with leads

    Full text link
    We perform numerical studies of the wave packet propagation through open quantum billiards whose classical counterparts exhibit regular and chaotic dynamics. We show that for t less or similar to tau (tau being the Heisenberg time), the features in the transmitted and reflected currents are directly related to specific classical trajectories connecting the billiard leads. In contrast, the long-time asymptotics of the wave packet dynamics is qualitatively different for classical and quantum billiards. In particularly, the decay of the quantum system obeys a power law that depends on the number of decay channels, and is not sensitive to the nature of classical dynamics (chaotic or regular).Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Asymmetric Hypsarrhythmia: Clinical Electroencephalographic and Radiological Findings

    Full text link
    Twenty-six children (16 boys and 10 girls) with hypsarrhythmia and infantile spasms (IS) were studied at the University of Michigan EEG Laboratory in a 4-year period. Six (2 boys, 4 girls), had asymmetric hypsarrhythmia with a preponderance of both slowing and epileptic form activity over one hemisphere. All 6 had the symptomatic form of IS, 4 with dysplastic conditions, 1 with porencephaly from a cerebral infarct, and 1 with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Five children had focal abnormalities on either physical examination or imaging studies. Four had the highest amplitude slowing and most epileptiform activity ipsilateral to the lesion, in 1, it was contralateral. Asymmetric hypsarrhythmia constituted 23% of cases with hypsarrhythmia examined at our EEG laboratory. The significant success in surgical therapy for some children with IS indicates the importance of identifying focal hemispheric abnormalities even if they are not apparent clinically. EEG may suggest focal changes not detected clinically or radiologically.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66439/1/j.1528-1157.1995.tb01663.x.pd

    A de Haas-van Alphen study of the filled skutterudite compounds PrOs4_4As12_{12} and LaOs4_4As12_{12}

    Full text link
    Comprehensive magnetic-field-orientation dependent studies of the susceptibility and de Haas-van Alphen effect have been carried out on single crystals of the filled skutterudites PrOs4_4As12_{12} and LaOs4_4As12_{12} using magnetic fields of up to 40~T. Several peaks are observed in the low-field susceptibility of PrOs4_4As12_{12}, corresponding to cascades of metamagnetic transitions separating the low-field antiferromagnetic and high-field paramagnetic metal (PMM) phases. The de Haas-van Alphen experiments show that the Fermi-surface topologies of PrOs4_4As12_{12} in its PMM phase and LaOs4_4As12_{12} are very similar. In addition, they are in reasonable agreement with the predictions of bandstructure calculations for LaOs4_4As12_{12} on the PrOs4_4As12_{12} lattice. Both observations suggest that the Pr 4ff electrons contribute little to the number of itinerant quasiparticles in the PMM phase. However, whilst the properties of LaOs4_4As12_{12} suggest a conventional nonmagnetic Fermi liquid, the effects of direct exchange and electron correlations are detected in the PMM phase of PrOs4_4As12_{12}. For example, the quasiparticle effective masses in PrOs4_4As12_{12} are found to decrease with increasing field, probably reflecting the gradual suppression of magnetic fluctuations associated with proximity to the low-temperature, low-field antiferromagnetic state

    La estructura sísmica de la corteza de la Zona de Ossa Morena y su interpretación geológica

    El experimento de sísmica de reflexión profunda IBERSEIS ha proporcionado una imagen de la corteza del Orógeno Varisco en el sudoeste de Iberia. Este artículo se centra en la descripción de la corteza de la Zona de Ossa Morena (OMZ), que está claramente dividida en una corteza superior, con reflectividad de buzamiento al NE, y una corteza inferior de pobre reflectividad. Las estructuras geológicas cartografiadas en superficie se correlacionan bien con la reflectividad de la corteza superior, y en la imagen sísmica se ven enraizar en la corteza media. Ésta está constituida por un cuerpo muy reflectivo, interpretado como una gran intrusión de rocas básicas. La imagen de las suturas que limitan la OMZ muestra el carácter fuertemente transpresivo de la colisión orogénica varisca registrada en el sudoeste de Iberia. La Moho actual es plana y, en consecuencia, no se observa la raíz del orógeno
