Ekpyrosis and inflationary dynamics in heavy ion collisions: the role of quantum fluctuations
We summarize recent significant progress in the development of a
first-principles formalism to describe the formation and evolution of matter in
very high energy heavy ion collisions. The key role of quantum fluctuations
both before and after a collision is emphasized. Systematic computations are
now feasible to address early time dynamics essential to quantifying properties

Inequity in access to transplantation in the UK
Background and objectives Despite the presence of a universal health care system, it is unclear if there is intercenter variation in access to kidney transplantation in the United Kingdom. This study aims to assess whether equity exists in access to kidney transplantation in the United Kingdom after adjustment for patient-specific factors and center practice patterns.
Design, setting, participants, & measurements In this prospective, observational cohort study including all 71 United Kingdom kidney centers, incident RRT patients recruited between November 2011 and March 2013 as part of the Access to Transplantation and Transplant Outcome Measures study were analyzed to assess preemptive listing (n=2676) and listing within 2 years of starting dialysis (n=1970) by center.
Results Seven hundred and six participants (26%) were listed preemptively, whereas 585 (30%) were listed within 2 years of commencing dialysis. The interquartile range across centers was 6%–33% for preemptive listing and 25%–40% for listing after starting dialysis. Patient factors, including increasing age, most comorbidities, body mass index >35 kg/m2, and lower socioeconomic status, were associated with a lower likelihood of being listed and accounted for 89% and 97% of measured intercenter variation for preemptive listing and listing within 2 years of starting dialysis, respectively. Asian (odds ratio, 0.49; 95% confidence interval, 0.33 to 0.72) and Black (odds ratio, 0.43; 95% confidence interval, 0.26 to 0.71) participants were both associated with reduced access to preemptive listing; however Asian participants were associated with a higher likelihood of being listed after starting dialysis (odds ratio, 1.42; 95% confidence interval, 1.12 to 1.79). As for center factors, being registered at a transplanting center (odds ratio, 3.1; 95% confidence interval, 2.36 to 4.07) and a universal approach to discussing transplantation (odds ratio, 1.4; 95% confidence interval, 1.08 to 1.78) were associated with higher preemptive listing, whereas using a written protocol was associated negatively with listing within 2 years of starting dialysis (odds ratio, 0.7; 95% confidence interval, 0.58 to 0.9).
Conclusions Patient case mix accounts for most of the intercenter variation seen in access to transplantation in the United Kingdom, with practice patterns also contributing some variation. Socioeconomic inequity exists despite having a universal health care system
Integrating Association Mapping, Linkage Mapping, Fine Mapping with RNA Seq Conferring Seedling Vigor Improvement for Successful Crop Establishment in Deep Sown Direct-Seeded Rice
Background: Ongoing large-scale shift towards direct seeded rice (DSR) necessitates a convergence of breeding and genetic approaches for its sustenance and harnessing natural resources and environmental benefits. Improving seedling vigour remains key objective for breeders working with DSR. The present study aims to understand the genetic control of seedling vigour in deep sown DSR. Combined genome-wide association mapping, linkage mapping, fine mapping, RNA-sequencing to identify candidate genes and validation of putative candidate genes were performed in the present study.
Results: Significant phenotypic variations were observed among genotypes in both F3:4:5 and BC2F2:3 populations. The mesocotyl length showed significant positive correlation with %germination, root and shoot length. The 881 kb region on chromosome 7 reported to be associated with mesocotyl elongation. RNA-seq data and RT-PCR results identified and validated seven potential candidate genes. The four promising introgression lines free from linkage drag and with longer mesocotyl length, longer root length, semi-dwarf plant height have been identified.
Conclusion: The study will provide rice breeders (1) the pre breeding material in the form of anticipated DSR adapted introgression lines possessing useful traits and alleles improving germination under deep sown DSR field conditions (2) the base for the studies involving functional characterization of candidate genes. The development and utilization of improved introgression lines and molecular markers may play an important role in genomics-assisted breeding (GAB) during the pyramiding of valuable genes providing adaptation to rice under DSR. Our results offer a robust and reliable package that can contribute towards enhancing genetic gains in direct seeded rice breeding programs
Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for inclusive jet production in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV
We report a new STAR measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry
A_LL for inclusive jet production at mid-rapidity in polarized p+p collisions
at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. The data, which cover jet
transverse momenta 5 < p_T < 30 GeV/c, are substantially more precise than
previous measurements. They provide significant new constraints on the gluon
spin contribution to the nucleon spin through the comparison to predictions
derived from one global fit of polarized deep-inelastic scattering

