Preliminary evidence that acute stress moderates basal testosterone's association with retaliatory behavior
A contribution to a special issue on Hormones and Human Competition. Testosterone is theorized to increase retaliation after social provocation. However, empirical evidence in support of these theories is mixed. The present research investigated whether acute stress causally suppresses testosterone's association with retaliation. We also explored sex differences in behavioral responses to acute stress. Thirty-nine participants (51.28% male) were randomly assigned to a high- or low-stress condition. Then participants engaged in 20 one-shot rounds of the ultimatum game, which was used to assess retaliatory behavioral responses to unfair treatment. Participants provided two saliva samples to measure testosterone and cortisol concentrations - one sample before the stress manipulation, and the second after the ultimatum game (20 minutes post-stressor). Results revealed a positive association between basal t estosterone and retaliation in the low-stress condition, but not in the high-stress condition. Further, cortisol concentrations increased in the high- compared to the low-stress condition, and these cortisol changes moderated the association between basal testosterone and retaliation. The associations between basal testosterone and retaliation under varying levels of stress were similar in men and women. However, there was a sex difference in behavioral responses to the stress manipulation that was independent of testosterone. In women, the high-stress condition reduced retaliation compared to the low-stress condition, whereas in men the opposite pattern emerged. Collectively, this study (i) provides preliminary evidence that experimentally manipulated stress blocks basal testosterone's association with retaliation, and (ii) reveals a sex difference in retaliation under varying levels of stress. Discussion focuses on mechanisms, limitations, and the need for follow-up studies with larger sample sizes

Synthesis and application of electrochemically active oligonucleotides
Modified oligonucleotides with redox-active functional groups could emerge as attractive tools for sensor development. In principle, changes in oligonucleotide hybridization or conformation may be read out as a change in an electrochemical signal. Monitoring this signal might allow for a direct interface between biology and electronics. This dissertation describes efforts devoted to creating redox active oligonucleotide derivatives designed to allow these application goals to be pursued. The focus is primarily on the synthesis, characterization, and application of oligonucleotides bearing on of two electroactive moieties, namely ferrocene and methylene blue.
Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of electrochemically modified oligonucleotides and is designed to provide an historical perspective. Synthetic methodology, fabrication of electrode system, and current applications are introduced. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis of a ferrocene-modified oligonucleotide and its use as a multiplexing signal probe. Included in this chapter are syntheses of a ferrocene subunit bearing alkynes, as well as modified nucleoside phosphoramidites and the oligonucleotide syntheses they permit. A synopsis of electrochemical studies are also provided. Chapter 3 describes a ratiometric electrochemical DNA sensor (a so-called E-Sensor) based on the ferrocene-modified oligonucleotide described in Chapter 2 and its used in the detection of specific genes with greatly improved reproducibility. Oligonucleotide syntheses achieved through enzyme ligation, the fabrication of an E-sensor, and the results of electrochemical assays are provided in this chapter. Chapter 4 describes the design and fabrication of possible wearable devices with the modified electrochemically active oligonucleotides toward real diagnostic applications. This work is being done in collaboration with Dr. Nanshu Lu’s group in the Dept. of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin. Chapter 5 the details the synthetic procedures, provides characterization of all new products, and contains electrochemical analytical data discussed in this dissertation.Chemistr
Premelting of Thin Wires
Recent work has raised considerable interest on the nature of thin metallic
wires. We have investigated the melting behavior of thin cylindrical Pb wires
with the axis along a (110) direction, using molecular dynamics and a
well-tested many-body potential. We find that---in analogy with cluster
melting---the melting temperature of a wire with radius is lower
than that of a bulk solid, , by . Surface melting
effects, with formation of a thin skin of highly diffusive atoms at the wire
surface, is observed. The diffusivity is lower where the wire surface has a
flat, local (111) orientation, and higher at (110) and (100) rounded areas. The
possible relevance to recent results on non-rupturing thin necks between an STM

Imaging the dynamical atmosphere of the red supergiant Betelgeuse in the CO first overtone lines with VLTI/AMBER
