Numerical viscosity in hydrodynamics simulations in general relativity

We present an alternative method to estimate the numerical viscosity in simulations of astrophysical objects, which is based in the damping of fluid oscillations. We apply the method to general relativistic hydrodynamic simulations using a spherical coordinates. We perform 1D-spherical and 2D- axisymmetric simulations of radial oscillations in spherical systems. We calibrate first the method with simulations with added bulk viscosity and study the differences between different numerical schemes. We apply the method to radial oscillations of neutron stars and we conclude that the main source of numerical viscosity in this case is the surface of the star. We expect that this method could be useful to compute the resolution requirements and limitations of the numerical simulations in different astrophysical scenarios in the future.Comment: Accepted for publication in Class. The estimation of the energy production of wind farms is a key factor for the development of wind energy projects. Currently, these estimations utilize only a few onsite measurement points to estimate the wind resource at the location of the wind turbines by means of a wind flow model. One of the most advanced wind flow models utilized in the wind energy industry for this purpose are the steady-state computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models. These models have proven to be successful in modelling the wind flow in complex terrain. Nevertheless, there are some limitations in their applicability at sites with complex weather patterns. In this PhD thesis, these limitations are addressed by coupling a CFD model with a mesoscale meteorological model (MMM). MMMs are widely used for weather forecast and can reproduce the complex weather phenomena that a CFD model lacks. In this study, the framework to couple both models consists in utilizing the mesoscale simulation results to compute the boundary conditions of the CFD model. Two variants of the meso-microscale coupling approach are here studied. The first approach consists in utilizing the average values of the mesoscale fields by wind directional sector. It is shown that this approach improves the wind estimations in complex terrain and in areas that are located at the wake of the terrain features of a site. Nevertheless, the approach presents important limitations in sites where the wind blows from few wind directions. The second approach addresses this limitation by extracting weather patterns from the mesoscale simulations by means of a fully automated clustering methodology. This classification technique is capable of extracting the predominant weather patterns and organizing them in a meaningful way. Overall, by downscaling the extracted patterns the modelling error is reduced compared with the mesoscale model. Such a methodology has a lot of potential for wind turbine wake studies as well as for forecasting solutions that utilize CFD models

We present a new criterion for the weighted LpLqL^p-L^q boundedness of multiplier operators for Laguerre and Hermite expansions that arise from a Laplace-Stieltjes transform. As a special case, we recover known results on weighted estimates for Laguerre and Hermite fractional integrals with a unified and simpler approach.Comment: 22 pages; new section added, corrected typos, new references adde

    Get PDF

Economic effects of road accessibility in the Pyrenees: user perspective

At present, Spain faces one of the key moments in planning the future design of the infrastructure network. As a consequence of the critical role played by haulage in intra-European trade, the most important investments are those that guarantee that road haulage traffic can move freely at the borders. That is why it is necessary to make serious evaluations of the economic and social profitability of these investments. Normally the most significant social benefit of investment projects in transport infrastructure is time saving, which in turn changes traffic intensity. In this article we analyse the changes in the user excess caused by public investment in transport infrastructure planned by the Spanish government and which will be located on the border between Spain and France. In particular, we study the increase in network user surplus for HGV traffic in the Spanish and French border zones in the Pyrenees.Intra-European trade, time saving, user surplus, gravitational model

Do experimental subjects favor their friends?

Ideally we would like subjects of experiments to be perfect strangers so that the situation they face at the lab is not just a part of a long run interaction. Unfortunately, it is not easy to reach those conditions and experimenters try to mitigate any effects coming form these out-of- the-lab relationships by, for instance, randomly matching subjects. However, even if this type of procedure is used, there is a positive probability that a subject faces a friend or an acquaintance. We find evidence that social proximity among subjects is irrelevant for experiments’ results in dictator games. Thus, although ideal conditions are not met, relations among subjects are not contaminating the experiments’ results.experimental procedures, friendship effect, dictator game, fairness.

The role of personal involvement and responsibility in dictatorial allocations: a classroom investigation

This paper explores new motivations behind giving. Specifically, it focuses on personal involvement and responsibility to explain why decision makers give positive amounts in dictatorial decisons. The experiment is designed to uncover these motivations. Subjects face the problem of a dictator's allocation of an indivisible pie P to one of two players; indivisibility creates an extremely unequal outcome and the dictator is given a chance to correct this outcome at a cost. The willingness to pay to correct the outcome is examined under different scenarios so that we learn about several features concerning preferences.Fairness, Dictator game, Moral cost.
