    The dynamical nature of time

    Get PDF
It is usually assumed that the "tt" parameter in the equations of dynamics can be identified with the indication of the pointer of a clock. Things are not so easy, however. In fact, since the equations of motion can be written in terms of tt but also of t′=f(t)t'=f(t), ff being any well behaved function, each one of those infinite parametric times t′t' is as good as the Newtonian one to study classical dynamics. Here we show that the relation between the mathematical parametric time tt in the equations of dynamics and the physical dynamical time σ\sigma that is measured with clocks is more complex and subtle than usually assumed. These two times, therefore, must be carefully distinguished since their difference may have significant consequences. Furthermore, we show that not all the dynamical clock-times are necessarily equivalent and that the observational fingerprint of this non-equivalence has the same form as that of the Pioneer anomaly.Comment: 13 pages, no figure

Multibaseline phase unwrapping for InSAR topography estimation

    Get PDF
Multibaseline Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Interferometry (INSAR) can be successfully exploited for automatic phase unwrapping and high quality Digital Elevation Model (DEM) reconstruction. The information coming from several interferograms with different baselines increases the elevation ambiguity interval and allows automatic phase unwrapping. The height of each pixel in the image is considered as a random variable: a Maximum-Likelihood (ML) estimation of the height is carried out by exploiting the probability density function of the interferometric phase, that depends on the local coherence value. After phase unwrapping is possible to combine all the information available, getting a combined DEM that is more reliable than each single DEM. Results obtained using ERS-1/2 SAR data gathered over Vesuvius and Etna are presented. In both cases an accuracy better than 8 meters was obtained

Acute Treatment with Renal Denervation in a Patient with Resistant Hypertension and Hemorrhagic Stroke

A 49-year-old man with refractory hypertension was admitted to our hospital in a coma caused by hemorrhagic stroke. Severe hypertension was observed during hospitalization despite a full antihypertensive therapy. Considering the risk of enlargement of the intracranial hematoma, the decision was made to perform renal denervation (RDN). A significant blood pressure reduction was obtained after RDN. The patient had a progressive improvement of general conditions and came out of the coma after a few days. This case underlines the safety and the feasibility of RDN in a critically ill patient

A few remarks on integral representation for zonal spherical functions on the symmetric space SU(N)/SO(N,R)SU(N)/SO(N,\R)

    Get PDF
The integral representation on the orthogonal groups for zonal spherical functions on the symmetric space SU(N)/SO(N,R)SU(N)/SO(N,\R) is used to obtain a generating function for such functions. For the case N=3 the three-dimensional integral representation reduces to a one-dimensional one.Comment: Latex file, 10 pages, amssymb.sty require

Performance analysis of MPEG-4 decoder and encoder

© 2002 Croatian Soc. Electronics in Marine-ELMAR. A performance analysis of MPEG-4 encoder and decoder programs on a standard personal computer is presented. The paper first describes the MPEG-4 computational load and discusses related works, then outlines the performance analysis. Experimental results show that while the decoder program can be easily executed in real time, the encoder requires execution times in the order of seconds per frame which call for substantial optimisation to satisfy real-time constraints

Observation of electro-activated localized structures in broad area VCSELs

    Get PDF
We demonstrate experimentally the electro-activation of a localized optical structure in a coherently driven broad-area vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) operated below threshold. Control is achieved by electro-optically steering a writing beam through a pre-programmable switch based on a photorefractive funnel waveguide.Comment: 5 Figure

Resin-Bonded Prosthesis in Posterior Area to Prevent Early Marginal Bone Resorption in Implants Placed at Tissue Level

Aim: To evaluate the effect of the resin-bonded prosthesis (Maryland bridge) on marginal bone remodeling of implants placed at the tissue level in the posterior region. Methods: Consecutive healthy patients (n = 46) were included in this clinical study. Flapless not-submerged implants were placed with cover screws exposed and positioned approximately 0.5 mm above tissue level. Patients received the implant and a temporary resin-bonded prosthesis (RBP) (n = 22) or only the implant (n = 24). The RBPs were kept in place for 3 months and removed before impressions. The implants received a custom-made abutment and provisional resin crowns followed by definitive cemented metal-ceramic crowns after 2-3 weeks. The marginal bone level (MBL) was evaluated in a single-blind condition on scanned periapical radiographs and assessed mesially and distally (MBL-M/MBL-D). The bone levels of adjacent teeth (CEJ-M/CEJ-D) and the modification of the area between the implant and the mesial/distal teeth (Area-M/Area-D) were measured. All measurements were made at 1, 3 (pre-loading time) and 12 months (post-loading time). Linear regression models were fitted to evaluate the existence of any significant difference. Results: A total of 44 patients (20 Female, 24 Male; Mean age: 53.9 +/- 10.3) completed the study. Two patients were excluded for fractured RBP or de-bonding. The drop-out was of 4.3%. After 12 months, all implants were free from complications. No peri-implantitis or mucositis were observed. The RBP group showed the most stable MBL at 12 months (-0.07 +/- 0.41), statistically different from the non-RBP group (-0.67 +/- 0.52). CEJ-M and CEJ-D were stable in both groups. Conclusion: The proposed approach of the use of RBP creates a more stable marginal bone level around implants placed at the tissue level, resulting in a reliable technique to protect bone tissue from mechanical and occlusal trauma during the healing period and osteointegration

PIXE and ToF-SIMS analysis of streaker samplers filters

    Get PDF
This paper presents methodological innovations introduced in the characterisation of urban aerosol collected in Italy in a recent campaign. Two complementary ion beam analysis (IBA) techniques were used to analyse Nuclepore filters used in continuous streaker samplers to collect airborne particles in four Italian towns. Na to Pb elemental concentrations were obtained by particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE), while time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) produced, on the same samples, time trends for several elements and molecular fragments. In addition, light attenuation measurements were used as a tracer for black carbon. The data produced by these three techniques was merged into a unique data set to address the characterisation of particulate matter sources. Correlations between elemental concentration trends (PIXE) and relative trends for molecular fragments (ToF-SIMS) and black carbon (light attenuation) have been studied by cluster and principal component analysis
