checkpoint_schedules: schedules for incremental checkpointing of adjoint simulations

    Get PDF
checkpoint_schedules provides schedules for step-based incremental checkpointing of the adjoints to computer models. The schedules contain instructions indicating the sequence of forward and adjoint steps to be executed, and the data storage and retrieval to be performed. These instructions are independent of the model implementation, which enables the model authors to switch between checkpointing algorithms without recoding. Conversely, checkpointing_schedules provides developers of checkpointing algorithms a direct mechanism to convey their work to model authors. checkpointing_schedules has been integrated into tlm_adjoint (James R. Maddison et al., 2019), a Python library designed for the automated derivationof higher-order tangent-linear and adjoint models and work is ongoing to integrate it with pyadjoint (Mitusch et al., 2019). This package can be incorporated into other gradient solvers based on adjoint methods, regardless of the specific approach taken to generate the adjoint model

“Supposing that truth is a woman, what then?” The Lie Detector, The Love Machine and the Logic of Fantasy

One of the consequences of the public outcry over the 1929 St Valentine’s Day massacre was the establishment of a Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory at Northwestern University. The photogenic “Lie Detector Man”, Leonarde Keeler, was the Laboratory’s poster boy and his instrument the jewel in the crown of forensic science. The press often depicted Keeler gazing at a female suspect attached to his “sweat box”; a galvanometer electrode in her hand, a sphygmomanometer cuff on her arm and a rubber pneumograph tube strapped across her breasts. Keeler’s fascination with the deceptive charms of the female body was one he shared with his fellow lie detector pioneers, all of whom met their wives – and in William Marston’s case his mistress too – through their engagement with the instrument. Marston employed his own “Love Meter”, as the press dubbed it, to prove that “brunettes react far more violently to amatory stimuli than blondes”. In this paper I draw on the psychoanalytic concepts of fantasy and pleasure to argue that the female body played a pivotal role in establishing the lie detector’s reputation as an infallible and benign mechanical technology of truth

    Cable\u27s Treatment of the Creoles

For over fifty years George Washington Cable has held, by virtue of the lavish and unqualified praise of critics, an honorable and significant position as an accurate master of local color in his fictional contributions to American letters. Born in 1844, in New Orleans, the most romantic spot in the South, and raised in the city surveyed and settled by the fathers of the Creoles, Cable drew material for a dozen novels and some twenty short stories at its source

Studying the Effect of Robustness Measures in Offline Parameter Tuning for Estimating the Performance of MOEA/D

International audienceOffline parameter tuning (OPT) of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) has the goal of finding an appropriate set of parameters for solving a large number of problems. According to the no free lunch theorem (NFL), no algorithm can have the best performance in all classes of optimization problems. However, it is possible to find an appropriate set of parameters of an algorithm for solving a particular class of problems. For that sake, we need to study how to estimate the aggregation quality function for an algorithmic configuration assessed on a set of optimization problems. In this paper, we study robustness measures for dealing with the parameter settings of stochastic algorithms. We focus on decomposition-based MOEAs and we propose to tune scalarizing functions for solving some classes of problems based on the Pareto front shapes using up to 7 objective functions. Based on our experimental results, we were able to derive interesting guidelines to evaluate the quality of algorithmic configurations using a combination of descriptive statistics

Effect of unloading brace treatment on pain and function in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis: the ROTOR randomized clinical trial

Evidence is still inconclusive for the benefits of bracing in patients with knee osteoarthritis. To assess the effect of REBEL RELIEVER unloading knee brace in conservative treatment of knee osteoarthritis, a randomized controlled trial was conducted in 67 patients with symptomatic medial knee osteoarthritis, who randomly received 6-week treatment with either REBEL RELIVER unloading knee brace + usual care (Brace group, N = 32) or usual care alone (Control group, N = 35). Primary outcome was the global last 24h-pain relief (100-mm visual analogic scale [VAS]) at 6 weeks. Secondary endpoints included pain on motion (100-mm VAS), function (Lequesne index), safety and observance. At 6 weeks, mean [SD] last 24h-pain decreased significantly more in Brace group versus Control group (-41.35 [3.37] vs -15.37 [3.23], difference - 25.98, 95% CI - 41.64 to - 10.33, P < 0.0001). Higher mean [SD] pain on motion decrease (-51.91 [3.49] vs - 19.91 [3.34], difference - 32.01, 95% CI - 48.21 to - 15.80, P < 0.0001) and better improvement of Lequesne index score (-5.8 [0.5] vs - 2.3 [0.5], difference - 3.5, 95% CI-5.0 to - 2.0, P < 0.0001) were observed in Brace group. Safety and observance to the brace were excellent. The additive clinical benefit of wearing REBEL RELIEVER unloading knee brace was demonstrated in knee osteoarthritis patients
