Fish assemblages as biological indicators of ecological quality in portuguese rivers
vista à sua conservação e reabilitação; ABSTRACT:Under the implementation of the Water Framework Directive fish fauna is considered a useful
biological element. For the first time a Portuguese classification system to assess the ecological
status of aquatic ecosystems was established, despite several constrains posed by the variety
and ubiquity of human pressures and by the peculiarities of the fish assemblages. It was possible
to define fish-based geographical groups for the subsequent establishment of a national river
typology, to select metrics responsive to human pressures and to develop a fish biotic index.
Results underline the needs for accurately differentiate between fish responses to natural and
anthropogenic disturbances by accounting for the spatial and temporal variability of fish
assemblages. Land use may lead to strong impacts on stream degradation and fish assemblages
integrity and this evaluation must consider the interaction of different pressures. Understanding
the influence of environmental and human factors in the occurrence and abundance of non-native
species enlightened their role as a reliable tool in the ecological assessment of rivers. This thesis
represents an important contribution to improve the ecological assessment tools in Portugal,
while increasing knowledge on the ecology of fish communities and ecosystem functioning in
Mediterranean climate rivers in view of their urgent conservation
Previous studies have shown that public service motivation (PSM), a specific type of motivation to do good towards others and the society, influences the individual performance of public employees.
The present research analyzed the influence relationship between the PSM of portuguese Public Administration (PA) employees and their Perceived Individual Performance, as well as the existence of differences in PSM and Perceived Individual Performance between workers integrated in the special career of inspection and in the general career of superior technician and assessed the extent to which the relationship between PSM and Perceived Individual Performance is moderated by those careers.
This is a hypothetical-deductive study of a quantitative nature, using a questionnaire distributed to portuguese PA organizations (non-probabilistic sampling). A sample of 129 responses was collected and analysed.
The results have shown that, in general, there are no differences in PSM and Perceived Individual Performance between inspectors and superior technicians. It was also shown that the PSM, measured by three dimensions – Social Justice, Social Egoism (reversed) and Social Cynicism (reversed) -, is a predictor of Perceived Individual Performance, explaining 56,7% of its variance. Specifically, the following coefficients of determination (R2) for the explanatory model of PSM on the Perceived Individual Performance were found: 0.204 (Contextual Performance), 0.096 (Task Performance) and 0.267 (Counterproductive Work Behavior [CWB; reversed]). Contrary to expectations, the estimated model suggests that the Social Justice dimension has a positive relationship with the negative dimension of Perceived Individual Performance, CWB. This result suggests the possibility that other not studied variables, such as organizational context or external environment, may influence the relationship between these factors. Additionally, it was found that the careers of inspection and superior technician do not moderate the relationship between the workers’ PSM and Perceived Individual Performance. The theoretical implications of the study are discussed, as well as suggestions
for future investigations.N/

Interactions of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus in biofilm-related infections: insights through network reconstruction and creation of a new online database
Introduction: Despite important advances in biofilm research, these consortia remain a critical concern for many biomedical applications. Their naturally occurring polymicrobial nature is characterised by the development of complex communities, where pathogen interactions can promote disease progression and severity. Intra- and inter-species communication within these consortia is majorly regulated by quorum-sensing, affecting the expression of virulence factors and biofilm formation, making it a promising target for new anti-infective strategies. P. aeruginosa and S. aureus are two major pathogens that co-occur in many biofilm-related infections and whose competitive interaction is highly related to infection resilience.
Hypothesis and aims: Information on P. aeruginosa-S. aureus interactions is currently scattered in the ever-growing scientific literature, making it difficult for researchers to grasp critical information. Therefore, this study aimed at systematically collecting and analysing experimental information presented in the biomedical literature on the molecular basis of P. aeruginosa-S. aureus interactions, identifying promising therapeutic targets, and making this data available to the research community.
Methodology: Full-text papers were optimally retrieved from PubMed and classified by their relevance. Interaction data was methodically annotated, reconstructed as networks to identify promising therapeutic targets, and integrated with specialized databases to identify promising antimicrobials. A new online database was created to deposit the gathered interaction data in searchable format.
Results: Network analysis revealed key entities regulating P. aeruginosa-S. aureus interactions, for instance the PqsABCDE/PqsR quorum-sensing system, which affects S. aureus growth and biofilm formation. By identifying the most reported P. aeruginosa virulence factors affecting S. aureus, e.g. HQNO and siderophores, a list of experimentally validated agents affecting those factors, ranging from synthetic drugs to natural plant extracts, was constructed.
