    Polystyrene Magadiite Nanocomposites

    An organically modified magadiite has been prepared and used to make a mixed intercalated-exfoliated polystyrene nanocomposite by bulk polymerization. This system gives excellent improvement in mechanical properties, but the thermogravimetric analysis curves do not show any change in the onset of the degradation and the degradation pathway is not changed from that for virgin polystyrene, unlike the situation for an aluminosilicate clay, monlmorillonite. By cone calorimetry, the peak heat release rate is not changed, again unlike the results with the aluminosilicate. This suggests that not all clays exhibit the same behavior in nanocomposite formation

    Streamflow and precipitation data collected at and near Yucca Mountain, Nevada, during water years 1983--85, are presented in this report. The data were collected and compiled as part of the studies the US Geological Survey is making, in cooperation with the US Department of Energy, to characterize surface-water hydrology in the Yucca Mountain area. Streamflow data include daily mean discharges and peak discharges at 4 complete-record gaging stations and peak discharges at 10 crest-stage, partial-record stations and 12 miscellaneous sites. Precipitation data include cumulative totals at 12 stations maintained by the US Geological Survey and daily totals at 17 stations maintained by the Weather Service Nuclear Support Office, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

    Magnetic Resonance Images of the Brain of a Dwarf Sperm Whale (Kogia simus)

    Cetacean (dolphin, whale and porpoise) brains are among the least studied mammalian brains because of the difficulty of collecting and histologically preparing such relatively rare and large specimens. Among cetaceans, there exist relatively few studies of the brain of the dwarf sperm whale (Kogia simus). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers a means of observing the internal structure of the brain when traditional histological procedures are not practical. Therefore, MRI has become a critical tool in the study of the brain of cetaceans and other large species. This paper represents the first MRI-based anatomically labelled three-dimensional description of the dwarf sperm whale brain. Coronal plane sections of the brain of a sub-adult dwarf sperm whale were originally acquired and used to produce virtual digital scans in the other two orthogonal spatial planes. A sequential set of images in all three planes has been anatomically labelled and displays the proportions and positions of major neuroanatomical features

    Evidence for Infanticide in Bottlenose Dolphins of the Western North Atlantic

    Nine bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) calves that stranded in Virginia in 1996 and 1997 died of severe blunt-force trauma. Injuries were concentrated on the head and chest and multiple rib fractures, lung lacerations, and soft tissue contusions were prominent. Skeletal and/or soft tissue trauma occurred bilaterally in all of the calves. One had a bite wound across the left mandible that exhibited deep punctures consistent with the tooth placement in an adult bottlenose dolphin. The lesions were not compatible with predation, boat strike, fisheries interactions, rough-surf injury, or blast injury. However, they were similar to traumatic injuries described in stranded bottlenose dolphin calves and harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in Great Britain attributed to violent dolphin interactions. The evidence suggests that violent dolphin behavior was the cause of the trauma in the nine calves reported here and that infanticide occurs in bottlenose dolphins of the western North Atlantic

    A high-performance integrated single-photon detector for telecom wavelengths

    We have integrated a commercial avalanche photodiode (APD) and the circuitry needed to operate it as a single-photon detector (SPD) onto a single PC-board. At temperatures accessible with Peltier coolers (~200-240K), the PCB-SPD achieves high detection efficiency (DE) at 1308 and 1545 nm with low dark count probability (e.g. ~10-6/bias pulse at DE=20%, 220 K), making it useful for quantum key distribution (QKD). The board generates fast bias pulses, cancels noise transients, amplifies the signals, and sends them to an on-board discriminator. A digital blanking circuit suppresses afterpulsing.Comment: (10 pages, 6 figures

