This work aimed to analyze diaspores biometric characteristics, the effect of different temperatures and light regimes on seed germination and on the initial seedlings’ growth of Ptychosperma macarthurii. The experiment was performed at the Horticulture Seed Laboratory, UNESP/FCAV, Jaboticabal, SP. The individual diaspores biometric analysis was performed by measuring the length, diameter, mass and weight of a thousand diaspores, the data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis. It was adopted a completely randomized design in a 5 × 2 factorial with four replications of 25 seeds per treatment. Five temperatures (25; 30; 35; 20-30 and 25-35 ºC) and two light regimes (presence and total absence of light) were evaluated. The variables analyzed were germination, germination speed index, average length of the primary root and shoot, diameter of the stem and seedlings total dry mass. The length, diameter and average weight of the diaspores were 12.54 mm, 6.05 mm and 0.1610 g, respectively. The seeds of Ptychosperma macarthurii germinated in a wide temperature range, reaching a higher germination percentage at 25 ºC and a higher germination speed index at 30 ºC, being classified as neutral photoblastics. The constant temperature of 30 ºC provided higher mean values for all seedlings’ biometric characteristics. This work aimed to analyze diaspores biometric characteristics, the effect of different temperatures and light regimes on seed germination and on the initial seedlings’ growth of Ptychosperma macarthurii. As swimming performance depends on many factors, the main purpose of this study was to verify the relationship among the mean stroke cycles rate (SR), mean stroke cycle length (SL), mean swimming velocity (SV), anthropometric variables and flexibility of recreational and college swimmers. Sixteen recreational swimmers (G1) and 10 college swimmers (G2) were evaluated in three replicates maximum bouts of 25 m swimming crawl. Results showed significant correlations between SL (G1 = 1.62 ± 0.22 m; G2 = 1.55 ± 0.19 m) and (1) body mass (G2 = 65.0 ± 11.9 Kg) and (2) upper limbs span (G1 = 177.2 ± 12.3 cm; G2 = 172.6 ± 15.8 cm) and (3) height (G1 = 172.9 ± 11.3 cm; G2 = 172.0 ± 14.3 cm). Regardless levels of flexibility, significant negative correlation was found between the magnitude of ankle joint (G1 = 4.68 ± 0.70; G2 = 4.80 ± 0.91) and SV (G1 = 1.31 ± 0.21 m.s-1; G2 = 1.57 ± 0.21 m.s-1), for both groups. We conclude that SL, even among no competitive level swimmers, seems to be an important evaluation component of swimming performance.

Compression and temperature manipulation are discussed as strategies to improve performance markers and recovery in sports. Here, we investigate the effects of compression stockings made with fabric, either combined or not with heating and cooling substances, on variables related to running performance and recovery. Ten trained runners (mean ± standard deviation age 45 ± 9 years old, body mass 69 ± 7 kg, height 166 ± 4 cm) with no experience of using compression garments performed an intense running session of 10 km, then wore a stocking for 24 h (randomized; without compression, compression, compression with camphor, and compression with menthol), and were evaluated on the following day, after running 5 km. The different types of compression stockings used 24 h before exercise did not affect running kinematics (p > 0.14), skin temperature (p > 0.05), heart rate (p > 0.12; mean value of maximal heart rate 156 bpm), comfort perception (p = 0.13; mean value of 7/10 points), or perception of recovery (p = 0.13; mean value of 7/10 points). In general, there were no effects of 24 h pre-exercise lower leg compression, including those treated with menthol and camphor applications on running kinematics, skin temperature, heart rate, or recovery perception in athletes undertaking consecutive running exercises

Late Paleozoic geodynamic evolution of the western North Patagonian Massif and its tectonic context along the southwestern Gondwana margin

    Get PDF
In this study, we propose a geodynamic model covering sedimentation, metamorphism, magmatism, and exhumation processes for the western North Patagonian Massif basement. The youngest detrital zircon population ages (ca. 369 ± 8 Ma) obtained in a schist sample constrains the sedimentation stage to the Carboniferous Period. A first prograde metamorphic stage (M1-D1) produced the main foliation (S1) under greenschist conditions (~ 500 °C; < 4.5 Kbars). This stage was possibly linked to the regional Carboniferous magmatism event (330?300 Ma). The Permian magmatism (ca. 290 Ma) likely induced partial melting and migmatization of the deepest metasedimentary suite. This event corresponds to the second prograde metamorphic stage (M2) that reached amphibolite conditions (690 °C and 6.5 Kbars). The beginning of the basement uplift corresponds to the first retrograde metamorphic stage possibly developed during Permian ? Triassic times (265?235 Ma). This event was triggered by NE-SW compression (σ1) and developed folds (D2-F2), second foliation (S2), micro-textural quartz deformation, and a retrograde evolution path for the garnet-bearing lithofacies. The final stage of the basement exhumation corresponds to the second retrograde metamorphic stage (D3) developed by NNW-SSE compression and linked to open folds (F3) in the Cushamen Formation. The characteristics of the western North Patagonian Massif geodynamic evolution and the adjacent basement regions suggest a paleotectonic subduction setting for the southwestern Gondwana margin during the late Paleozoic times.Fil: Marcos, Paulo. Lower Jurassic felsic diatreme volcanism recognized in central Patagonia as evidence of along-strike rift segmentation

