    O presente trabalho possui como objeto o estudo, utilizando pesquisas bibliográficas, da nova técnica de julgamento estendido prevista no artigo 942 do Código de Processo Civil de 2015 e sua relação com os precedentes judiais, a fim de promover a segurança e a celeridade processual. Logo após a introdução o trabalho apresenta noções gerais a respeito da técnica de julgamento estendido. Num segundo momento o foco se volta para os princípios da segurança jurídica e celeridade processual. Por fim, o último capítulo se presta a apontar as implicações da técnica de julgamento estendido na promoção da uniformização da jurisprudência e, consequentemente, da segurança jurídica e celeridade.     A Comprehensive Societal Energy Return on Investment Study of Portugal Reveals a Low but Stable Value

    Energy return on investment (EROI) is a ratio of the energy obtained in relation to the energy used to extract/produce it. The EROI of fossil fuels is globally decreasing. What do the declining EROIs of energy sources imply for society as a whole? We answer this question by proposing a novel EROI measure that describes, through one parameter, the efficiency of a society in managing energy resources over time. Our comprehensive societal EROI measure was developed by (1) expanding the boundaries of the analysis up to the useful stage; (2) estimating the amount of energy embodied in the energy-converting capital; (3) considering non-conventional sources such as the muscle work of humans and draught animals; and (4) considering the influence of imported and exported energy. We computed the new EROI for Portugal as a case study. We find a considerably lower EROI value, at around 3, compared to those currently available, which is stable over a long-time range (1960–2014). This suggests an independence of EROI from economic growth. When estimated at the final stage, using conventional methods (i.e., without applying the four novelties here introduced), we find a declining societal EROI. Therefore, our results imply that the production of new and more efficient final-to-useful energy converting capital has historically kept societal EROI around a stable value by offsetting the effects of the changing returns of energy sources at the primary and final stages.     Transport coefficients for inelastic Maxwell mixtures

    The Boltzmann equation for inelastic Maxwell models is used to determine the Navier-Stokes transport coefficients of a granular binary mixture in dd dimensions. The Chapman-Enskog method is applied to solve the Boltzmann equation for states near the (local) homogeneous cooling state. The mass, heat, and momentum fluxes are obtained to first order in the spatial gradients of the hydrodynamic fields, and the corresponding transport coefficients are identified. There are seven relevant transport coefficients: the mutual diffusion, the pressure diffusion, the thermal diffusion, the shear viscosity, the Dufour coefficient, the pressure energy coefficient, and the thermal conductivity. All these coefficients are {\em exactly} obtained in terms of the coefficients of restitution and the ratios of mass, concentration, and particle sizes. The results are compared with known transport coefficients of inelastic hard spheres obtained analytically in the leading Sonine approximation and by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The comparison shows a reasonably good agreement between both interaction models for not too strong dissipation, especially in the case of the transport coefficients associated with the mass flux.Comment: 9 figures, to be published in J.     Ethylene carbonate adsorption on the major surfaces of lithium manganese oxide Li1−xMn2O4 spinel (0.000 < x < 0.375): a DFT+U-D3 study

    Understanding the surface reactivity of the commercial cathode material LiMn2O4 towards the electrolyte is important to improve the cycling performance of secondary lithium-ion batteries and to prevent manganese dissolution. In this work, we have employed spin-polarized density functional theory calculations with on-site Coulomb interactions and long-range dispersion corrections [DFT+U-D3-(BJ)] to investigate the adsorption of the electrolyte component ethylene carbonate (EC) onto the (001), (011) and (111) surfaces of the fully lithiated and partially delithiated Li1−xMn2O4 spinel (0.000 < x < 0.375). The surface interactions were investigated by evaluating the adsorption energies of the EC molecule and the surface free energies. Furthermore, we analyzed the impact of EC adsorption on the Wulff crystal morphologies, the molecular vibrational frequencies and the adsorbate/surface charge transfers. The adsorption energies indicate that the EC molecule strongly adsorbs on the (111) facet, which is attributed to a bidentate binding configuration. We found that EC adsorption enhances the stability of the (111) facet, as shown by the Wulff crystal morphologies. Although a negligible charge transfer was calculated between the spinel surfaces and the EC molecule, a large charge rearrangement takes place within the surfactant upon adsorption. The wavenumbers of the C[double bond, length as m-dash]O stretching mode for the interacting EC molecule are red-shifted with respect to the isolated adsorbate, suggesting that this bond becomes weaker. The surface free energies show that both the fully lithiated and partially delithiated forms of the LiMn2O4 surfaces are stabilized by the EC molecule

    Clinical use of HIV integrase inhibitors : a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Background: Optimal regimen choice of antiretroviral therapy is essential to achieve long-term clinical success. Integrase inhibitors have swiftly been adopted as part of current antiretroviral regimens. The purpose of this study was to review the evidence for integrase inhibitor use in clinical settings. Methods: MEDLINE and Web-of-Science were screened from April 2006 until November 2012, as were hand-searched scientific meeting proceedings. Multiple reviewers independently screened 1323 citations in duplicate to identify randomized controlled trials, nonrandomized controlled trials and cohort studies on integrase inhibitor use in clinical practice. Independent, duplicate data extraction and quality assessment were conducted. Results: 48 unique studies were included on the use of integrase inhibitors in antiretroviral therapy-naive patients and treatment-experienced patients with either virological failure or switching to integrase inhibitors while virologically suppressed. On the selected studies with comparable outcome measures and indication (n = 16), a meta-analysis was performed based on modified intention-to-treat (mITT), on-treatment (OT) and as-treated (AT) virological outcome data. In therapy-naive patients, favorable odds ratios (OR) for integrase inhibitor-based regimens were observed, (mITT OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.59-0.86). However, integrase inhibitors combined with protease inhibitors only did not result in a significant better virological outcome. Evidence further supported integrase inhibitor use following virological failure (mITT OR 0.27; 95% CI 0.11-0.66), but switching to integrase inhibitors from a high genetic barrier drug during successful treatment was not supported (mITT OR 1.43; 95% CI 0.89-2.31). Integrase inhibitor-based regimens result in similar immunological responses compared to other regimens. A low genetic barrier to drug-resistance development was observed for raltegravir and elvitegravir, but not for dolutegravir. Conclusion: In first-line therapy, integrase inhibitors are superior to other regimens. Integrase inhibitor use after virological failure is supported as well by the meta-analysis. Careful use is however warranted when replacing a high genetic barrier drug in treatment-experienced patients switching successful treatment