System-Size Independence of Directed Flow Measured at the BNL Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider
We measure directed flow (ν_1) for charged particles in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at √S_(NN)=200 and 62.4 GeV, as a function of pseudorapidity (η), transverse momentum (p_t), and collision centrality, based on data from the STAR experiment. We find that the directed flow depends on the incident energy but, contrary to all available model implementations, not on the size of the colliding system at a given centrality. We extend the validity of the limiting fragmentation concept to ν_1 in different collision systems, and investigate possible explanations for the observed sign change in ν_1(p_t)
Spin alignment measurements of the and vector mesons at RHIC
We present the first spin alignment measurements for the and
vector mesons produced at mid-rapidity with transverse momenta up
to 5 GeV/c at = 200 GeV at RHIC. The diagonal spin density
matrix elements with respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions are
= 0.32 0.04 (stat) 0.09 (syst) for the
( GeV/c) and = 0.34 0.02 (stat) 0.03
(syst) for the ( GeV/c), and are constant with transverse
momentum and collision centrality. The data are consistent with the unpolarized
expectation of 1/3 and thus no evidence is found for the transfer of the
orbital angular momentum of the colliding system to the vector meson spins.
Spin alignments for and in Au+Au collisions were also measured
with respect to the particle's production plane. The result,
= 0.41 0.02 (stat) 0.04 (syst), is consistent with that in p+p
collisions, = 0.39 0.03 (stat) 0.06 (syst), also
measured in this work. The measurements thus constrain the possible size of

Measurements of meson production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC
We present results for the measurement of meson production via its
charged kaon decay channel in Au+Au collisions at
, 130, and 200 GeV, and in and +Au collisions
at GeV from the STAR experiment at the BNL Relativistic
Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The midrapidity () meson transverse
momentum () spectra in central Au+Au collisions are found to be well
described by a single exponential distribution. On the other hand, the
spectra from , +Au and peripheral Au+Au collisions show power-law tails
at intermediate and high and are described better by Levy
distributions. The constant yield ratio vs beam species, collision
centrality and colliding energy is in contradiction with expectations from
models having kaon coalescence as the dominant mechanism for production
at RHIC. The yield ratio as a function of is consistent
with a model based on the recombination of thermal quarks up to GeV/, but disagrees at higher transverse momenta. The measured nuclear
modification factor, , for the meson increases above unity at
intermediate , similar to that for pions and protons, while is
suppressed due to the energy loss effect in central Au+Au collisions. Number of
constituent quark scaling of both and for the meson
with respect to other hadrons in Au+Au collisions at =200 GeV
at intermediate is observed. These observations support quark
coalescence as being the dominant mechanism of hadronization in the
intermediate region at RHIC.Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, 4 table
Observation of charge-dependent azimuthal correlations and possible local strong parity violation in heavy ion collisions
Parity-odd domains, corresponding to non-trivial topological solutions of the
QCD vacuum, might be created during relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These
domains are predicted to lead to charge separation of quarks along the orbital
momentum of the system created in non-central collisions. To study this effect,
we investigate a three particle mixed harmonics azimuthal correlator which is a
\P-even observable, but directly sensitive to the charge separation effect. We
report measurements of this observable using the STAR detector in Au+Au and
Cu+Cu collisions at =200 and 62~GeV. The results are presented
as a function of collision centrality, particle separation in rapidity, and
particle transverse momentum. A signal consistent with several of the
theoretical expectations is detected in all four data sets. We compare our
results to the predictions of existing event generators, and discuss in detail
possible contributions from other effects that are not related to parity