We present the first 1-D aperture synthesis imaging of the red supergiant
Betelgeuse in the individual CO first overtone lines with VLTI/AMBER. The
reconstructed 1-D projection images reveal that the star appears differently in
the blue wing, line center, and red wing of the individual CO lines. The 1-D
projection images in the blue wing and line center show a pronounced,
asymmetrically extended component up to ~1.3 stellar radii, while those in the
red wing do not show such a component. The observed 1-D projection images in
the lines can be reasonably explained by a model in which the CO gas within a
region more than half as large as the stellar size is moving slightly outward
with 0--5 km s^-1, while the gas in the remaining region is infalling fast with
20--30 km s^-1. A comparison between the CO line AMBER data taken in 2008 and
2009 shows a significant time variation in the dynamics of the CO line-forming
region in the photosphere and the outer atmosphere. In contrast to the line
data, the reconstructed 1-D projection images in the continuum show only a
slight deviation from a uniform disk or limb-darkened disk. We derive a
uniform-disk diameter of 42.05 +/- 0.05 mas and a power-law-type limb-darkened
disk diameter of 42.49 +/- 0.06 mas and a limb-darkening parameter of (9.7 +/-
0.5) x 10^{-2}. This latter angular diameter leads to an effective temperature
of 3690 +/- 54 K for the continuum-forming layer. These diameters confirm that
the near-IR size of Betelgeuse was nearly constant over the last 18 years, in
marked contrast to the recently reported noticeable decrease in the mid-IR
size. The continuum data taken in 2008 and 2009 reveal no or only marginal time
variations, much smaller than the maximum variation predicted by the current

Electronic and structural properties of vacancies on and below the GaP(110) surface
We have performed total-energy density-functional calculations using
first-principles pseudopotentials to determine the atomic and electronic
structure of neutral surface and subsurface vacancies at the GaP(110) surface.
The cation as well as the anion surface vacancy show a pronounced inward
relaxation of the three nearest neighbor atoms towards the vacancy while the
surface point-group symmetry is maintained. For both types of vacancies we find
a singly occupied level at mid gap. Subsurface vacancies below the second layer
display essentially the same properties as bulk defects. Our results for
vacancies in the second layer show features not observed for either surface or
bulk vacancies: Large relaxations occur and both defects are unstable against
the formation of antisite vacancy complexes. Simulating scanning tunneling
microscope pictures of the different vacancies we find excellent agreement with
experimental data for the surface vacancies and predict the signatures of

Resection of the liver for colorectal carcinoma metastases - A multi-institutional study of long-term survivors
In this review of a collected series of patients undergoing hepatic resection for colorectal metastases, 100 patients were found to have survived greater than five years from the time of resection. Of these 100 long-term survivors, 71 remain disease-free through the last follow-up, 19 recurred prior to five years, and ten recurred after five years. Patient characteristics that may have contributed to survival were examined. Procedures performed included five trisegmentectomies, 32 lobectomies, 16 left lateral segmentectomies, and 45 wedge resections. The margin of resection was recorded in 27 patients, one of whom had a positive margin, nine of whom had a less than or equal to 1-cm margin, and 17 of whom had a greater than 1-cm margin. Eighty-one patients had a solitary metastasis to the liver, 11 patients had two metastases, one patient had three metastases, and four patients had four metastases. Thirty patients had Stage C primary carcinoma, 40 had Stage B primary carcinoma, and one had Stage A primarycarcinoma. The disease-free interval from the time of colon resection to the time of liver resection was less than one year in 65 patients, and greater than one year in 34 patients. Three patients had bilobar metastases. Four of the patients had extrahepatic disease resected simultaneously with the liver resection. Though several contraindications to hepatic resection have been proposed in the past, five-year survival has been found in patients with extrahepatic disease resected simultaneously, patients with bilobar metastases, patients with multiple metastases, and patients with positive margins. Five-year disease-free survivors are also present in each of these subsets. It is concluded that five-year survival is possible in the presence of reported contraindications to resection, and therefore that the decision to resect the liver must be individualized. © 1988 American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons
Radiological Decision Aid to determine suitability for medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty: development and preliminary validation
