Portugal suffered, over the last decades, a strong investment on communicational infrastructures, with a meaningful reduction of the relative distances between various areas of the country, especially the coastal and interior ones. Even though that communicational progress has been presented as an effort to mitigate the desertification and rural flight dynamics, those weren‟t reversed. This study relates the issue of communicational progress with these dynamics on a specific area of the Portuguese interior (concelho de Mação), exploring the relationship between the positive evolution of its communicational situation with the recessive demographic tendencies, based on theoretical contributions of the communication theory and, particularly, of the network society propositions. Using strategic planning procedures, a diagnosis of the concelho‟s situation has been built, along with a group of ten semi-directive interviews to people to people who left Mação, in order to understand the motivations the led to that itineration and how they perceive their life experience on the concelho, its development and communicational evolution. The results point towards a significant change on the meaning of each personal change experience, the way it is planned, and also of the instruments that are used to built an individual and collective identity that connects these people to the concelho. The communicational progress allows the strengthening of that identity at distance, and the decrease of the distance between the concelho and other places / opportunities is an important clue to understand the reasons of the contemporary recessive demographic tendencies

Trust and fake news: Exploratory analysis of the impact of news literacy on the relationship with news content in Portugal

In order to understand the role of contemporary journalism and the media system it is vital to consider consumers’ relationship with news content in terms of trust and perception of dubious content. This analysis is particularly relevant in a context where intense flows of information raise serious questions about individual ability to interpret, validate, and reproduce content. This analysis explores a news literacy scale used by Maskl et al. (2015) and Fletcher (in Newman et al., 2018) to investigate the links between news literacy profiles and their relationship with content, with particular focus on illegitimate/doubtful news pieces. Results suggest individuals with higher news literacy tend to trust news in general but not when content originates in social media. Higher literacy profiles are also associated with increased concern regarding online content legitimacy. These conclusions are particularly relevant in the currently volatile media sphere, highly dependent on a substantially informed public to ensure the legitimacy and importance of journalistic content and to distinguish it from other kinds of content flooding communication networks. These efforts depend not only on the journalistic sphere but also on democratic systems themselves as they rely on a well-informed public to guarantee a healthy and inclusive debate. In order to understand the role of contemporary journalism and the media system it is vital to consider consumers’ relationship with news content in terms of trust and perception of dubious content. According to data from the latest Reuters Digital News Report Portugal 2019 (n = 2010), we produced a generational portrayal of online news consumption in Portugal that allows us to investigate possible (dis)continuities of the theoretical framework that shapes the discussions on digital literacy and its sub-levels of analysis, namely with regard to the discussion of digital divisions between generational groups. The conclusion was that in the context of online news consumption in Portugal, young people constitute the generational group that is positioned farthest from the traditionalist profile, while the elderly are still far from being able to integrate the digitalist profile, although data analysis suggests a blurring of the historical differences attributed by the static discourse on digital literacies and digital divide between generational groups regarding the appropriation and use of digital technologies for different purposes

IBERIFIER Reports – Legal and Political Aspects of Disinformation in Portugal and Spain

    No full text
In Portugal and Spain, disinformation is a severe concern for social and cultural reasons. Furthermore, it is a significant concern for politicians and policymakers (Wardle & Derakhshan, 2017; Lanoszka, 2019; Saurwein & Spencer-Smith, 2020; Tenove, 2020; Correyero-Ruiz & Baladrón-Pazos, 2022). According to McKay & Tenove (2021), disinformation can undermine trust in democratic institutions and influence election outcomes, harming the reputation of individuals or institutions (European Commission, 2021; Department of National Security of the Spanish Government, 2022). In Portugal, the Government established a task force to combat disinformation, promoted media literacy, and launched campaigns to raise awareness of the dangers of disinformation. Similarly, in Spain, the Government established a Strategic Communication Office to coordinate efforts to combat disinformation and launched campaigns to promote media literacy