    Associations between anxiety, body mass index, and sex hormones in women

    Background: Several studies have shown a positive association between anxiety and obesity, particularly in women. We aimed to study whether sex hormone alterations related to obesity might play a role in this association. Patients and methods: Data for this study were obtained from a population-based cohort study (the LIFE-Adult-Study). A total of 3,124 adult women (970 premenopausal and 2,154 postmenopausal) were included into the analyses. The anxiety symptomatology was assessed using the GAD-7 questionnaire (cut-off ≥ 10 points). Sex hormones were measured from fasting serum samples. Results: We did not find significant differences in anxiety prevalence in premenopausal obese women compared with normal-weight controls (4.8% vs. 5.5%). Both obesity and anxiety symptomatology were separately associated with the same sex hormone alteration in premenopausal women: higher total testosterone level (0.97 ± 0.50 in obese vs. 0.86 ± 0.49 nmol/L in normal-weight women, p = 0.026 and 1.04 ± 0.59 in women with vs. 0.88 ± 0.49 nmol/L in women without anxiety symptomatology, p = 0.023). However, women with anxiety symptomatology had non-significantly higher estradiol levels than women without anxiety symptomatology (548.0 ± 507.6 vs. 426.2 ± 474.0 pmol/L), whereas obesity was associated with lower estradiol levels compared with those in normal-weight group (332.7 ± 386.5 vs. 470.8 ± 616.0 pmol/L). Women with anxiety symptomatology had also significantly higher testosterone and estradiol composition (p = 0.006). No associations of sex hormone levels and BMI with anxiety symptomatology in postmenopausal women were found. Conclusions: Although both obesity and anxiety symptomatology were separately associated with higher testosterone level, there was an opposite impact of anxiety and obesity on estradiol levels in premenopausal women. We did not find an evidence that the sex hormone alterations related to obesity are playing a significant role in anxiety symptomatology in premenopausal women. This could be the explanation why we did not find an association between obesity and anxiety. In postmenopausal women, other mechanisms seem to work than in the premenopausal group

    Anatomy and Three-Dimensional Reconstructions of the Brain of a Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) From Magnetic Resonance Images

    Cetacean (dolphin, whale, and porpoise) brains are among the least studied mammalian brains because of the formidability of collecting and histologically preparing such relatively rare and large specimens. Magnetic resonance imaging offers a means of observing the internal structure of the brain when traditional histological procedures are not practical. Furthermore, internal structures can be analyzed in their precise anatomic positions, which is difficult to accomplish after the spatial distortions often accompanying histological processing. In this study, images of the brain of an adult bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus, were scanned in the coronal plane at 148 antero-posterior levels. From these scans a computer-generated three-dimensional model was constructed using the programs Voxel-View and VoxelMath (Vital Images, Inc.). This model, wherein details of internal and external morphology are represented in three-dimensional space, was then resectioned in orthogonal planes to produce corresponding series of virtual sections in the horizontal and sagittal planes. Sections in all three planes display the sizes and positions of major neuroanatomical features such as the arrangement of cortical lobes and subcortical structures such as the inferior and superior colliculi, and demonstrate the utility of MRI for neuroanatomical investigations of dolphin brains

    On the strong impact of doping in the triangular antiferromagnet CuCrO2

    Electronic band structure calculations using the augmented spherical wave method have been performed for CuCrO2. For this antiferromagnetic (T_N = 24 K) semiconductor crystallizing in the delafossite structure, it is found that the valence band maximum is mainly due to the t_2g orbitals of Cr^3+ and that spin polarization is predicted with 3 mu_B per Cr^3+. The structural characterizations of CuCr1-xMgxO2 reveal a very limited range of Mg^2+ substitution for Cr^3+ in this series. As soon as x = 0.02, a maximum of 1% Cr ions substituted by Mg site is measured in the sample. This result is also consistent with the detection of Mg spinel impurities from X-ray diffraction for x = 0.01. This explains the saturation of the Mg^2+ effect upon the electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power observed for x > 0.01. Such a very weak solubility limit could also be responsible for the discrepancies found in the literature. Furthermore, the measurements made under magnetic field (magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient) support that the Cr^4+ "holes", created by the Mg^2+ substitution, in the matrix of high spin Cr^3+ (S = 3/2) are responsible for the transport properties of these compounds.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, more information at http://www.physik.uni-augsburg.de/~eyert