Aims: An evidence-based radiographic Decision Aid for meniscal-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) has been developed and this study investigates its performance at an independent centre. Patients: and Methods Pre-operative radiographs, including stress views, from a consecutive cohort of 550 knees undergoing arthroplasty (UKA or total knee arthroplasty; TKA) by a single-surgeon were assessed. Suitability for UKA was determined using the Decision Aid, with the assessor blinded to treatment received, and compared with actual treatment received, which was determined by an experienced UKA surgeon based on history, examination, radiographic assessment including stress radiographs, and intra-operative assessment in line with the recommended indications as described in the literature. Results: The sensitivity and specificity of the Decision Aid was 92% and 88%, respectively. Excluding knees where a clear pre-operative plan was made to perform TKA, i.e. patient request, the sensitivity was 93% and specificity 96%. The false-positive rate was low (2.4%) with all affected patients readily identifiable during joint inspection at surgery. In patients meeting Decision Aid criteria and receiving UKA, the five-year survival was 99% (95% confidence intervals (CI) 97 to 100). The false negatives (3.5%), who received UKA but did not meet the criteria, had significantly worse functional outcomes (flexion p < 0.001, American Knee Society Score - Functional p < 0.001, University of California Los Angeles score p = 0.04), and lower implant survival of 93.1% (95% CI 77.6 to 100). Conclusion: The radiographic Decision Aid safely and reliably identifies appropriate patients for meniscal-bearing UKA and achieves good results in this population. The widespread use of the Decision Aid should improve the results of UKA
Pulse wave velocity is associated with increased plasma oxLDL in ageing but not with FGF21 and habitual exercise
Fibroblast
growth factor 21 (FGF21) and adiponectin increase expression of genes involved
in antioxidant pathways, but their roles in mediating oxidative stress and
arterial stiffness with ageing and habitual exercise remain unknown. We explored
the role of the FGF21–adiponectin axis in mediating oxidative stress and
arterial stiffness with ageing and habitual exercise. Eighty age- and sex-matched healthy individuals
were assigned to younger
sedentary or active (18–36 years old,n=20
each) and older sedentary or active (45–80 years old,n=20 each) groups. Arterial stiffness was measured indirectly using
pulse wave velocity (PWV). Fasted plasma concentrations of FGF21, adiponectin
and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) were measured. PWV was 0.2-fold
higher and oxLDL concentration was 25.6% higher (both p<0.001) in older than younger adults, despite no difference in
FGF21 concentration (p=0.097) between
age groups. PWV (p=0.09) and oxLDL concentration (p=0.275) did not differ between activity groups but FGF21 concentration was
9% lower in active than sedentary individuals (p=0.011). Adiponectin concentration did not differ by age (p=0.642) or exercise habits (p=0.821). In conclusion, age, but not
habitual exercise, was associated with higher oxidative stress and arterial
stiffness. FGF21 and adiponectin did not differ between younger and older
adults, unlikely mediating oxidative stress and arterial stiffness in healthy
adults. <br
Trends and predictions of metabolic risk factors for acute myocardial infarction: findings from a multiethnic nationwide cohort
BACKGROUND:
Understanding the trajectories of metabolic risk factors for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is necessary for healthcare policymaking. We estimated future projections of the incidence of metabolic diseases in a multi-ethnic population with AMI.
METHODS:
The incidence and mortality contributed by metabolic risk factors in the population with AMI (diabetes mellitus [T2DM], hypertension, hyperlipidemia, overweight/obesity, active/previous smokers) were projected up to year 2050, using linear and Poisson regression models based on the Singapore Myocardial Infarction Registry from 2007 to 2018. Forecast analysis was stratified based on age, sex and ethnicity.
FINDINGS:
From 2025 to 2050, the incidence of AMI is predicted to rise by 194.4% from 482 to 1418 per 100,000 population. The largest percentage increase in metabolic risk factors within the population with AMI is projected to be overweight/obesity (880.0% increase), followed by hypertension (248.7% increase), T2DM (215.7% increase), hyperlipidemia (205.0% increase), and active/previous smoking (164.8% increase). The number of AMI-related deaths is expected to increase by 294.7% in individuals with overweight/obesity, while mortality is predicted to decrease by 11.7% in hyperlipidemia, 29.9% in hypertension, 32.7% in T2DM and 49.6% in active/previous smokers, from 2025 to 2050. Compared with Chinese individuals, Indian and Malay individuals bear a disproportionate burden of overweight/obesity incidence and AMI-related mortality.
INTERPRETATION:
The incidence of AMI is projected to continue rising in the coming decades. Overweight/obesity will emerge as fastest-growing metabolic risk factor and the leading risk factor for AMI-related mortality.