    Get PDF
The early Jurassic volcanism of Central Patagonia covers an extensive area of50,000 km2 where the volcanic deposits occur as isolated systems. The volcanicrecords form an elongated belt in which the composition, depositional and geneticfeatures, show several differences along with its distribution. The Cañadón ChilenoComplex (CCHC), located in the Río Negro province, provides the opportunity toevaluate and improve the knowledge about the Lower Jurassic volcanic stratigraphyand the lower Jurassic regional setting of Central Patagonia.Based on the field and laboratory data developed in the present work, 22lithofacies were recognized and grouped into eight facies associations. Thecontinental sedimentary environments include alluvial fan deposits (FA 1),ephemeral deposits (FA 2), braided fluvial deposits (FA 3), alluvial plains, or overbanks (FA 4), and lacustrine deposits (FA 9). On the other hand, the pyroclasticfacies were separated according to the pyroclastic currents involved during thedeposition; into fall-out, dilute, and density currents (FA 5, FA 6, and FA 7). Effusiveandesitic feeders and lava-flows (FA 8) were also recognized. The stratigraphic data obtained in the present work allow proposing theexistence of two felsic diatreme volcanoes in the CCHC records - described here asSouthern and Northern Zone-, developed over a local subsided area, represented byan asymmetrical basin.Seven units were recognized and described in the CCHC (Units a, b, c, d, e, f,and g: unit (a) represents an initial stage of continental sedimentation recordedthroughout the entire Complex. Unit (b) represents the upper felsic diatreme facies,in Southern Zone of the Complex, where debris flows are interbedded with massive lapilli-tuff deposits. Unit (c) consists of local andesitic lavas flows and feeder dikes, and the unit (d) consists of welded lapilli tuff deposits interpreted as the growth of thevolcanic system. The Northern Zone evolves similarly with the felsic intra-diatremedeposits of unit (e). The unit (f) consisting of an effusive stage represented byextended andesitic lava flows. Finally, a deep lacustrine system is installed (unit g)that includes shallow and deep facies, with intercalations of local pyroclasticdeposits. Also, new geochronological data (U-Pb zircon age of 188 ± 3 Ma) wasdetermined to confirm and reinforce the correlation criteria between the differentvolcanic areas in Central Patagonia, indicating that the volcanism described here issynchronous with the Northern silica-rich calderas of the Garamilla Formation as wellas the large andesitic volcanoes of the Lonco Trapial Formation located southwardto the CCHC. The regional volcanism changes described, in the present work, areconnected with the N-S rift segment limited by E-W regional transfer fault systemsdeveloped in continuity to the strike-slip structures of the La Esperanza area.Fil: Benedini, Leonardo. The knowledge of the flora existing in the cities is of great importance from the ecological and sustainable point of view, as well as being a premise for actions that provide greater safety, comfort and well-being for the population. The objective of this work was to perform an analysis of the composition, diversity and quality of the tree flora (trees and palms) existing in Rui Barbosa Square, São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo State. This square is considered the main place for its location, history and use, and is located in the central region, next to the Cathedral. The arboreal individuals present in the square were counted, identified and evaluated the height and circumference of the trunk at the height of the chest; were determined phytosociological descriptors, Shannon-Weaver index and observed qualitative aspects (stem-glass balance, general status of the specimen, phytosanity and presence of association with other organisms: insects, lichens, epiphytes or parasites). The floristic composition of Rui Barbosa Square, consisted of 15 botanical families, composed of 25 genera and 28 species, in a total of 103 individuals, among trees and palm trees. The most representative species was Dypsis lutescens, with a frequency of 20.39%. The Shannon-Weaver index, an indicator of diversity, was 2.77, showing that the square presents great floristic diversity. The majority (72.8%) of individuals is in a regular or poor state; 66.02% had some fungus symptoms; 12.62% present problems due to termite attack; mosses, lichens and epiphytes are present in 73.78% of the individuals in the square

Germination response of palm seeds on a two-way thermogradient plate

ABSTRACT Palm trees are propagated almost exclusively by seeds and each species germinates under a certain temperature range. In this sense, the two-way thermogradient plate may be used to determine temperature limits for germination and seed response to temperature. The objective was to define the alternating temperature regime promoting higher and faster seed germination of Carpentaria acuminata and Phoenix canariensis palms using a two-way thermogradient plate. This equipment allowed 64 combinations of alternating and constant temperatures, ranging from 6.97 to 36.42 ºC for C. acuminata, and 7.96 to 35.94 ºC for P. canariensis. Seeds were sown in Petri dishes (25 x 9 cm) containing 1% water agar. Linear regressions were estimated to determine cardinal temperatures. After 50 days, non-germinated seeds were transferred from the two-way thermogradient plate to a germination chamber at 30 °C. The temperature regime promoting highest seed germination percentage of C. acuminata was 30.45/33.00 °C (day/night), with minimum, optimum, and maximum temperatures of 9.13, 28.53, and 36.33 °C, respectively. For seed germination of P. canariensis, the most appropriate temperature regime was 29.77/17.93 °C (day/night), with minimum, optimum, and maximum temperatures of 9.53, 28.03, and 35.43 °C, respectively

The number of obese children and without involvement in regular physical activity as well as the number of adults with chronic diseases continuously increases. It is known that adopting healthy habits in the childhood can stimulate a healthier lifestyle in the adulthood. The change in behaviors in the childhood could contribute to reduce the number of chronic non-transmissible diseases in the adulthood. The purpose of this university community program was to advise and stimulate 130 low income children aged between 13.03±1.08 years old to assume habits and behaviors related to a healthy lifestyle not only regular physical activity, but also information about other healthy factors such as eating habits, photo protection, sleep quality, cognition, respiratory health, posture and heart diseases. After a diagnostic assessment of the children, the program involved educational lectures, practical interventions and blitz when the children performed exams related to different aspects of physical health considered in the program. The activities organized considered the initial screening performed. The diagnostic was that children had very few knowledge on topics related to their health and that they could start to consider some aspects of a healthy lifestyle in their daily routine. In the end of the program, we observed that children and teachers were able to retain a lot of information, which we expect was significant to improve their individual and familiar quality of life. All the activities developed in the program were very welcome by the students and teachers.
