    Measurement of the νe and total 8B solar neutrino fluxes with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory phase-III data set

    This paper details the solar neutrino analysis of the 385.17-day phase-III data set acquired by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). An array of 3He proportional counters was installed in the heavy-water target to measure precisely the rate of neutrino-deuteron neutral-current interactions. This technique to determine the total active 8B solar neutrino flux was largely independent of the methods employed in previous phases. The total flux of active neutrinos was measured to be 5.54-0.31+0.33(stat.)-0.34+0.36(syst.)×106 cm-2 s-1, consistent with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of solar and reactor neutrino mixing parameters yielded the best-fit values of Δm2=7.59-0.21+0.19×10 -5eV2 and θ=34.4-1.2+1.3degrees

    Enteritis associated with adeno-virus-like particles in captive lorikeets

    This report describes necrotizing enteritis associated with intranuclear inclusion bodies and adenovirus-like particles in captive lorikeets from a well-managed pet shop in Northern Victoria, Australia (February 2002). The clinical signs, gross and histopathologic lesions in scaly breasted lorikeets (Trichoglossus chlorolepidotus) and rainbow lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) are discussed. This appears to be the first report of adenovirus infection in lorikeets

    Glutathione peroxidases of the potato cyst nematode Globodera Rostochiensis

    We report the cloning and characterisation of full-length DNAs complementary to RNA (cDNAs) encoding two glutathione peroxidases (GpXs) from a plant parasitic nematode, the potato cyst nematode (PCN) Globodera rostochiensis. One protein has a functional signal peptide that targets the protein for secretion from animal cells while the other is predicted to be intracellular. Both genes are expressed in all parasite stages tested. The mRNA encoding the intracellular GpX is present throughout the nematode second stage juvenile and is particularly abundant in metabolically active tissues including the genital primordia. The mRNA encoding the secreted GpX is restricted to the hypodermis, the outermost cellular layer of the nematode, a location from which it is likely to be secreted to the parasite surface. Biochemical studies confirmed the secreted protein as a functional GpX and showed that, like secreted GpXs of other parasitic nematodes, it does not metabolise hydrogen peroxide but has a preference for larger hydroperoxide substrates. The intracellular protein is likely to have a role in metabolism of active oxygen species derived from internal body metabolism while the secreted protein may protect the parasite from host defences.     The present study employed an in situ hybridisation technique to detect the expression of a number of FMRFamide-like peptide encoding (flp) genes, previously identified from Globodera pallida, in whole-mount preparations of the J(2) stage of this worm. gpflp-1, encoding the FMRFamide-related peptide (FaRP) KSAYMRFamide, was expressed in neurones associated with the circumpharyngeal nerve ring and specifically in a number of cell bodies in the lumbar ganglia of the perianal nerve ring. The lumbar ganglia and pre-anal ganglia along with the BDU neurones and a number of cells in the retrovesicular ganglion were observed to express gpflp-2, encoding KNKFEFIRFamide. gpflp-3 (encoding KHEYLRFamide) expression was localised to the anterior ganglion and a number of paired cells posterior to the circumpharyngeal nerve ring whilst expression of gpflp-4, encoding a number of -P(G/Q)VLRFamides. was localised to the retrovesicular ganglion. No expression of gpflp-5 was observed. Identification of the reactive cells has implicated distinct roles for the FaRPs encoded on these genes in regulation of both dorsal and ventral body wall muscles, the musculature of the vulva and in the function of a number of sensory structures in both the head and tail of G. pallida. Comparison with the expression patterns of analogous genes in Caenorhabditis elegans suggests that, whilst some of the encoded peptides are conserved between nematode species, their functions therein are distinct. Furthermore, the expression of some of these genes in a number of interneurones supports the idea that FaRPs fulfil neuromodulatory as well as neurotransmitter roles.
