    Tunable cavity coupling of the zero phonon line of a nitrogen-vacancy defect in diamond

    We demonstrate the tunable enhancement of the zero phonon line of a single nitrogen-vacancy color center in diamond at cryogenic temperature. An open cavity fabricated using focused ion beam milling provides mode volumes as small as 1.24 μ\mum3^3. In-situ tuning of the cavity resonance is achieved with piezoelectric actuators. At optimal coupling of the full open cavity the signal from individual zero phonon line transitions is enhanced by about a factor of 10 and the overall emission rate of the NV−^- center is increased by 40% compared with that measured from the same center in the absence of cavity field confinement. This result is important for the realization of efficient spin-photon interfaces and scalable quantum computing using optically addressable solid state spin qubits.Comment: 11 pages Main Article + 4 pages Supplementary Info Typos fixed from v

    Intervertebral disc decompression following endplate damage: implications for disc degeneration depend on spinal level and age

    Study Design. Mechanical and morphological studies on cadaveric spines. Objective. To explain how spinal level and age influence disc degeneration arising from endplate fracture. Summary of Background Data. Disc degeneration can be initiated by damage to a vertebral body endplate, but it is unclear why endplate lesions, and patterns of disc degeneration, vary so much with spinal level and age. Methods. One hundred seventy-four cadaveric motion segments, from T7–T8 to L5–S1 and aged 19 to 96 years, were subjected to controlled compressive overload to damage a vertebral body. Stress profilometry was performed before and after damage to quantify changes in intradiscal pressure, and compressive stresses in the annulus. Eighty-six of the undamaged vertebral bodies were then sectioned in the midsagittal plane, and the thickness of the central bony endplate was measured from microradiographs. Regression analysis was used to compare the relative influences of spinal level, age, disc degeneration, and sex on results obtained. Results. Compressive overload caused endplate fracture at an average force of 3.4 kN, and reduced motion segment height by an average 1.88 mm. Pressure loss in the adjacent nucleus pulposus decreased from 93% at T8–T9 to 38% at L4–L5 (R2 = 22%, P < 0.001), and increased with age (R2 = 19%, P < 0.001), especially in male specimens. Stress concentrations in the posterior annulus increased after endplate fracture, with the effect being greatest at upper spinal levels (R2 = 7%, P < 0.001). Endplate thickness increased by approximately 50% between T11 and L5 (R2 = 21%, P < 0.001). Conclusion. Endplate fracture creates abnormal stress distributions in the adjacent intervertebral disc, increasing the risk of internal disruption and degeneration. Effects are greatly reduced in the lower lumbar spine, and in young specimens, primarily because of differences in nucleus volume, and materials properties, respectively.     Stochastic Bundle Adjustment for Efficient and Scalable 3D Reconstruction

    Current bundle adjustment solvers such as the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm are limited by the bottleneck in solving the Reduced Camera System (RCS) whose dimension is proportional to the camera number. When the problem is scaled up, this step is neither efficient in computation nor manageable for a single compute node. In this work, we propose a stochastic bundle adjustment algorithm which seeks to decompose the RCS approximately inside the LM iterations to improve the efficiency and scalability. It first reformulates the quadratic programming problem of an LM iteration based on the clustering of the visibility graph by introducing the equality constraints across clusters. Then, we propose to relax it into a chance constrained problem and solve it through sampled convex program. The relaxation is intended to eliminate the interdependence between clusters embodied by the constraints, so that a large RCS can be decomposed into independent linear sub-problems. Numerical experiments on unordered Internet image sets and sequential SLAM image sets, as well as distributed experiments on large-scale datasets, have demonstrated the high efficiency and scalability of the proposed approach.     Perinatal outcomes associated with low birth weight in a historical cohort

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>To identify perinatal outcomes associated with low birth weight (LBW).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A retrospective cohort study in a tertiary maternity hospital. Analysis of the database on 43,499 liveborn infants delivered between 1986 and 2004 with low (n = 6,477) and normal (n = 37,467) birth weight. Outcomes associated with LBW were identified through crude and adjusted risk ratio (RR) and 95%CI with bivariate and multivariate analysis. The main outcomes were: onset of labor, mode of delivery, indication for cesarean section; amniotic fluid, fetal heart rate pattern, Apgar score, somatic gestational age, gender and congenital malformation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>LBW infants showed more frequently signs of perinatal compromise such as abnormal amniotic fluid volume (especially olygohydramnios), nonreassuring patterns of fetal heart rate, malformation, lower Apgar scores and lower gestational age at birth. They were associated with a greater risk of labor induction and cesarean delivery, but lower risk of forceps.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There was a clear association between LBW and unfavorable perinatal outcomes.</p

    Error determination in the photogrammetric assessment of shoreline changes

    The evaluation of error or uncertainty in shoreline change studies is an issue of prime importance for providing an adequate framework for calculated rates of change and to allow the establishment of threshold values above which the rates would be significant. In this note, a practical, easy-to-use method is presented to estimate error involved in the calculation of shoreline changes on aerial photographs, including the three most used types of shoreline indicators: high water line, dune/cliff toe and cliff top. This approach takes into account the specific characteristics of each shoreline proxy, such as relief in the case of the cliff top or tidal oscillations in the case of the high water line. At the same time it includes the error components that are independent from the proxy, basically related to the technical aspects of the process such as photo scanning and georeferencing. A practical example of application of the method is provided for several types of data inputs, based on shoreline changes around the Bay of Cádiz (SW Spain)
