    Get PDF
This study has determined contamination levels in soils and plants from the Sa˜o Domingos mining area, Portugal, by k0-INAA. Total concentrations of As, Sb, Cr, Hg, Cu, Zn and Fe in soils were very high, exceeding the maximum limits in Portuguese legislation. Concentrations of toxic elements like As, Sb and Zn were highest in roots of Erica andevalensis, Juncus acutus, Agrostis castellana and Nicotiana glauca. Additionally, As, Br, Cr, Fe, Sb and Zn in all organs of most plants were above toxicity levels. Those species that accumulated relatively high concentrations of toxic elements in roots (and tops) may be cultivated for phytostabilisation of similar areas

The Effective Particle-Hole Interaction and the Optical Response of Simple Metal Clusters

Following Sham and Rice [L. J. Sham, T. M. Rice, Phys. Rev. 144 (1966) 708] the correlated motion of particle-hole pairs is studied, starting from the general two-particle Greens function. In this way we derive a matrix equation for eigenvalues and wave functions, respectively, of the general type of collective excitation of a N-particle system. The interplay between excitons and plasmons is fully described by this new set of equations. As a by-product we obtain - at least a-posteriori - a justification for the use of the TDLDA for simple-metal clusters.Comment: RevTeX, 15 pages, 5 figures in uufiles format, 1 figure avaible from [email protected]

Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus.Previous studies in rats have demonstrated that chronic restraint stress triggers anhedonia, depressive-like behaviors, anxiety and a reduction in dendritic spine density in hippocampal neurons. In this study, we compared the effect of repeated stress on the expression of α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunits in dorsal and ventral hippocampus (VH). Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into control and stressed groups, and were daily restrained in their motion (2.5 h/day) during 14 days. We found that chronic stress promotes an increase in c-Fos mRNA levels in both hippocampal areas, although it was observed a reduction in the immunoreactivity at pyramidal cell layer. Furthermore, Arc mRNAs levels were increased in both dorsal and VH, accompanied by an increase in Arc immunoreactivity in dendritic hippocampal layers. Furthermore, stress triggered a reduction in PSD-95 and NR1 protein levels in whole extract of dorsal and VH. Moreover, a reduction in NR2A/NR2B ratio was observed only in dorsal pole. In synaptosomal fractions, we detected a rise in NR1 in dorsal hippocampus (DH). By indirect immunofluorescence we found that NR1 subunits rise, especially in neuropil areas of dorsal, but not VH. In relation to AMPA receptor (AMPAR) subunits, chronic stress did not trigger any change, either in dorsal or ventral hippocampal areas. These data suggest that DH is more sensitive than VH to chronic stress exposure, mainly altering the expression of NMDA receptor (NMDAR) subunits, and probably favors changes in the configuration of this receptor that may influence the function of this area.https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnmol.2017.00244/ful

Proposal for applying combined selection to diallel analysis.

The phylosophy of intrapopulation combined selection is the search for and identification of individuals with superior genotypic behavior, based on their performance compared to the family mean and, at the same time, of their family mean in relation to the population mean, through the weighting of the phenotypic values represented, respectively, by the within and among families heritability coeficient. The objective of this study was to adapt and apply this philosophy ti diallel analysis. The crosses were considered as having fixed effects and selected on the basis of their specific combining ability (SCA), and on the mean performance of the two involved parents, in relation to the general combining ability (GCA). This work was based on Griffing's (Heredity 10; 35-50, 1956) method 2, model 1 which involves p(p+1)/2 treatments. The proposed index result from the weighting of the effects of GCA (gi's) and SCA (sij's) by the respective determination coefficient of additive and dominant genetic determinations, resulting from the partitioning of the total genotypic determination coefficient. Formation of black holes in the pair-instability mass gap: Hydrodynamical simulation of a massive star collision

The detection of GW190521 by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration proved the existence of black holes in the theoretically predicted pair-instability gap of their mass spectrum. Some recent studies suggest that such massive black holes could be produced by the collision of an evolved star with a carbon-oxygen core and a main sequence star. Such a post-coalescence star could end its life avoiding the pair-instability regime and with a direct collapse of its very massive envelope. It is still not clear, however, how the collision shapes the structure of the newly produced star and how much mass is actually lost in the impact. We investigated this issue by means of hydrodynamical simulations with the smoothed particle hydrodynamics code StarSmasher, finding that the collision can remove up to 12% of the initial mass of the colliding stars. This is a non-negligible percentage of the initial mass and could affect the further evolution of the stellar remnant, particularly in terms of the final mass of a possibly forming black hole, if the core avoids the pair-instability regime. We also found that the main sequence star can plunge down to the outer boundary of the carbon-oxygen core of the primary, changing the inner chemical composition of the remnant. The collision expels the outer layers of the primary, leaving a remnant with an helium-enriched envelope (reaching He fractions of about 0.4 at the surface). These more complex abundance profiles can be directly used in stellar evolution simulations of the collision product.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Comments welcome

Microengineered structures for rapid automatic loading of optical fibre segments

    Get PDF
We present a technique to rapidly and automatically produce sections of optical fibre and load them into arrays such that they can be nano-imprinted in parallel. The technique makes use of automated fibre feeding, cutting and alignment with microfabricated groove arrays. The system is analyzed and optimized and it is found that the geometry of the arrays themselves is a critical factor. Three types of array are investigated-simple grooves, grooves with lateral funnels at the input, and bulk silicon machined V-groove arrays with funnels in both lateral and vertical dimensions. It is found that the incorporation of funnels significantly increases the accuracy of loading, overcoming the need for precise alignment, such that a throughput nearing 1000 fibre segments an hour can be achieved. This system forms part of a sequence of novel processes for the production of nano-photonic sensors
