    Good appearance and shape descriptors for object category recognition

    In the problem of object category recognition, we have studied different families of descriptors exploiting RGB and 3D information. Furthermore, we have proven practically that 3D shape-based descriptors are more suitable for this type of recognition due to low shape intra-class variance, as opposed to image texture-based. In addition, we have also shown how an efficient Naive Bayes Nearest Neighbor (NBNN) classifier can scale to a large hierarchical RGB-D Object Dataset [2] and achieve, with a single descriptor type, an accuracy close to state-of-art learning based approaches using combined descriptors

    Artroplastia total da anca: Colocação da haste femoral com manutenção dos parafusos de uma osteossíntese antiga

    Apresenta-se o caso de um doente que foi submetido, em 1958, a uma osteotomia de valgização para o tratamento de uma fractura traumática do colo do fémur, tendo sido utilizado um cravo-placa de Mac Laughlin para a osteossíntese da osteotomia. Em Janeiro do ano 2000, procedeu-se à implantação de uma prótese total da anca porque o doente apresentava uma coxartrose do grau IV. Durante o acto operatório confirmou-se que a placa e os quatro parafusos se encontravam revestidos por tecido ósseo, o qual foi removido. As cabeças dos parafusos, com ranhuras de tipo Parker, foram fragilizadas, fracturadas e excisadas com osteótomos. A extracção do cravo não apresentou dificuldades. Removeu-se a placa e não se procedeu à excisão da parte roscada dos parafusos. Implantou-se uma prótese total cimentada autobloqueante, uma vez que a parte roscada dos parafusos não constituía um obstáculo à implantação de uma haste femoral cimentada de diâmetro 15. Reforçou-se o leito cortical fragilizado pela extracção da placa com enxerto esponjoso autógeno da cabeça femoral excisada. Recorre ao Serviço de Urgência, um ano após o diagnóstico, em mutismo, sendo que os exames complementares de diagnóstico revelaram uma lesão cerebral, interpretada como nova metástase. No seu processo clínico, tem uma diretiva antecipada de vontade. Este é um documento formal que explicita quais os cuidados que pretende ou não receber em final de vida.     Taming hierarchical connectors

    Building and maintaining complex systems requires good software engineering practices, including code modularity and reuse. The same applies in the context of coordination of complex component-based systems. This paper investigates how to verify properties of complex coordination patterns built hierarchically, i.e., built from composing blocks that are in turn built from smaller blocks. Most existing approaches to verify properties flatten these hierarchical models before the verification process, losing the hierarchical structure. We propose an approach to verify hierarchical models using containers as actions; more concretely, containers interacting with their neighbours. We present a dynamic modal logic tailored for hierarchical connectors, using Reo and Petri Nets to illustrate our approach. We realise our approach via a prototype implementation available online to verify hierarchical Reo connectors, encoding connectors and formulas into mCRL2 specifications and formulas.publishe

    Typological classification of clayey raw materials for ceramics manufacture, in the Tábua region (central Portugal)

    Mapping of clay resources in the Cenozoic deposits of the Tábua region (central Portugal) has been carried out, together with the chemical, mineralogical and technological characterization of seventeen clay samples. The study was undertaken to relate the lithostratigraphic units and the typology of raw materials with regard to the manufacture of ceramics. The sedimentary succession comprises two units with different suitability for the manufacture of ceramics: an upper unit, with clays that present technological restrictions; and a lower unit with a much greater potential. A small set of parameters has been identified which differentiate the typological units. These parameters allow a realistic estimation to be made of the ceramic properties of any clay layer sampled in the study area. It is anticipated that with minor field work and sampling, the typological column can also be used in adjacent areas

    Limitations and challenges of EIT-based monitoring of stroke volume and pulmonary artery pressure.

    Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) shows potential for radiation-free and noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring. However, many factors degrade the accuracy and repeatability of these measurements. Our goal is to estimate the impact of this variability on the EIT-based monitoring of two important central hemodynamic parameters: stroke volume (SV) and pulmonary artery pressure (PAP). We performed simulations on a 4D ([Formula: see text]) bioimpedance model of a human volunteer to study the influence of four potential confounding factors (electrode belt displacement, electrode detachment, changes in hematocrit and lung air volume) on the performance of EIT-based SV and PAP estimation. Results were used to estimate how these factors affect the EIT measures of either absolute values or relative changes (i.e. trending). Our findings reveal that the absolute measurement of SV via EIT is very sensitive to electrode belt displacements and lung conductivity changes. Nonetheless, the trending ability of SV EIT might be a promising alternative. The timing-based measurement of PAP is more robust to lung conductivity changes but sensitive to longitudinal belt displacements at severe hypertensive levels and to rotational displacements (independent of the PAP level). We identify and quantify the challenges of EIT-based SV and PAP monitoring. Absolute SV via EIT is challenging, but trending is feasible, while both the absolute and trending of PAP via EIT are mostly impaired by belt displacements

    To evaluate the reading performance of children, human assessment is usually involved, where a teacher or tutor has to take time to individually estimate the performance in terms of fluency (speed, accuracy and expression). Automatic estimation of reading ability can be an important alternative or complement to the usual methods, and can improve other applications such as e-learning. Techniques must be developed to analyse audio recordings of read utterances by children and detect the deviations from the intended correct reading i.e. disfluencies. For that goal, a database of 284 European Portuguese children from 6 to 10 years old (1st–4th grades) reading aloud amounting to 20 h was collected in private and public Portuguese schools. This paper describes the design of the reading tasks as well as the data collection procedure.     Bacillary angiomatosis and bacillary peliosis are opportunistic infections caused by Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana, which occur in patients with late-stage infection. We report a case of bacillary angiomatosis in an HIV-infected patient with skin, bone, and probably liver involvement, The identification of the agent (B quintana ) was done by polymerase chain reaction in the skin specimen. The patient had complete regression of all lesions after a 6-month regimen of oral erythromycin

    Periodontitis and circulating blood cell profiles: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease with local and systemic implications. Evidence suggests consistent hematologic changes associated with periodontitis. Our aim was to critically appraise the available evidence on hemogram, leukogram, and thrombogram alterations in otherwise healthy patients suffering from periodontitis when compared with controls. For this systematic review (SR), we searched MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library (CENTRAL) for studies published up to June 2020. Both observational and interventional studies with baseline standard hematologic levels were included. Outcomes of interest were baseline hemogram, leukogram, and thrombogram values and the impact of periodontitis treatment on these outcomes. Upon risk of bias assessment, data extraction and both qualitative and quantitative (standardized mean differences) analyses were performed. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed to provide pooled estimates. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed (PROSPERO Reg. No. CRD42020164531). A total of 45 studies, eight intervention and 37 case–control studies, were identified after the final search of 3,012 titles. Following quality assessment, 43 articles were deemed to have low risk of bias, and two articles moderate risk. Meta-analyses confirmed that periodontitis was associated with both white and red cell lineages. Severe chronic periodontitis was associated with greater white blood cell counts (mean difference [MD] = 0.53, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.26–0.79) when compared with controls. Periodontitis was associated with a larger number of neutrophils (MD = 7.16%, 95% CI: 5.96–8.37) and lower mean platelet volume (MD = 0.30 fL, 95% CI: 0.49 to −0.10) compared with healthy participants. Nonsurgical periodontal treatment was associated with a decrease in white blood cell (WBC) levels (MD = 0.28 10 9/L, 95% CI: −0.47 to −0.08) in patients with chronic periodontitis. Periodontitis is associated with hematologic changes (Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy [SORT] A recommendation). Higher WBC levels, higher neutrophil levels, higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and lower mean platelet volumes are the most common blood count findings. The association between periodontitis and WBC could be causal in nature. Further assessment to determine whether periodontitis causes changes in circulating blood cells and to identify the molecular mechanisms underlying these associations is warranted
