Introduction of article-processing charges for Population Health Metrics
Population Health Metrics is an open-access online electronic journal published by BioMed Central – it is universally and freely available online to everyone, its authors retain copyright, and it is archived in at least one internationally recognised free repository. To fund this, from November 1 2003, authors of articles accepted for publication will be asked to pay an article-processing charge of US$500. This editorial outlines the reasons for the introduction of article-processing charges and the way in which this policy will work. Waiver requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis, by the Editor-in-Chief. Article-processing charges will not apply to authors whose institutions are 'members' of BioMed Central. Current members include NHS England, the World Health Organization, the US National Institutes of Health, Harvard, Princeton and Yale universities, and all UK universities. No charge is made for articles that are rejected after peer review. Many funding agencies have also realized the importance of open access publishing and have specified that their grants may be used directly to pay APCs
Positivity of the English language
Over the last million years, human language has emerged and evolved as a
fundamental instrument of social communication and semiotic representation.
People use language in part to convey emotional information, leading to the
central and contingent questions: (1) What is the emotional spectrum of natural
language? and (2) Are natural languages neutrally, positively, or negatively
biased? Here, we report that the human-perceived positivity of over 10,000 of
the most frequently used English words exhibits a clear positive bias. More
deeply, we characterize and quantify distributions of word positivity for four
large and distinct corpora, demonstrating that their form is broadly invariant

Interpreting physical performance in professional soccer match-play: Should we be more pragmatic in our approach?
Academic and practitioner interest in the physical performance of male professional soccer players in the competition setting determined via time-motion analyses has grown substantially over the last four decades leading to a substantial body of published research and aiding development of a more systematic evidence-based framework for physical conditioning. Findings have forcibly shaped contemporary opinions in the sport with researchers and practitioners frequently emphasising the important role that physical performance plays in match outcomes. Time-motion analyses have also influenced practice as player conditioning programmes can be tailored according to the different physical demands identified across individual playing positions. Yet despite a more systematic approach to physical conditioning, data indicate that even at the very highest standards of competition, the contemporary player is still susceptible to transient and end-game fatigue. Over the course of this article, the author suggests that a more pragmatic approach to interpreting the current body of time-motion analysis data and its application in the practical setting is nevertheless required. Examples of this are addressed using findings in the literature to examine: a) the association between competitive physical performance and ‘success’ in professional soccer, b) current approaches to interpreting differences in time-motion analysis data across playing positions and, c) whether data can realistically be used to demonstrate the occurrence of fatigue in match-play. Gaps in the current literature and directions for future research are also identified
Limitations of radical thiol-ene reactions for polymer-polymer conjugation
In this work, we report our findings on the use of radical thiol-ene chemistry for polymer-polymer conjugation. The manuscript combines the results from the Preparative Macromolecular Chemistry group from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Polymer Chemistry Research group from Ghent University (UGent), which allowed for an investigation over a very broad range of reaction conditions. In particular, thermal and UV initiation methods for the radical thiol-ene process were compared. In the KIT group, the process was studied as a tool for the synthesis of star polymers by coupling multifunctional thiol core molecules with poly(n-butyl acrylate) macromonomers (MM), employing thermally decomposing initiators. The product purity and thus reaction efficiency was assessed via electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Although the reactions with 10 or 5 equivalents of thiol with respect to macromonomer were successful, the coupling reaction with a one-to-one ratio of MM to thiol yielded only a fraction of the targeted product, besides a number of side products. A systematic parameter study such as a variation of the concentration and nature of the initiator and the influence of thiol-to-ene ratio was carried out. Further experiments with poly(styrene) and poly(isobornyl acrylate) containing a vinylic end group confirmed that thermal thiol-ene conjugation is far from quantitative in terms of achieving macromolecular star formation. In parallel, the UGent group has been focusing on photo-initiated thiol-ene chemistry for the synthesis of functional polymers on one hand and block copolymers consisting of poly(styrene) (PS) and poly (vinyl acetate) (PVAc) on the other hand. Various functionalization reactions showed an overall efficient thiol-ene process for conjugation reactions of polymers with low molecular weight compounds (∼90% coupling yield). However, while SEC and FT-IR analysis of the conjugated PS-PVAc products indicated qualitative evidence for a successful polymer-polymer conjugation, 1H NMR and elemental analysis revealed a low conjugation efficiency of about 23% for a thiol-to-ene ratio equal to one. Blank reactions using typical thiol-ene conditions indicated that bimolecular termination reactions occur as competitive side reactions explaining why a molecular weight increase is observed even though the thiol-ene reaction was not successful. The extensive study of both research groups indicates that radical thiol-ene chemistry should not be proposed as a straightforward conjugation tool for polymer-polymer conjugation reactions. Head-to-head coupling is a major reaction pathway, which interrupts the propagation cycle of the thiol-ene process. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