Conclusion: The complex experimental data on P. aeruginosa-S. aureus interactions was for the first time thoroughly retrieved, systematized, and made publically available in the new Inter-Species CrossTalk Database (www.ceb.uminho.pt/ISCTD).Portuguese

GeoloGIS-BH: An Information System for Using the Built Heritage for Geological Teaching
There are examples of using stones of the cultural heritage for teaching purposes. Information systems have found several potential uses in the promotion and preservation of cultural heritage. In this paper is considered the conceptual framework of an information system concerning features of geological interest (FGI) in the built heritage (without any consideration in terms of its software implementation). This FGI concept is used here in a very wide sense to encompass characteristics of geological materials that can be recognized with the naked eye and analogies of geological processes in the built environment. Two perspectives are considered for information organization: occurrences of FGIs in the built heritage (more suitable for Earth Sciences teaching) and FGIs as components of built heritage elements (more suitable for humanities teaching). The main issue that arises from the ensuing discussion was found to be the findability of a given FGI, depending on its visual contrast and the characteristics of the built heritage element. It is argued that, in this way, geological concepts can contribute to the promotion and conservation of the built heritageThis work is included in the activities of the project Lab2PT - Landscapes, Heritage and Territory laboratory - AUR/04509, which has financial support of the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia through national funds and when applicable of the FEDER co-financing, in the aim of the new partnership agreement PT2020 and COMPETE2020 - POCI 01 0145 FEDER 007528.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
As medições realizadas permitem a
Starting from the identification of several problems with production processes of Social Diagnostics under the Social Network, the study highlights the fragility and inconsistency of information systems related to the design of social policies and programs of action at local level. Following the direction proposed by the methodological guidance of research-action presented at first, then tries to understand the context in which falls the Social Network program, proceeding to a brief review on the theoretical concept of social policy and the role of the state over time, concluding with the notion of territory as the new paradigm of social intervention at present. Thirdly, on the assumption of Social Development Territorial matrix of social intervention as a local study, were analysed the mechanisms of production of Social Diagnostics in the Great Lisbon area and presented the results of the study conducted by the team involved. With the Intermunicipal Task Team involved a process of reflection is developed on the results and an attempt to incorporate this thinking in changing professional practice and the nature of social intervention itself, contributions are defined to the design of an information system that best suits and meets the needs identified at the production of diagnostic units each time that a professional, a leader or a policy maker has to make decisions in the definition of social policy measures and intervention programs at the local level
Antimicrobial peptide combinations against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus
Today, we are facing a major challenge regarding the development of new strategies and the discovery of new compounds with effective antimicrobial outcomes. The emergence of resistance is a preoccupant health threat and conventional antibiotics are being rendered ineffective. Researchers are now focusing in alternatives, such as the discovery of new antimicrobials with different modes of action, and the combination of agents potentiating their efficacy. AMPs are an example of new antimicrobials with promising applications, since they have different and sometimes unspecific mechanisms of action compared to traditional antibiotics, reducing the chance of acquired resistance.
This work analyses AMP combinations against major pathogenic bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, currently great contributors for resistance development and responsible for chronic infections, such as cystic fibrosis pneumonia. We present a screening of combinations of colistin with temporin A, citropin 1.1, tachyplesin I, lactoferricin B, magainin II and G10KHc, against these pathogens, including references and clinical isolate strains. Results show that most combinations have synergetic activities, which means that AMP combinations should be a viable way for the development of new antimicrobial treatments, thus reducing their toxicity and side effects, while maintaining efficacy.
Some of the best combinations will be tested on biofilms of these bacteria, in order to test their prophylactic and therapeutic action against this different and more resilient mode of growth
The Impact of Environmental Stresses in the Virulence Traits of Listeria monocytogenes Relevant to Food Safety
Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen, which causes listeriosis disease among humans and other animal species. Infections in humans mainly occur in immunocompromised individuals and are caused by the consumption of ready-to-eat and raw food products contaminated with the pathogen. To ensure survival in nature, L. monocytogenes easily adapts to different environmental conditions, and that justifies the hurdles to prevent bacterial growth inside the food chain. Exposure to a single or multiple sublethal stresses, as those impaired by food processing, food matrices, and the gastrointestinal tract, can enhance tolerance of L. monocytogenes to stresses and increase its survival and pathogenesis. This chapter summarizes the current information on the adaptive response of L. monocytogenes to different stresses, namely (1) cold stress, (2) acid stress, (3) osmotic stress, (4) desiccation stress, and (5) high hydrostatic pressure, and the impact of these stresses on L. monocytogenes virulence. The objective is to provide the background information that is necessary for the development of scientifically sound control strategies to improve food safety and to reduce the uncertainty of microbial risk assessments, associated to limited knowledge on the behavior of cells capable to adapt and survive stresses
