Integration of Host Plant Resistance and Insecticides in the Control of \u3ci\u3eNephotettix virescens\u3c/i\u3e (Homoptera: Cicadelli-dae), a Vector of Rice Tungro Virus
Combined effects of levels of vector resistance and insecticide application in control of rice tungro virus (RTV) were determined in three field tests. Cultivar âIR28,â with high levels of resistance to the vector, Nephotettix virescens (Distant), had low RTV infection in all treatments including the untreated check. In moderately resistant âIR36,â RTV decreased with an increase in level of insecticide but did not decrease to a level equaling the untreated âIR28.â The N. virescens-susceptible cultivar âIR22â had extremely high levels of RTV infection at all insecticide levels. Economic analysis indicated that gross profit and net gain were highest in the N. virescens-resistant âIR28,â intermediate in moderately resistant âIR36,â and lowest in susceptible âIR22.
Trivial centralizers for Axiom A diffeomorphisms
We show there is a residual set of non-Anosov Axiom A
diffeomorphisms with the no cycles property whose elements have trivial
centralizer. If is a surface and , then we will show
there exists an open and dense set of of Axiom A diffeomorphisms with the
no cycles property whose elements have trivial centralizer. Additionally, we
examine commuting diffeomorphisms preserving a compact invariant set
where is a hyperbolic chain recurrent class for one of the
diffeomorphisms.Comment: 18 page
Global bifurcations to subcritical magnetorotational dynamo action in Keplerian shear flow
Magnetorotational dynamo action in Keplerian shear flow is a three-dimensional, non-linear magnetohydrodynamic process whose study is relevant to the understanding of accretion processes and magnetic field generation in astrophysics. Transition to this form of dynamo action is subcritical and shares many characteristics of transition to turbulence in non-rotating hydrodynamic shear flows. This suggests that these different fluid systems become active through similar generic bifurcation mechanisms, which in both cases have eluded detailed understanding so far. In this paper, we build on recent work on the two problems to investigate numerically the bifurcation mechanisms at work in the incompressible Keplerian magnetorotational dynamo problem in the shearing box framework. Using numerical techniques imported from dynamical systems research, we show that the onset of chaotic dynamo action at magnetic Prandtl numbers larger than unity is primarily associated with global homoclinic and heteroclinic bifurcations of nonlinear magnetorotational dynamo cycles. These global bifurcations are found to be supplemented by local bifurcations of cycles marking the beginning of period-doubling cascades. The results suggest that nonlinear magnetorotational dynamo cycles provide the pathway to turbulent injection of both kinetic and magnetic energy in incompressible magnetohydrodynamic Keplerian shear flow in the absence of an externally imposed magnetic field. Studying the nonlinear physics and bifurcations of these cycles in different regimes and configurations may subsequently help to better understand the physical conditions of excitation of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence and instability-driven dynamos in a variety of astrophysical systems and laboratory experiments. The detailed characterization of global bifurcations provided for this three-dimensional subcritical fluid dynamics problem may also prove useful for the problem of transition to turbulence in hydrodynamic shear flows
Motion of vortices implies chaos in Bohmian mechanics
Bohmian mechanics is a causal interpretation of quantum mechanics in which
particles describe trajectories guided by the wave function. The dynamics in
the vicinity of nodes of the wave function, usually called vortices, is regular
if they are at rest. However, vortices generically move during time evolution
of the system. We show that this movement is the origin of chaotic behavior of
quantum trajectories. As an example, our general result is illustrated
numerically in the two-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator.Comment: 7 pages 5 figure
A note on the convergence of parametrised non-resonant invariant manifolds
Truncated Taylor series representations of invariant manifolds are abundant
in numerical computations. We present an aposteriori method to compute the
convergence radii and error estimates of analytic parametrisations of
non-resonant local invariant manifolds of a saddle of an analytic vector field,
from such a truncated series. This enables us to obtain local enclosures, as
well as existence results, for the invariant manifolds
Attractiveness of periodic orbits in parametrically forced systemswith time-increasing friction
We consider dissipative one-dimensional systems subject to a periodic force
and study numerically how a time-varying friction affects the dynamics. As a
model system, particularly suited for numerical analysis, we investigate the
driven cubic oscillator in the presence of friction. We find that, if the
damping coefficient increases in time up to a final constant value, then the
basins of attraction of the leading resonances are larger than they would have
been if the coefficient had been fixed at that value since the beginning. From
a quantitative point of view, the scenario depends both on the final value and
the growth rate of the damping coefficient. The relevance of the results for
the spin-orbit model are discussed in some detail.Comment: 30 pages, 6 figure
Decay of correlations for maps with uniformly contracting fibers and logarithm law for singular hyperbolic attractors
We consider two dimensional maps preserving a foliation which is uniformly
contracting and a one dimensional associated quotient map having exponential
convergence to equilibrium (iterates of Lebesgue measure converge exponentially
fast to physical measure). We prove that these maps have exponential decay of
correlations over a large class of observables. We use this result to deduce
exponential decay of correlations for the Poincare maps of a large class of
singular hyperbolic flows. From this we deduce logarithm laws for these flows.Comment: 39 pages; 03 figures; proof of Theorem 1 corrected; many typos

Symmetries and reversing symmetries of toral automorphisms
Toral automorphisms, represented by unimodular integer matrices, are
investigated with respect to their symmetries and reversing symmetries. We
characterize the symmetry groups of GL(n,Z) matrices with simple spectrum
through their connection with unit groups in orders of algebraic number fields.
For the question of reversibility, we derive necessary conditions in terms of
the characteristic polynomial and the polynomial invariants. We also briefly
discuss extensions to (reversing) symmetries within affine transformations, to
PGL(n,Z) matrices, and to the more general setting of integer matrices beyond
the unimodular ones.Comment: 34 page
On stochastic sea of the standard map
Consider a generic one-parameter unfolding of a homoclinic tangency of an
area preserving surface diffeomorphism. We show that for many parameters
(residual subset in an open set approaching the critical value) the
corresponding diffeomorphism has a transitive invariant set of full
Hausdorff dimension. The set is a topological limit of hyperbolic sets
and is accumulated by elliptic islands.
As an application we prove that stochastic sea of the standard map has full
Hausdorff dimension for sufficiently large topologically generic parameters.Comment: 36 pages, 5 figure
