    Exploring the impact of technological competence development on speed and NPD program performance

    With growing levels of competition across industries, technological competence is increasingly viewed as crucial for businesses to maintain their long-term competitive advantage. Although there are many theoretical arguments about how firms' competences can yield competitive advantage and performance improvement, we have a limited understanding of where the capabilities originate in the context of NPD or what kind of product portfolios, internal climate and strategic alignment are required to build them. Moreover, empirical evidence for technological competence development is limited and comes primarily from case studies, anecdotal evidence, and management impressions. Accordingly, this research addresses these gaps by presenting and testing a conceptual model of technological competence development in NPD. This study makes advances in applying a dynamic capability approach to technological competence development in NPD, and investigates the impact of innovative climate, technological alignment, and project portfolio management on technological competence development as well as NPD speed. Moreover, the factors that might influence NPD program performance are also investigated. The analysis, based on data collected from 164 firms, shows that a firm's innovative climate, technological alignment and portfolio management are positively associated with technological competence development. While technological alignment was found to be negatively related to NPD speed, portfolio management and technological competence development were found to have positive effects on speed. However, innovative climate had no significant impact on speed. Moreover, technological competence development and portfolio management were found to be positively related to NPD program performance. Finally, the authors found no support for the relationship between speed and NPD program performance

    Published ArticleConsiderable interest has been generated globally by researchers regarding the impact of generational differences on employee interaction in the workplace. This is due to the assertion that multicultural environments combined with multigenerational workforces create additional organisational stumbling blocks for global leadership (Roongrerngsuke & Liefooghe, 2013). As such, it is hypothesised that intergenerational conflict in the workplace occurs as a result of differences in terms of values, cognitions and behaviour, with negative consequences for communication, teamwork and ultimately organisational outcomes (Sessa, Kabacoff, Deal & Brown, 2007). Furthermore, a new generation of employees is entering the workplace, with different values and preferences towards work, which influences human resource processes (Latkovikj & Popovska, 2015). Elaborating on the work of D’Amato and Herzfeldt (2008), it is indicated that work motivation and retention concerns are related to generational differences (Seipert & Baghurst, 2014)

    Technical innovation success in China: The use of innovation mechanisms in Chinese SOEs

    Climate for technical innovation has been improving in the past few years in China. This Paper describes a case research related to technical innovation in three Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in the manufacturing industry, by applying a Western technical audit tool. The data and findings reveal that the investigated Chinese SOEs have already some mechanisms for innovation in place but there is room for improvement and enhancement with respect to the effect on innovation success. It is also concluded that benchmarking (through the application of the audit tool) may not guarantee improved innovation performance, but it does guide management toward deciding which innovation mechanisms to adopt so as to provide the basics for innovation success. Last but not least we draw the interesting conclusion that in the economy in transition in China, companies with less openness to the market (i.e. with high government involvement), there was a more widespread use of innovation mechanisms. This finding seems to contradict the positive relationship between market focus and innovativeness as suggested in ‘Western’ innovation management theories, and it enriches to a certain extent the theory of transition

    Influence of Post-Stroke Depression on Functional Independence in Activities of Daily Living

    BACKGROUND: Little attention has been paid to screening of depression among stroke survivors in outpatient physiotherapy clinics. Post-stroke depression is reported to have a negative impact on functional recovery. However, the exact influence on the outcome of rehabilitation such as level of functional independence remains controversial. This study aims at ascertaining the influence of post-stroke depression on functional independence in activities of daily living.METHODS: The study is a cross sectional survey of stroke survivors attending outpatient physiotherapy clinics of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu, and the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH). Participants were evaluated for socio demographic characteristics. Post-stroke depression and level of functional recovery in Activities of Daily Living were assessed using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and the Barthel Index respectively. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 23, with α set at 0.01.RESULTS: A total of 66 participants, 42 females and 24 males, were purposively recruited into the study. Over 80% (56) of the participant had depression, with over 50% (32) being severely depressed. Post-stroke depression was associated with less functional independence in activities of daily living (p=0.000). A significant difference was found in the level of functional independence between participants with and without depression (p=0.00).CONCLUSION: Participants with post-stroke depression have less independence in activities of daily living. A longitudinal study with a larger sample size is, however, recommended so as to improve the external validity. In the mean time, outpatient rehabilitation of depressed stroke survivors should include pharmacological and psychological components.

    Electrochemical Characterization and Electroanalytical Aplications of RGO_AuNPs Hybrids

    A novel synthetic route for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified graphene electrodes has been developed: Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO) sheets are functionalized with pyrene linkers acting as growing sites for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of different dimensions (approximatively 5, 10 and 20 nm). The Au surface is functionalized with oleylamine or 3,4-dimethylbenzenethiol as capping agents. The hybrid material is deposited onto Carbon Screen Printed Electrodes (C-SPEs) for a deep physico-chemical and electrochemical characterization, using Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The role played by every single hybrid counterpart has been investigated, showing a synergistic effect, which is responsible of the enhancement of the system properties. The charge transfer from gold nanoparticles to graphene, assisted and stimulated by the pyrene linker, seems to be the key point to understand the peculiarities of this innovative material. The as prepared RGO-AuNPs hybrids have been used in the electroanalytical detection of both inorganic and organic species (arsenic, H2O2, dopamine), showing promising results in terms of sensitivities and detection limits. In particular, regarding the detection of the neurotransmitter dopamine by means of Differential Pulse Voltammetry in Phosphate Buffer Solution, a LOD of (3.3 \ub1 0.2) ppb has been reached, comparable with other electroanalytical results in the literature and in accordance with the benchmark for this molecule [1]. For arsenic detection, the hybrid devices show increased performances in comparison with bare gold or gold NPs, also allowing speciation between arsenic (III) and (V), appropriately adjusting the experimental conditions. In the case of H2O2, the hybrid devices display high electrocatalytic activity and fast electron-transfer kinetics, representing an ideal platform for developing oxidoreductase-based electrochemical biosensors as well as for detecting H2O2 in real samples.     TiO2 Nanocrystals Decorated CVD Graphene for Electroanalytical Sensing

    In this work, the manufacturing and characterization of an optically transparent and UV-light photoactive anode, formed of monolayer graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and decorated with a close packed multilayered nanostructured layout of colloidal TiO2 nanocrystals (NCs), are reported. The hybrid material has been prepared by a facile solution-based procedure, which relays on soaking the CVD graphene in a solution of 1-pyrene butyric acid (PBA) surface coated TiO2 NCs, achieved upon implementation of a capping exchange process for displacing the pristine organic ligand deriving from the colloidal synthesis. Pyrene undergoes \u3c0-\u3c0 stacking interactions, anchoring the NCs to the platform with retention of the NC geometry and composition. The NCs immobilize onto the graphene platform with preservation of its aromatic structure and the resulting hybrid has been found optically transparent in the visible spectral range. (Photo)electrochemical investigation shows that the composite material has a promising sensitivity for selectively detecting dopamine and norepinephrine and, concomitantly, exhibits a (photo)electric activity higher than that of bare graphene. Thus, the achieved hybrid material results interesting for the manufacturing of photo-active components to integrate in photo-renewable sensor elements along with photodetectors and solar cells
