    Design and Manufacturing of an APTF to Test Fluid Behaviour in Microgravity Environment

    The present paper deals with the design and manufacturing of an APTF (Advanced Plateau Tank Facility) in order to carrying out earth experiments, previous to space experiments, of fluid behaviour in microgravity environment. This work has been done in collaboration between Manufacturing and Microgravity Laboratories in the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and analyses the requirements and restrictions that must be considered for an APTF design and manufacture. Mechanism employed in each part of the prototype are described in detail, emphasising those that suppose new solutions rather previous designs

    A Plateau Tank Facility (PTF) for Liquid Bridge Experimentation by Using Buoyancy Technique for Microgravity Simulation

    Plateau tank is just a reservoir filled with a liquid inside of which there is another immiscible liquid of the same density. The behaviour of the inner liquid can be studied in some respects as in weightlessness. Several Plateau tank facilities have been built-up in the last decade at Lamf/ETSIA. In this paper a new apparatus for liquid bridge experimentation in simulated microgravity conditions is presented. Such equipment allows to impose to the experimental configuration a wide range of controlled mechanical disturbances and incorporates appropriate diagnosis means. The apparatus' may be operated either manually or from a desktop computer to which a remote controller can be linked for telescience operation

    The organizational legitimacy as an entry barrier in larg international contracts

    In the public tender processes of large international contracts, the organizational legitimacy is considered a prerequisite to limit the risk of engagement with companies that do not have it. The instrument usually used by the contracting parties is the Pre-qualification Questionnaire, which acts as a real entry barrier for contractors to participate in subsequent tenders. In this research we analyze the legitimacy requirement in tender processes. We focus on large contracts, mainly for the public sector but not limited to, based on documents accessible through public digital media. The research defines and provides content to the variables that shape the different legitimacy sorts required to the organizations to participate in large construction and trade tenders. The results suggest that the legitimacy requirements to the bidders are multidimensional, which entails that to participate in public tenders several legitimacy dimensions are evaluated. The weight of the different kinds of legitimacy in relation to the legitimacy global requirements is also analyzed

    GeoBotánica: Aplicación Web para la visualización, análisis y estudio de taxones vegetales. Caso de estudio Cuenca Media del Tajo.

    La geobotánica (fitogeografía), rama de la biogeografía, estudia cómo la tectónica de placas y las orogénesis determinan una distribución de tierras, mares y accidentes geográficos, el aislamiento o la conexión de poblaciones, la distribución espacial de las especies y los fenómenos de especialización. La corología, por su parte, se ocupa de la distribución geográfica de cada especie, siendo el clima y el suelo los principales factores que influyen en la misma. Como resumen podemos decir que para la geobotánica es de interés poder obtener y analizar: mapas corológicos, los factores limitantes climáticos y químicos, y la relación con el medio y otras especies. El objetivo de la aplicación Web desarrollada, basada en estándares OGC para el acceso y visualización de información geográfica, es dotar a los geobotánicos de una herramienta sencilla y accesible en Web, que ayude en los procesos de estudio y análisis de la distribución de especies vegetales en el territorio y sus condicionantes. La aplicación, desarrollada a partir de los datos del inventario botánico del profesor Martínez Labarga de la cuenca media del Tajo, permite realizar estudios y análisis geobotánicos, apoyándose en la confección de mapas corológicos y la correlación de la distribución de cada especie con las magnitudes climáticas de temperatura o precipitación y las características de los suelos sobre los que aparece. Esta aplicación dispone de una arquitectura de 3 capas (almacenes de datos, servicios y clientes) y ha sido desarrollada con tecnologías OpenSource (PostGIS, Geoserver, Apache httpd, OpenLayers, GeoExt, php) y consume datos propios publicados mediante estándares OGC (WMS y WFS) y capas de la IDE tanto de suelos (litológico, geológico, topográfico, ortoimágenes) como climáticos (precipitaciones y temperaturas ?CREAF). El desarrollo de la aplicación y la prueba de concepto han permitido identificar algunos problemas de rendimiento a la hora de realizar consultas al Atlas Climático de la Península Ibérica y se ha propuesto una solución basada en el cacheado de datos consultados en tiempo de ejecució

    Clinical and Functional Outcome of Meniscal Injuries Treated with Platelet-Rich Plasma: A Single-Center Case Series

