    Lorentz invariance for mixed neutrinos

    We show that a proper field theoretical treatment of mixed (Dirac) neutrinos leads to non-trivial dispersion relations for the flavor states. We analyze such a situation in the framework of the non-linear relativity schemes recently proposed by Magueijo and Smolin. We finally examine the experimental implications of our theoretical proposals by considering the spectrum and the end-point of beta decay in tritium.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures.     Replication stress and chromatin context link ATM activation to a role in DNA replication

    ATM-mediated signaling in response to DNA damage is a barrier to tumorigenesis. Here we asked whether replication stress could also contribute to ATM signaling. We demonstrate that, in the absence of DNA damage, ATM responds to replication stress in a hypoxia-induced heterochromatin-like context. In certain hypoxic conditions, replication stress occurs in the absence of detectable DNA damage. Hypoxia also induces H3K9me3, a histone modification associated with gene repression and heterochromatin. Hypoxia-induced replication stress together with increased H3K9me3 leads to ATM activation. Importantly, ATM prevents the accumulation of DNA damage in hypoxia. Most significantly, we describe a stress-specific role for ATM in maintaining DNA replication rates in a background of increased H3K9me3. Furthermore, the ATM-mediated response to oncogene-induced replication stress is enhanced in hypoxic conditions. Together, these data indicate that hypoxia plays a critical role in the activation of the DNA damage response, therefore contributing to this barrier to tumorigenesis

    Fatigue behaviour of laser repairing welded joints

    This paper presents a fatigue study in Nd-YAG laser surface repairing welded joints in specimens of two base materials used in mould production. The tests were carried out in a servo-hydraulic machine in tension, under constant amplitude loading, with two stress ratios R = 0 and R = 0.4. Welded specimens were prepared with U notches and filled with laser welding deposits. The fatigue results are presented in the form of S-N curves obtained in welded and non-welded conditions. Complementary measurements of hardness and residual stresses profiles were carried out along the surface of laser welded specimens to understand the observed fatigue behaviour. The melted material was the weaker region, with lower values of hardness and higher tensile residual stresses, presenting also a high number of defects that are potential failure sites.     A Kalman filter application to a spectral wave model

    International audienceA sequential time dependent data assimilation scheme based on the Kalman filter is applied to a spectral wave model. Usually, the first guess covariance matrices used in optimal interpolation schemes are exponential spreading functions, which remain constant. In the present work the first guess correlation errors evolve in time according to the dynamic constraints of the wave model. A system error noise is deduced and used to balance numerical errors. The assimilation procedure is tested in a standard situation of swell propagation, where the Kalman filter is used to assimilate the significant wave height. The evolution of the wave field is described by a linear two-dimensional advection equation and the propagation of the error covariance matrix is derived according to Kalman's linear theory. Model simulations were performed in a 2-dimensional domain with deep-water conditions, a relatively small surface area and without wind forcing or dissipation. A true state simulation and a first guess simulation were used to illustrate the assimilation outcome, showing a reasonable performance of the Kalman filter

    Laser-deposit welding, by using Nd-YAG, is a mould repairing process, which has the advantages relatively to the traditional methods of achieving a less change of the metal composition around the repaired zone and permitting a very accurate deposition of a small volume of the filler material in the area chosen at the work-piece surface. This paper presents a fatigue study in specimens of two base materials used in mould production (AISI H13 and P20). Filler material as well as welding parameters were analysed in order to obtain better fatigue strength. The tests were carried out under constant amplitude loading, with two stress ratios R = 0 and R = 0.4. Welded specimens were prepared with V notches and filled with laser welding deposits. The fatigue results are presented in the form of S-N curves obtained in welded and non-welded conditions. Complementary measurements of hardness profiles and SEM analysis were carried out to understanding the fatigue behaviour and failure sites. The laser-deposit material was the weaker region in both steels, due to a high level of tensile residual stresses and also to some planar defects that are potential failure sites. Fatigue crack initiation is therefore reduced and the fatigue propagation life is enhanced.     This work reports experimental data of the speed of sound in liquid 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane (HFC227ea) from 248 K to 333 K and pressures up to 65 MPa, measured with a pulse-echo method. The results are fitted with a rational approximant. Derived thermodynamic properties are calculated, combining our experimental data with density and isobaric heat capacity values published by other authors.
