    Dispositivo háptico vibrotáctil inalámbrico para asistencia de actividades motoras

    This article describes the research that leads to the development of a wireless haptic device capable of generating vibrotractile mechanical stimuli at different points in the human skin and at desired frequencies by means of 16 actuators contained in portable bracelet isolated, designed for any extremity of the human. This prototype allows control over each actuator used as a test point, independently driven by commands transmitted wirelessly to a self-contained rechargeable control system placed on the bracelet. The completion and use of this system allowed to perform usability tests with respect to tactile perception from three experiments in healthy people, who verified the efficiency of the vibrotactile flux in the discrimination of nearby stimuli and the correct functioning of the device. With the development of this device want to perform it a wide variety of validation tests with a large sample of patients with and without neuropathies, in order to create a database to be used as set values against these patients and it is expected that the system is also used in patients with movement deficit, using tactile perception as a psychomotor stimulant in the execution of motor activities.El presente artículo describe la investigación que condujo al desarrollo de un dispositivo háptico inalámbrico, capaz de generar estímulos mecánicos vibrotáctiles en diferentes puntos de la piel—y a frecuencias deseadas—por medio de dieciséis actuadores contenidos en un brazalete portátil diseñado para cualquier extremidad del cuerpo humano. Este prototipo permite tener control sobre cada actuador usado como punto de estimulación, accionado de forma independiente por medio de comandos transmitidos inalámbricamente hacia un sistema de control autónomo recargable dispuesto en el brazalete. Se realizaron pruebas de usabilidad, con respecto a la percepción táctil, que comprobaron el correcto funcionamiento del dispositivo. En perspectiva, el desarrollo, luego de una variedad de pruebas de validación con una amplia muestra de pacientes con y sin neuropatías, tiene como fin la creación de una base de datos para ser usada como valores consigna frente a estos pacientes—esperando que el sistema se use también en pacientes con déficit de movimiento— y empleando la percepción táctil como estimulante psicomotor en la ejecución de actividades motoras

    The development of simulation systems for surgical procedures has become a topic of research in several areas such as computer engineering, robotics and medicine in recent years, mainly because these systems suppose a novel alternative for the acquisition of medical skills, planning, guidance and post-operative control; while represent significant challenges in terms of their design, implementation and validation. This paper presents the experiences and methodologies applied to the development of computerized simulators for virtual training in the Research and Technological Development Unit (UIDT) in the General Hospital of Mexico (HGM) "Dr. Eduardo Liceaga" from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).     Galaxy classification: deep learning on the OTELO and COSMOS databases

    Context. The accurate classification of hundreds of thousands of galaxies observed in modern deep surveys is imperative if we want to understand the universe and its evolution. Aims. Here, we report the use of machine learning techniques to classify early- and late-type galaxies in the OTELO and COSMOS databases using optical and infrared photometry and available shape parameters: either the Sersic index or the concentration index. Methods. We used three classification methods for the OTELO database: 1) u-r color separation , 2) linear discriminant analysis using u-r and a shape parameter classification, and 3) a deep neural network using the r magnitude, several colors, and a shape parameter. We analyzed the performance of each method by sample bootstrapping and tested the performance of our neural network architecture using COSMOS data. Results. The accuracy achieved by the deep neural network is greater than that of the other classification methods, and it can also operate with missing data. Our neural network architecture is able to classify both OTELO and COSMOS datasets regardless of small differences in the photometric bands used in each catalog. Conclusions.     The OTELO survey. A case study of [O III]4959,5007 emitters at <z> = 0.83

    The OTELO survey is a very deep, blind exploration of a selected region of the Extended Groth Strip and is designed for finding emission-line sources (ELSs). The survey design, observations, data reduction, astrometry, and photometry, as well as the correlation with ancillary data used to obtain a final catalogue, including photo-z estimates and a preliminary selection of ELS, were described in a previous contribution. Here, we aim to determine the main properties and luminosity function (LF) of the [O III] ELS sample of OTELO as a scientific demonstration of its capabilities, advantages, and complementarity with respect to other surveys. The selection and analysis procedures of ELS candidates obtained using tunable filter (TF) pseudo-spectra are described. We performed simulations in the parameter space of the survey to obtain emission-line detection probabilities. Relevant characteristics of [O III] emitters and the LF([O III]), including the main selection biases and uncertainties, are presented. A total of 184 sources were confirmed as [O III] emitters at a mean redshift z=0.83. The minimum detectable line flux and equivalent width (EW) in this ELS sample are \sim5 ×\times 1019^{-19} erg s1^{-1} cm2^{2} and \sim6 \AA, respectively. We are able to constrain the faint-end slope (α=1.03±0.08\alpha = -1.03\pm0.08) of the observed LF([O III]) at z=0.83. This LF reaches values that are approximately ten times lower than those from other surveys. The vast majority (84\%) of the morphologically classified [O III] ELSs are disc-like sources, and 87\% of this sample is comprised of galaxies with stellar masses of M_\star << 1010^{10} M_{\odot}.Comment: v1: 16 pages, 6 figures.     The OTELO survey I. Description, data reduction, and multi-wavelength catalogue