    Meniscal injuries are among the most frequently encountered conditions in the knee joint. Therapeutic approaches are diverse and are largely dependent on the extent and location of the injury. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and functional outcomes of an intraarticular and percutaneous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection regime in patients with stable meniscal injuries. Demographics, the type of tear, affected knee, surgical procedure, type of intervention, follow-up period, and outcomes were recorded in all cases. Patient-reported outcome measures included the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) and Tegner activity level scale. Overall patient satisfaction, quality of life, and pain intensity were also assessed. A total of 38 cases (8 females) had sustained a stable meniscal lesion (32 medial, 6 lateral) and met the inclusion criteria. All of them received three intraarticular and percutaneous PRP injections. Patients receiving the PRP injection regime reported clinically (p = 0.000) and functionally (p = 0.000 and p = 0.001) significant improvement in all outcome measures during this interval. All patients reported they were very satisfied or satisfied with the outcome. The results of this study suggest that the treatment of stable meniscal injuries with percutaneous–intraarticular PRP injections can achieve a significant clinical and functional improvement.This research received no external funding.     Las aplicaciones que ofrecen las nanopartículas magnéticas basadas en sus interacciones con los campos magnéticos estáticos o variantes en el tiempo, son uno de los principales y más prometedores focos de investigación biomédica en la actualidad. La caracterización magnética de las partículas y de su comportamiento en el interior de materiales biológicos es un aspecto susceptible de numerosas mejoras, siendo además uno de los pasos preliminares fundamentales a la realización de cualquiera de los experimentos que las empleen. En este artículo se presenta una nueva herramienta que facilitará esta tarea, además de presentar futuras líneas de acción que ofrecerán nuevas posibilidades en el mundo de la nanobioingeniería, partiendo de una breve introducción teórica en la que se presentarán los principios físicos que se encuentran en la base de las aplicaciones biomédicas de las nanopartículas.     Relevance of motion-related assessment metrics in laparoscopic surgery

    INTRODUCTION: Motion metrics have become an important source of information when addressing the assessment of surgical expertise. However, their direct relationship with the different surgical skills has not been fully explored. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relevance of motion-related metrics in the evaluation processes of basic psychomotor laparoscopic skills, as well as their correlation with the different abilities sought to measure. METHODS: A framework for task definition and metric analysis is proposed. An explorative survey was first conducted with a board of experts to identify metrics to assess basic psychomotor skills. Based on the output of that survey, three novel tasks for surgical assessment were designed. Face and construct validation study was performed, with focus on motion-related metrics. Tasks were performed by 42 participants (16 novices, 22 residents and 4 experts). Movements of the laparoscopic instruments were registered with the TrEndo tracking system and analyzed. RESULTS: Time, path length and depth showed construct validity for all three tasks. Motion smoothness and idle time also showed validity for tasks involving bi-manual coordination and tasks requiring a more tactical approach respectively. Additionally, motion smoothness and average speed showed a high internal consistency, proving them to be the most task-independent of all the metrics analyzed. CONCLUSION: Motion metrics are complementary and valid for assessing basic psychomotor skills, and their relevance depends on the skill being evaluated. A larger clinical implementation, combined with quality performance information, will give more insight on the relevance of the results shown in this study

    MICa/b-dependent activation of natural killer cells by CD64+ inflammatory type 2 dendritic cells contributes to autoimmunity

The potential contribution of innate immune cells, such as natural killer (NK) cells and dendritic cells (DC), to the pSS pathology remains understudied. Here, we identified an enriched CD16+ CD56hi NK cell subset associated with higher cytotoxic function, as well as elevated proportions of inflammatory CD64+ conventional dendritic cell (cDC2) subtype that expresses increased levels of MICa/b, the ligand for the activating receptor NKG2D, in pSS individuals. Circulating cDC2 from pSS patients efficiently induced activation of cytotoxic NK cells ex vivo and were found in proximity to CD56+ NK cells in salivary glands (SG) from pSS patients. Interestingly, transcriptional activation of IFN signatures associated with the RIG-I/DDX60 pathway, IFN I receptor, and its target genes regulate the expression of NKG2D ligands on cDC2 from pSS patients. Finally, increased proportions of CD64hi RAE-1+ cDC2 and NKG2D+CD11b+CD27+ NK cells were present in vivo in the SG after poly I:C injection.     Utility of circulating serum miRNA profiles to evaluate the potential risk and severity of immune-mediated inflammatory disorders

    Immune-mediated inflammatory disorders (IMID) are a group of diseases that present inflammation as a major pathogenic mechanism. They affect 15% of the population and pose a heavy socio-economic burden. Despite the growing knowledge on the etiopathogenesis of these diseases and the marked improvement in their management, there is a lack of predictive markers of IMID development or severity suitable for early diagnosis and adjustment of treatment intensity. The possibility that certain circulating miRNA profiles could be used as biomarkers of risk of development and/or severity of several autoimmune diseases has fuelled the interest in using them to improve the selection of successful treatments. The multi-pronged approach proposed here sought to reveal circulating miRNAs and miRNA signatures that could act as new predictive biomarkers of IMID development and severity. Our results showed that the circulating levels of miR-19b and miR-26b were significantly decreased (p < 0.001) in IMID patients compared to controls. Furthermore, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that these miRNAs were suitable discriminators capable to identify an IMID, with areas under the curve (AUC) of 0.85 and 0.83, respectively. In addition, we established that miR-19a and miR-143 were significantly increased in IMID patients with severe disease (p < 0.05). In summary, our findings identify two different miRNA signatures. One of them is associated with the presence of IMIDs and could lead to the development of tools for their early detection.
