    The Blazar Sequence: Validity and Predictions

    The "blazar sequence" posits that the most powerful BL Lacertae objects and flat-spectrum radio quasars should have relatively small synchrotron peak frequencies, nu_peak, and that the least powerful such objects should have the highest nu_peak values. This would have strong implications for our understanding of jet formation and physics and the possible detection of powerful, moderately high-redshift TeV blazars. I review the validity of the blazar sequence by using the results of very recent surveys and compare its detailed predictions against observational data. I find that the blazar sequence in its simplest form is ruled out. However, powerful flat-spectrum radio quasars appear not to reach the nu_peak typical of BL Lacs.     A theory of contracts for web services

    <p>Contracts are behavioural descriptions of Web services. We devise a theory of contracts that formalises the compatibility of a client to a service, and the safe replacement of a service with another service. The use of contracts statically ensures the successful completion of every possible interaction between compatible clients and services.</p> <p>The technical device that underlies the theory is the definition of filters, which are explicit coercions that prevent some possible behaviours of services and, in doing so, they make services compatible with different usage scenarios. We show that filters can be seen as proofs of a sound and complete subcontracting deduction system which simultaneously refines and extends Hennessy's classical axiomatisation of the must testing preorder. The relation is decidable and the decision algorithm is obtained via a cut-elimination process that proves the coherence of subcontracting as a logical system.</p> <p>Despite the richness of the technical development, the resulting approach is based on simple ideas and basic intuitions. Remarkably, its application is mostly independent of the language used to program the services or the clients. We also outline the possible practical impact of such a work and the perspectives of future research it opens.</p&gt

    The jet-disc connection in AGN

    We present our latest results on the connection between accretion rate and relativistic jet power in AGN, by using a large sample which includes mostly blazars, but contains also some radio--galaxies. The jet power can be traced by Îł\gamma--ray luminosity in the case of blazars, and radio luminosity for both classes. The accretion disc luminosity is instead traced by the broad emission lines. Among blazars, we find a correlation between broad line emission and the Îł\gamma--ray or radio luminosities, suggesting a direct tight connection between jet power and accretion rate. We confirm that the observational differences between blazar subclasses reflect differences in the accretion regime, but with blazars only we cannot properly access the low--accretion regime. By introducing radio--galaxies, we succeed in observing the fingerprint of the transition between radiatively efficient and inefficient accretion discs in the jetted AGN family. The transition occurs at the standard critical value Ld/LEdd∌10−2L_{\rm d}/L_{\rm Edd}\sim10^{-2} and it appears smooth. Below this value, the ionizing luminosity emitted by the accretion structure drops significantly.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA

    BeppoSAX Observations of 1-Jy BL Lacertae Objects - II

    We present new BeppoSAX LECS and MECS observations, covering the energy range 0.1 - 10 keV (observer's frame), of four BL Lacertae objects selected from the 1 Jy sample. All sources display a flat (alpha_x ~ 0.7) X-ray spectrum, which we interpret as inverse Compton emission. One object shows evidence for a low-energy steepening (Delta alpha_x ~ 0.9) which is likely due to the synchrotron component merging into the inverse Compton one around ~ 2 keV. A variable synchrotron tail would explain why the ROSAT spectra of our sources are typically steeper than the BeppoSAX ones (Delta alpha_x} ~ 0.7). The broad-band spectral energy distributions fully confirm this picture and model fits using a synchrotron inverse Compton model allow us to derive the physical parameters (intrinsic power, magnetic field, etc.) of our sources. By combining the results of this paper with those previously obtained on other sources we present a detailed study of the BeppoSAX properties of a well-defined sub-sample of 14 X-ray bright (f_x (0.1 - 10 keV) > 3 x 10^{-12} erg/cm^2/s) 1-Jy BL Lacs. We find a very tight proportionality between nearly simultaneous radio and X-ray powers for the 1-Jy sources in which the X-ray band is dominated by inverse Compton emission, which points to a strong link between X-ray and radio emission components in these objects.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures.     O Pantanal devido a sua extensão e dificuldade de acesso representa um desafio para o desenvolvimento de atividades de produção e conservação da natureza. Nesse sentido as tecnologias de Sensoriamento Remoto podem contribuir muito para o conhecimento e manejo desse ecossistema. O presente trabalho apresenta o mosaico de imagens Landsat 7 ETM do ano 2000 do Pantanal, onde ao contrårio dos demais produtos dessa natureza, apresenta uma maior precisão de posicionamento em função de um extenso trabalho de campo realizado para o georreferenciamento das imagens. Esse trabalho é o resultado da parceria entre a Embrapa Pantanal e a WWF Brasil e estå disponível também na homepage da Embrapa Pantanal.     The Brera Multi-scale Wavelet (BMW) ROSAT HRI source catalog. II: application to the HRI and first results

    The wavelet detection algorithm (WDA) described in the accompanying paper by Lazzati et al. is made suited for a fast and efficient analysis of images taken with the High Resolution Imager (HRI) instrument on board the ROSAT satellite. An extensive testing is carried out on the detection pipeline: HRI fields with different exposure times are simulated and analysed in the same fashion as the real data. Positions are recovered with few arcsecond errors, whereas fluxes are within a factor of two from their input values in more than 90% of the cases in the deepest images. At variance with the ``sliding-box'' detection algorithms, the WDA provides also a reliable description of the source extension, allowing for a complete search of e.g. supernova remnant or cluster of galaxies in the HRI fields. A completeness analysis on simulated fields shows that for the deepest exposures considered (~120 ks) a limiting flux of \~3x10^{-15} erg/cm2/s can be reached over the entire field of view. We test the algorithm on real HRI fields selected for their crowding and/or presence of extended or bright sources (e.g. cluster of galaxies and of stars, supernova remnants). We show that our algorithm compares favorably with other X-ray detection algorithms such as XIMAGE and EXSAS. A complete catalog will result from our analysis: it will consist of the Brera Multi-scale Wavelet Bright Source Catalog (BMW-BSC) with sources detected with a significance >4.5 sigma and of the Faint Source Catalog (BMW-FSC) with sources at >3.5 sigma. A conservative estimate based on the extragalactic log(N)-log(S) indicates that at least 16000 sources will be revealed in the complete analysis of the whole HRI dataset.Comment: 6 pages, 11 PostScript figures, 1 gif figure, ApJ in pres