Overcoming barriers to engaging socio-economically disadvantaged populations in CHD primary prevention: a qualitative study
<p><b>Background:</b> Preventative medicine has become increasingly important in efforts to reduce the burden of chronic disease in industrialised countries. However, interventions that fail to recruit socio-economically representative samples may widen existing health inequalities. This paper explores the barriers and facilitators to engaging a socio-economically disadvantaged (SED) population in primary prevention for coronary heart disease (CHD).</p>
<p><b>Methods:</b> The primary prevention element of Have a Heart Paisley (HaHP) offered risk screening to all eligible individuals. The programme employed two approaches to engaging with the community: a) a social marketing campaign and b) a community development project adopting primarily face-to-face canvassing. Individuals living in areas of SED were under-recruited via the social marketing approach, but successfully recruited via face-to-face canvassing. This paper reports on focus group discussions with participants, exploring their perceptions about and experiences of both approaches.</p>
<p><b>Results:</b> Various reasons were identified for low uptake of risk screening amongst individuals living in areas of high SED in response to the social marketing campaign and a number of ways in which the face-to-face canvassing approach overcame these barriers were identified. These have been categorised into four main themes: (1) processes of engagement; (2) issues of understanding; (3) design of the screening service and (4) the priority accorded to screening. The most immediate barriers to recruitment were the invitation letter, which often failed to reach its target, and the general distrust of postal correspondence. In contrast, participants were positive about the face-to-face canvassing approach. Participants expressed a lack of knowledge and understanding about CHD and their risk of developing it and felt there was a lack of clarity in the information provided in the mailing in terms of the process and value of screening. In contrast, direct face-to-face contact meant that outreach workers could explain what to expect. Participants felt that the procedure for uptake of screening was demanding and inflexible, but that the drop-in sessions employed by the community development project had a major impact on recruitment and retention.</p>
<p><b>Conclusion:</b> Socio-economically disadvantaged individuals can be hard-to-reach; engagement requires strategies tailored to the needs of the target population rather than a population-wide approach.</p>

Cranio-spinal migration of a metallic clip placed during arteriovenous malformation resection - A case report, review of the literature, and management strategies
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Microclip placement during AVM resection is generally accepted to be a safe practice in neurosurgery. Here, we describe an unusual complication involving cranio-spinal clip migration discovered five years after the initial AVM surgery.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>A 53-year-old man underwent resection of a superior vermian AVM that required the placement of two microclips during the procedure. Five years after surgery, the patient suffered from descending sensory radiculopathy that resolved spontaneously. The workup revealed cranio-spinal migration of one of the previously placed microclips.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>AVM clip migration is a rare phenomenon; however, the diagnosis should be entertained in patients with posterior fossa instrumentation who suffer from unusual neurologic symptoms.</p
B Cells Regulate Neutrophilia during Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection and BCG Vaccination by Modulating the Interleukin-17 Response
We have previously demonstrated that B cells can shape the immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, including the level of neutrophil infiltration and granulomatous inflammation at the site of infection. The present study examined the mechanisms by which B cells regulate the host neutrophilic response upon exposure to mycobacteria and how neutrophilia may influence vaccine efficacy. To address these questions, a murine aerosol infection tuberculosis (TB) model and an intradermal (ID) ear BCG immunization mouse model, involving both the μMT strain and B cell-depleted C57BL/6 mice, were used. IL (interleukin)-17 neutralization and neutrophil depletion experiments using these systems provide evidence that B cells can regulate neutrophilia by modulating the IL-17 response during M. tuberculosis infection and BCG immunization. Exuberant neutrophilia at the site of immunization in B cell-deficient mice adversely affects dendritic cell (DC) migration to the draining lymph nodes and attenuates the development of the vaccine-induced Th1 response. The results suggest that B cells are required for the development of optimal protective anti-TB immunity upon BCG vaccination by regulating the IL-17/neutrophilic response. Administration of sera derived from M. tuberculosis-infected C57BL/6 wild-type mice reverses the lung neutrophilia phenotype in tuberculous μMT mice. Together, these observations provide insight into the mechanisms by which B cells and humoral immunity modulate vaccine-induced Th1 response and regulate neutrophila during M. tuberculosis infection and BCG immunization. © 2013 Kozakiewicz et al
