A millimeter-wave antireflection coating for cryogenic silicon lenses
We have developed and tested an antireflection (AR) coating method for
silicon lenses at cryogenic temperatures and millimeter wavelengths. Our
particular application is a measurement of the cosmic microwave background. The
coating consists of machined pieces of Cirlex glued to the silicon. The
measured reflection from an AR coated flat piece is less than 1.5% at the
design wavelength. The coating has been applied to flats and lenses and has
survived multiple thermal cycles from 300 to 4 K. We present the manufacturing
method, the material properties, the tests performed, and estimates of the loss
that can be achieved in practical lenses

The challenges of using satellite data sets to assess historical land use change and associated greenhouse gas emissions: a case study of three Indonesian provinces
Advances in satellite remote sensing and the wealth of earth observation (EO) data now available have improved efforts toward determining and quantifying historical land use and land cover (LULC) change. Satellite imagery can overcome the absence of accurate records of historical land use; however, the variability observed in the case study regions demonstrates a number of current challenges.
Differences in spatial coverage, resolution and land cover classification can lead to challenges in analyzing historical data sets to estimate LULC change and associated GHG emissions. This paper demonstrates the calculation of LULC change from three existing, open-source data sets to show how this can lead to significant variation in estimates of GHG emissions related to differences in land classification methodologies, EO input data and period of investigation. This article focuses on selected regions of Indonesia, where quantifying land use change is important for GHG assessments of agricultural commodities and for evidencing progress against corporate and government deforestation commitments.
Given the significance of GHG emissions arising from LULC change and the increasing need for emissions monitoring, this research highlights a need for consensus building to develop consistency in historical and future LULC change estimates. This paper concludes with a set of recommendations for improvements to ensure consistent LULC mapping
Safety and preliminary efficacy of vorinostat with R-EPOCH in high-risk HIV-associated non-Hodgkin\u27s lymphoma (AMC-075)
We performed a phase I trial of vorinostat (VOR) given on days 1 to 5 with R-EPOCH (rituximab plus etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, and doxorubicin hydrochloride) in patients with aggressive HIV-associated non-Hodgkin lymphoma. VOR was tolerable at 300 mg and seemingly efficacious with chemotherapy with complete response rate of 83% and 1-year event-free survival of 83%. VOR did not significantly alter chemotherapy steady-state concentrations, CD4+ cell counts, or HIV viral loads.
Vorinostat (VOR), a histone deacetylase inhibitor, enhances the anti-tumor effects of rituximab (R) and cytotoxic chemotherapy, induces viral lytic expression and cell killing in Epstein-Barr virus-positive (EBV+) or human herpesvirus-8-positive (HHV-8+) tumors, and reactivates latent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) for possible eradication by combination antiretroviral therapy (cART).
We performed a phase I trial of VOR given with R-based infusional EPOCH (etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, and doxorubicin hydrochloride) (n = 12) and cART in aggressive HIV-associated B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in order to identify safe dosing and schedule. VOR (300 or 400 mg) was given orally on days 1 to 5 with each cycle of R-EPOCH for 10 high-risk patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (1 EBV+), 1 EBV+/HHV-8+ primary effusion lymphoma, and 1 unclassifiable NHL. VOR was escalated from 300 to 400 mg using a standard 3 + 3 design based on dose-limiting toxicity observed in cycle 1 of R-EPOCH.
The recommended phase II dose of VOR was 300 mg, with dose-limiting toxicity in 2 of 6 patients at 400 mg (grade 4 thrombocytopenia, grade 4 neutropenia), and 1 of 6 treated at 300 mg (grade 4 sepsis from tooth abscess). Neither VOR, nor cART regimen, significantly altered chemotherapy steady-state concentrations. VOR chemotherapy did not negatively impact CD4+ cell counts or HIV viral loads, which decreased or remained undetectable in most patients during treatment. The response rate in high-risk patients with NHL treated with VOR(R)-EPOCH was 100% (complete 83% and partial 17%) with a 1-year event-free survival of 83% (95% confidence interval, 51.6%-97.9%).
VOR combined with R-EPOCH was tolerable and seemingly efficacious in patients with aggressive HIV-NHL

Reactivity of TEMPO anion as a nucleophile and its applications for selective transformations of haloalkanes or acyl halides to aldehydes
Sodium 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxide (TEMPO−Na+), generated by reduction of TEMPO· with sodium naphthalenide in THF, reacted with alkyl halides or acyl halides to produce O-alkylated or acylated TEMPOs, which were in turn oxidized with mCPBA or reduced with DIBAL-H to afford the corresponding aldehydes, thus accomplishing a new protocol for the halides-carbonyls conversion.</p

Effects of Kerr Spacetime on Spectral Features from X-Ray Illuminated Accretion Discs
We performed detailed calculations of the relativistic effects acting on both
the reflection continuum and the iron line from accretion discs around rotating
black holes. Fully relativistic transfer of both illuminating and reprocessed
photons has been considered in Kerr spacetime. We calculated overall spectra,
line profiles and integral quantities, and present their dependences on the
black hole angular momentum.
We show that the observed EW of the lines is substantially enlarged when the
black hole rotates rapidly and/or the source of illumination is near above the
hole. Therefore, such calculations provide a way to distinguish among different
models of the central source.Comment: 9 pages, latex, 13 figures, 3 Tables; accepted for publication in
