    Non-Collinear Ferromagnetic Luttinger Liquids

The presence of electron-electron interactions in one dimension profoundly changes the properties of a system. The separation of charge and spin degrees of freedom is just one example. We consider what happens when a system consisting of a ferromagnetic region of non-collinearity, i.e. a domain wall, is coupled to interacting electrons in one-dimension (more specifically a Luttinger liquid). The ferromagnetism breaks spin charge separation and the presence of the domain wall introduces a spin dependent scatterer into the problem. The absence of spin charge separation and the effects of the electron correlations results in very different behaviour for the excitations in the system and for spin-transfer-torque effects in this model.Comment: 6 pages, submitted to Journal of Physics: Conference Series for JEMS 201

Upper bound for the conductivity of nanotube networks

Films composed of nanotube networks have their conductivities regulated by the junction resistances formed between tubes. Conductivity values are enhanced by lower junction resistances but should reach a maximum that is limited by the network morphology. By considering ideal ballistic-like contacts between nanotubes we use the Kubo formalism to calculate the upper bound for the conductivity of such films and show how it depends on the nanotube concentration as well as on their aspect ratio. Highest measured conductivities reported so far are approaching this limiting value, suggesting that further progress lies with nanowires other than nanotubes.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure. Background/Aims: Cronobacter spp. have been identified as being of considerable risk to neonates. The occurrence of organism in infant formulas is therefore of considerable interest. Methods: The occurrence of Cronobacter spp. in infant feeds (formulas and fortified cow’s milk) was determined using most probable number (MPN) analysis, and from formula preparation utensils. Ninety nine samples were analyzed, of which 42 were unopened cans of powdered infant formula (PIF), 25 reconstituted infant formulas in feeding bottles, 27 utensils used from the preparation of infant formula, and 5 samples of fortified cow’s milk. Presumptive Cronobacter spp. isolates were identified using the 7 allele multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme. Results: C. sakazakii, C. malonaticus and C. muytjensii were recovered from PIF. Although the incidence of Cronobacter in PIF was 29% (12/42), the level was low with an average of 0.54 MPN/100g. According to MLST profiling, C. sakazakii was the most frequently isolated Cronobacter species, and C. sakazakii ST4 (associated with neonatal meningitis) was recovered from 2/42 PIF samples at 0.51 and 0.92 MPN/100g. Conclusions: Cronobacter spp. can be isolated from PIF and therefore strict hygienic practices during PIF preparation are important to minimize neonate exposure and reduce the risk of severe infections

Effect of Electrolyte Balance in Low-Protein Diets on Broiler Performance and Tibial Dyschondroplasia Incidence

A proper dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) is essential to ensure an optimum acid-base equilibrium and broiler performance. In low-CP diets, this balance can be affected by reduction of soybean meal and inclusion of high levels of synthetic amino acids. Although, some studies have related low-protein diets supplemented with amino acids and DEB, these relations are not well explained, because some research demonstrates confusion about the deficiency and balance of nutrients. The objective of these experiments was to evaluate the DEB effects of diets with low levels of protein supplemented with amino acids on broiler performance and bone development. Results indicated that DEB and CP content influenced broiler chick performance in the starter and growing periods. There was no significant effect due to the interaction between DEB and CP content for tibial dyschondroplasia incidence (TD) or in bone breaking resistance during the growing period of either experiment. The incidence of TD was reduced with 253 mEq/kg DEB in the starter period

Trajectories of sleep quality during the first three years after breast cancer diagnosis

Objective: To identify trajectories of sleep quality up to three years after breast cancer diagnosis and to assess differences in characteristics of patients across distinct trajectories. Methods: A total of 458 breast cancer patients underwent a neurological evaluation before treatment and at one and three years after diagnosis. Clinical data were obtained throughout the follow-up. Anxiety and depression were evaluated at baseline, using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. In all sessions of follow-up, sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Model-based clustering was used to identify groups of patients with homogeneous variation in sleep quality. Results: We identified three trajectories of variation in sleep quality, named “low” (LSQ), “medium” (MSQ), and “high sleep quality” (HSQ). Women in the HSQ trajectory presented good sleep quality during the three years. LSQ and MSQ trajectories were characterized by poor sleep quality during the whole period, although during the first year the latter depicted a significant deterioration of sleep quality and the former a significant improvement. Patients included in the LSQ trajectory were more likely to have clinically significant anxiety and depression at baseline. The two trajectories with worse sleep quality were associated with neuropathic pain three years after cancer diagnosis. Conclusions: This study provides a model for describing the variation in sleep quality during the first three years after breast cancer diagnosis, based on three main trajectories. Further studies are needed understanding the heterogeneity of the individual trajectories within each of these major patterns of variation. This study was funded by FEDER through the Operational Programme Competitiveness and Internationalization (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016867) and national funding from the Foundation for Science and Technology – FCT (Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education) (PTDC/DTP-EPI/7283/2014) under the Unidade de Investigação em Epidemiologia - Instituto de Saúde Pública da Universidade do Porto (EPIUnit) (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006862; Ref.UID/DTP/04750/2013); the PhD Grant SFRH/BD/92630/2013 (Filipa Fontes) co-funded by the FCT and the POPH/FSE Program. The application of trialkyloxonium tetrafluoroborates for N-alkylation of the nonnatural amino acid Cα, α-dimethylglycine is described. Several methyl esters of dimethylglycine protected with different amine protecting groups were subject to N-ethylation or N-methylation with triethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate or trimethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate, respectively. The corresponding N-akyl-Cα, α-dimethylglycine derivatives were obtained in good to high yields. Removal of the methyl ester rendered amino acid derivatives ready for application in peptide synthesis.Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) – Portugal and Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER) for financial support to Chemistry Centre of University of Minho.
