    Background: Antineoplastic drugs (AND) are known to cause collateral damage to normal cells by oxidative stress. This study was conducted to check for oxidative stress in occupational exposure to these drugs using advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP).Methods: Cross-sectional comparison of serum AOPP levels of 33 nurses occupationally exposed and serum AOPP levels of 30 nurses not exposed using modified AOPP method.Results: Serum AOPP levels were significantly increased (p<0.001) in the exposed group (16.66±3.31) compared to the unexposed group (12.87±2.62).Conclusion: This study highlights oxidative stress in the form of protein oxidation occurring in nurses exposed to AND

    FOXO1 Plays an Important Role in Enhanced Microvascular Cell Apoptosis and Microvascular Cell Loss in Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetic Rats

    OBJECTIVE: To investigate early events leading to microvascular cell loss in diabetic retinopathy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: FOXO1 was tested in vivo by DNA binding activity and by nuclear translocation in microvascular cells in retinal trypsin digests. In vivo studies were undertaken in STZ-induced diabetic rats and Zucker diabetic fatty rats using the tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-specific blocker, pegsunercept, or by inhibiting FOXO1 with RNAi. Microvascular cell apoptosis, formation of pericyte ghosts, and acellular capillaries were measured. Upstream and downstream effects of high-glucose–induced FOXO1 were tested on rat microvascular endothelial cells (RMECs) by small-interfering RNA (siRNA) in vitro. RESULTS: DNA binding or nuclear translocation of FOXO1, which was reduced by TNF inhibition, was elevated in type 1 and type 2 diabetic retinas. Diabetes stimulated microvascular cell apoptosis; pericyte ghost and acellular capillary development was inhibited by FOXO1 siRNA. High glucose in vitro decreased FOXO1 phosphorylation and DNA binding activity and decreased Akt phosphorylation in RMECs. High-glucose–stimulated FOXO1 DNA binding activity was mediated through TNF-α and formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), while inhibitors of TNF and ROS and FOXO1 siRNA reduced high-glucose–enhanced RMEC apoptosis. The caspase-3/7 activity and capacity of high glucose to increase mRNA levels of several genes that regulate RMEC activation and apoptosis were knocked down by FOXO1 siRNA.     Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract of Bauhinia purpurea bark

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant efficacy of ethanolic extract of Bauhinia purpurea bark (EBP) in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. Carrageenan induced paw edema and air pouch inflammation, arachidonic acid induced ear edema and complete freund’s adjuvant (CFA) induced hematological alterations were studied in control and experimental rats. Administration of EBP (200mg, 400mg, 600 mg/kg body weight) showed a significant and dose dependent inhibition of paw edema and ear edema and also reversed the hematological alterations near to normalcy. DPPH assay and measurement of MDA levels showed potent antioxidant activity of EBP. With increase in concentration of EBP, improvement in walking scores of motility test confirmed the anti-inflammatory activity of EBP. Acute toxicity studies demonstrated non toxic nature of EBP even at higher doses. Together, our results demonstrate that EBP has potent anti-inflammatory as well as potent antioxidant properties validating the folk medicinal use of this species

    Preliminary draft. Please do not quote. This paper examines the impact of job loss due to business closings on body mass index (BMI) and alcohol consumption. We suggest that the ambiguous findings in the extant literature may be due in part to unobserved heterogeneity in response and in part due to an overly broad measure of job loss that is partially endogenous (e.g. layoffs). We improve upon this literature by using: exogenously determined business closings, a sophisticated estimation approach (finite mixture models) to deal with complex heterogeneity, and national, longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study. For both alcohol consumption and BMI, we find evidence that individuals who are more likely to respond to job loss by increasing unhealthy behaviors are already in the problematic range for these behaviors before losing their jobs. These results suggest the health effects of job loss could be concentrated among “at risk ” individuals and could lead to negative outcomes for the individuals, their families, and society at large

    Sin Taxes: Do Heterogeneous Responses Undercut Their Value?

    This paper estimates the price elasticity of demand for alcohol using Health and Retirement Survey data. To account for unobserved heterogeneity in price responsiveness, we use finite mixture models. We recover two latent groups, one is significantly responsive to price but the other is unresponsive. Differences between these two groups can be explained in part by the behavioral factors of risk aversion, financial planning horizon, forward looking and locus of control. These results have policy implications. Only a subgroup responds significantly to price. Importantly, the unresponsive group drinks more heavily, suggesting that a higher price could fail to curb drinking by those most likely to cause negative externalities. In contrast, those least likely to impose costs on others are more responsive, thus suffering greater deadweight loss yet with less prevention of negative externalities.

In such file systems, nodes simultaneously serve computing and storage functions; a file is partitioned into a number of chunks allocated in distinct nodes so that Map Reduce tasks can be performed in parallel over the nodes. Data storage and communication which are to be done in huge amount, in such cases clouds are most provably used. "The cloud", also focuses on increasing the effectiveness of the public resources.