    ABSTRACT: Context. The evolution of galaxies through cosmic time is studied observationally by means of extragalactic surveys. The usefulness of these surveys is greatly improved by increasing the cosmological volume, in either depth or area, and by observing the same targets in different wavelength ranges. A multi-wavelength approach using different observational techniques can compensate for observational biases. Aims. The OTELO survey aims to provide the deepest narrow-band survey to date in terms of minimum detectable flux and emission line equivalent width in order to detect the faintest extragalactic emission line systems. In this way, OTELO data will c omplements other broad-band, narrow-band, and spectroscopic surveys. Methods. The red tunable filter of the OSIRIS instrument on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) is used to scan a spectral window centred at 9175 Å, which is free from strong sky emission lines, with a sampling interval of 6 Å and a bandwidth of 12 Å in the most deeply explored EGS region. Careful data reduction using improved techniques for sky ring subtraction, accurate astrometry, photometric calibration, and source extraction enables us to compile the OTELO catalogue. This catalogue is complemented with ancillary data ranging from deep X-ray to far-infrared, including high resolution HST images, which allow us to segregate the different types of targets, derive precise photometric redshifts, and obtain the morphological classification of the extragalactic objects detected. Results. The OTELO multi-wavelength catalogue contains 11 237 entries and is 50% complete at AB magnitude 26.38. Of these sources, 6600 have photometric redshifts with an uncertainty δ z phot better than 0.2 (1+z phot). A total of 4336 of these sources correspond to preliminary emission line candidates, which are complemented by 81 candidate stars and 483 sources that qualify as absorption line systems.     The OTELO survey: faint end of the luminosity function of [O_(II)]3727 emitters at ‹z›=1.43

    Aims. In this paper, we aim to study the main properties and luminosity function (LF) of the [O II]3727 emitters detected in the OTELO survey in order to characterise the star formation processes in low-mass galaxies at z ∼ 1.43 and to constrain the faint-end of the LF. Methods. Here, we describe the selection method and analysis of the emitters obtained from narrow-band scanning techniques. In addition, we present several relevant properties of the emitters and discuss the selection biases and uncertainties in the determination of the LF and the star formation rate density (SFRD). Results. We confirmed a total of 60 sources from a preliminary list of 332 candidates as [O II]3727 emitters. Approximately 93% of the emitters have masses in the range of 10^(8) < M*/M⊙ < 10^(9). All of our emitters are classified as late-type galaxies, with a lower value of (u − v) when compared with the rest of the emitters of the OTELO survey. We find that the cosmic variance strongly affects the normalisation (ϕ*) of the LF and explains the discrepancy of our results when compared with those obtained from surveys of much larger volumes. However, we are able to determine the faint-end slope of the LF, namely, α = −1.42 ± 0.06, by sampling the LF down to ∼1 dex lower than in previous works. We present our calculation of the SFRD of our sample and compare it to the value obtained in previous studies from the literature

En nuestra institución, precisamente, existe un nutrido número de niños y de jóvenes talentosos en diferentes campos, a saber: La música, el teatro, la danza, el canto, los deportes, la escritura, la pintura, el diseño y, por supuesto, a nivel académico; personas sensibles al arte y a sus diferentes manifestaciones porque poseen un talento intrínseco que les permite destacarse en el medio en donde interactúan. En esta edición de “La Caldera” se pretende continuar con la labor de seguir destacando, mostrando, promoviendo algunos de los talentosos estudiantes que hacen parte de nuestra Institución. La edición también tiene como meta hacer la invitación a aquellos talentos aprendidos o innatos, pero ocultos, para que compartan con nuestra familia caldista sus dones. Es así como la institución privilegia diferentes espacios institucionales que, años tras año, han ido consolidándose como la muestra de talentos caldistas, en donde conocemos, valoramos, apreciamos y disfrutamos, precisamente, de las destrezas, de las habilidades que tienen nuestros educandos.
