    Learning co-operatively : Networking engagement and experience

    In the UK context, one of the consequences of the new settlements for Further and Higher Education is that post-16 education is becoming ever more limited and limiting. Specifically older candidates potentially engaging with continued or advanced learning for the first time (or those re-entering education following redundancy, forced career change or educational and career interruption) are largely excluded or dissuaded from opportunities. Addressing these needs will require a close partnership between multiple agencies currently affecting educational engagement or delivering qualifications. It will demand a fresh assessment of the role of culture led learning, enterprise learning and citizen inspired knowledge exchange in a relationship with professional educators in both the public and private sector. The Learning Co-operative is a concept currently under investigation via a broad and inclusive collaborative partnership in the Salford City region. It aims to provide an over-arching framework for rhizomatic education and open shell curriculum management and a comprehensive learning progression framework entirely owned by the participant. A careful design perspective and sensitively structured on-line environment incorporating tools for the personalisation and presentation of learning can cut across different types of provision or endeavour and support the concept of a Co-operative Learning Network. There is then the problem of designing learning recognition so that it may be accumulated and transferred as credit reliably between differing contexts. The major consideration in all of this is one of ownership and how might the individual address their learning assets and start to take control of their own representation, future development and investment choices. The emerging concept of a Co-operative Learning Action Network is an idea sponsored by the University of Salford. It moves us towards a common framework for learning recognition and progression; supporting flexible and active life-wide learning through collaborative endeavour and participation

    Environmental barriers to sociality in an obligate eusocial sweat bee

A sufficiently long active season is postulated to have been a key factor facilitating the transition to eusociality. Many primitively eusocial species exhibit an annual life cycle, which is thought to preclude the expression of eusociality where the active season is too short to produce successive worker and reproductive broods. However, few studies have attempted to test this idea experimentally. We investigated environmental constraints on the expression of eusociality in the obligate primitively eusocial sweat bee Lasioglossum malachurum, by transplanting nest foundresses from the south to the far north of the United Kingdom, far beyond the natural range of L. malachurum. We show that transplanted bees can exhibit eusociality, but that the short length of the season and harsher environmental conditions could preclude its successful expression. In one year, when foundresses were transplanted only after provisioning first brood (B1) offspring, workers emerged in the north and provisioned a second brood (B2) of reproductives. In another year, when foundresses were transplanted prior to B1 being provisioned, they were just as likely to initiate nesting and provisioned just as many B1 cells as foundresses in the south. However, the life cycle was delayed by approximately 7 weeks and nests suffered 100% B1 mortality.     Lithic technological responses to Late Pleistocene glacial cycling at Pinnacle Point Site 5-6, South Africa

    There are multiple hypotheses for human responses to glacial cycling in the Late Pleistocene, including changes in population size, interconnectedness, and mobility. Lithic technological analysis informs us of human responses to environmental change because lithic assemblage characteristics are a reflection of raw material transport, reduction, and discard behaviors that depend on hunter-gatherer social and economic decisions. Pinnacle Point Site 5-6 (PP5-6), Western Cape, South Africa is an ideal locality for examining the influence of glacial cycling on early modern human behaviors because it preserves a long sequence spanning marine isotope stages (MIS) 5, 4, and 3 and is associated with robust records of paleoenvironmental change. The analysis presented here addresses the question, what, if any, lithic assemblage traits at PP5-6 represent changing behavioral responses to the MIS 5-4-3 interglacial-glacial cycle? It statistically evaluates changes in 93 traits with no a priori assumptions about which traits may significantly associate with MIS. In contrast to other studies that claim that there is little relationship between broad-scale patterns of climate change and lithic technology, we identified the following characteristics that are associated with MIS 4: increased use of quartz, increased evidence for outcrop sources of quartzite and silcrete, increased evidence for earlier stages of reduction in silcrete, evidence for increased flaking efficiency in all raw material types, and changes in tool types and function for silcrete. Based on these results, we suggest that foragers responded to MIS 4 glacial environmental conditions at PP5-6 with increased population or group sizes, 'place provisioning', longer and/or more intense site occupations, and decreased residential mobility. Several other traits, including silcrete frequency, do not exhibit an association with MIS. Backed pieces, once they appear in the PP5-6 record during MIS 4, persist through MIS 3.     IGD Motifs, Which Are Required for Migration Stimulatory Activity of Fibronectin Type I Modules, Do Not Mediate Binding in Matrix Assembly

    Picomolar concentrations of proteins comprising only the N-terminal 70-kDa region (70K) of fibronectin (FN) stimulate cell migration into collagen gels. The Ile-Gly-Asp (IGD) motifs in four of the nine FN type 1 (FNI) modules in 70K are important for such migratory stimulating activity. The 70K region mediates binding of nanomolar concentrations of intact FN to cell-surface sites where FN is assembled. Using baculovirus, we expressed wildtype 70K and 70K with Ile-to-Ala mutations in 3FNI and 5FNI; 7FNI and 9FNI; or 3FNI, 5FNI, 7FNI, and 9FNI. Wildtype 70K and 70K with Ile-to-Ala mutations were equally active in binding to assembly sites of FN-null fibroblasts. This finding indicates that IGD motifs do not mediate the interaction between 70K and the cell-surface that is important for FN assembly. Further, FN fragment N-3FNIII, which does not stimulate migration, binds to assembly sites on FN-null fibroblast. The Ile-to-Ala mutations had effects on the structure of FNI modules as evidenced by decreases in abilities of 70K with Ile-to-Ala mutations to bind to monoclonal antibody 5C3, which recognizes an epitope in 9FNI, or to bind to FUD, a polypeptide based on the F1 adhesin of Streptococcus pyogenes that interacts with 70K by the β-zipper mechanism. These results suggest that the picomolar interactions of 70K with cells that stimulate cell migration require different conformations of FNI modules than the nanomolar interactions required for assembly
