Draft Whole-Genome Sequences of Xylella fastidiosa subsp. fastidiosa Strains TPD3 and TPD4, Isolated from Grapevines in Hou-li, Taiwan.
We report the draft assemblies of TPD3 and TPD4, two Xylella fastidiosa subsp. fastidiosa isolates infecting grapevines in Hou-li, Taiwan. TPD3 and TPD4 showed similar characteristics regarding genome size (2,483,503 bp and 2,491,539 bp, respectively), GC content (51.49% and 51.47%, respectively), and number of protein-coding sequences (2,394 and 2,413, respectively)
On the Use of Quantum Algebras in Rotation-Vibration Spectroscopy
A two-parameter deformation of the Lie algebra u is used, in conjunction
with the rotor system and the oscillator system, to generate a model for
rotation-vibration spectroscopy of molecules and nuclei.Comment: 10 pages, Latex File, published in Modern Group Theoretical Methods

The pioneer cohort of curriculum reform: Guinea pigs or trail-blazers?
With curriculum reform, whether we admit it or not, the first cohort of students will be 'test-driving' the new programme. Not only are they the pioneers of a new curriculum, but as they progress through their studies, they experience each year of the innovation for the first time. As curriculum designers, we learn from their experiences and their feedback to improve the programme content and delivery, invariably for subsequent cohorts. A considerable onus therefore rests with this pioneer group, and their contribution to curriculum design, evaluation and programme revision should be valued
Clonal diversity of Escherichia coli isolates from marketed beef in East Malaysia
Escherichia coli, including Shiga-like toxin producing E. coli (STEC), serogroup O157:H7 and E. coli O157, were isolated from raw beef marketed in Sarawak and Sabah, East Malaysia. Molecular subtyping by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was performed on 51 confirmed E. coli isolates. Of the 51 isolates, five were E. coli O157:H7, four E. coli O157, two non-O157 STEC and 40 other E. coli isolates (non-STEC). Digestion of chromosomal DNA from these E. coli isolates with restriction endonuclease XbaI (5′-TCTAGA-3′), followed by PFGE, produced 45 restriction endonuclease digestion profiles (REDPs) of 10–18 bands. E. coli O157:H7 isolates from one beef sample were found to have identical PFGE profiles. In contrast, E. coli serogroup O157 from different beef samples displayed considerable differences in their PFGE profiles. These suggested that E. coli isolates of both serogroups were not closely related. A large variety of PFGE patterns among non-STEC isolates were observed, demonstrating a high clonal diversity of E. coli in the beef marketed in East Malaysia. The distance matrix values (D), calculated showed that none of the pathogenic E. coli strains displayed close genetic relationship with the non-STEC strains. Based on the PFGE profiles, a dendrogram was generated and the isolates were grouped into five PFGE clusters (A–E). From the dendrogram, the most related isolates were E. coli O157:H7, grouped within cluster B. The STEC O157:H7 beef isolates were more closely related to the clinical E. coli O157:H7 isolate than the E. coli O157:H7 reference culture, EDL933. Cluster A, comprising many of other E. coli isolates was shown to be the most heterogeneous. PFGE was shown to possess high discriminatory power in typing pathogenic and non-pathogenic E. coli strains, and useful in studying possible clonal relationship among strains
Can a management pathway for chronic cough in children improve clinical outcomes: protocol for a multicentre evaluation
Background: Chronic cough is common and is associated with significant economic and human costs. While cough can be a problematic symptom without serious consequences, it could also reflect a serious underlying illness. Evidence shows that the management of chronic cough in children needs to be improved. Our study tests the hypothesis that the management of chronic cough in children with an evidence-based management pathway is feasible and reliable, and improves clinical outcomes
Persistence of magnetic field driven by relativistic electrons in a plasma
The onset and evolution of magnetic fields in laboratory and astrophysical
plasmas is determined by several mechanisms, including instabilities, dynamo
effects and ultra-high energy particle flows through gas, plasma and
interstellar-media. These processes are relevant over a wide range of
conditions, from cosmic ray acceleration and gamma ray bursts to nuclear fusion
in stars. The disparate temporal and spatial scales where each operates can be
reconciled by scaling parameters that enable to recreate astrophysical
conditions in the laboratory. Here we unveil a new mechanism by which the flow
of ultra-energetic particles can strongly magnetize the boundary between the
plasma and the non-ionized gas to magnetic fields up to 10-100 Tesla (micro
Tesla in astrophysical conditions). The physics is observed from the first
time-resolved large scale magnetic field measurements obtained in a laser
wakefield accelerator. Particle-in-cell simulations capturing the global plasma
and field dynamics over the full plasma length confirm the experimental
measurements. These results open new paths for the exploration and modelling of
ultra high energy particle driven magnetic field generation in the laboratory
Distinguishing Various Models of the 125 GeV Boson in Vector Boson Fusion
The hint of a new particle around 125 GeV at the LHC through the decay modes
of diphoton and a number of others may point to quite a number of
possibilities. While at the LHC the dominant production mechanism for the Higgs
boson of the standard model and some other extensions is via the gluon fusion
process, the alternative vector boson fusion is more sensitive to electroweak
symmetry breaking through the gauge-Higgs couplings and therefore can be used
to probe for models beyond the standard model. In this work, using the well
known dijet-tagging technique to single out the vector boson fusion mechanism,
we investigate its capability to discriminate a number of models that have been
suggested to give an enhanced inclusive diphoton production rate, including the
standard model Higgs boson, fermiophobic Higgs boson, Randall-Sundrum radion,
inert-Higgs-doublet model, two-Higgs-doublet model, and the MSSM. The rates in
vector-boson fusion can give more information of the underlying models to help
distinguishing among the models.Comment: 31 pages, 3 figures; in this version some wordings are change
