Three new aflatoxigenic species of Aspergillus section Flavi isolated in Portugal
PosterThree new aflatoxin-producing species isolated from two Portuguese commodities, almonds and maize, are described. A polyphasic approach based on phenotypic (morphology and extrolites) and molecular characterizations was used to identify these isolates as belonging to new species. From the study of the twenty two isolates obtained in maize and almonds, two were identified as Aspergillus flavus, six as A. minisclerotigenes and four as A. parasiticus. Examination of morphological characters combined with the analyses of aflatoxins and CPA production and molecular data revealed that ten of the Aspergillus section Flavi strains that were isolated do not match that of described species of the section. The multilocus analyses were performed using different primers for DNA regions. Molecular characterization showed that A. mottae, A. sergii and A. transmontanensis are well supported by phylogenetic analyses of the combined data. Aspergillus transmontanensis and A. sergii are phylogenetically related to A. parasiticus. Aspergillus mottae is phylogenetically ancestral to A. flavus and A. parasiticus. Therefore three new species are proposed Aspergillus mottae, Aspergillus sergii and Aspergillus transmontanensis.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
High-Protein Diet Associated with Resistance Training Improves Performance and Decreases Adipose Index in Rats
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(2): 1366-1381, 2020. The study tested the hypothesis that a high protein diet based on isolated whey protein (IWP) associated with strength training improves performance and reduces body fat without promoting health damage. Male Wistar rats, 45 days old, were divided into four groups (n = 8 / group): normoprotein sedentary (IWP 14%; NS); hyperprotein sedentary (IWP 35%; HS); normoprotein trained (IWP 14%; NT) and hyperprotein trained (IWP 35%; HT). All groups performed the maximum load test at the beginning and after the vertical ladder training protocol for 6 weeks (3x/week). The performance improved in HT when compared to other groups. There was no difference in the plasma levels of testosterone, IGF-1 and the hematological parameters remained normal. The relative weights of the kidneys were higher in the groups fed with high protein; the liver was higher in HT compared to NS and NT, and the heart was higher in HS compared to NS and NT. Concerning relative muscle weight, quadriceps, and gastrocnemius, HT showed higher value compared to NT. Diet containing 35% isolate whey protein associated with resistance training improved performance as well as increased muscles and organs weight of the animals, without damaging the tissues related to protein metabolism (confirmed by unchanged hematological parameters), which may minimize the risk of developing cardiometabolic disorders
The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Extragalactic Sources at 148 GHz in the 2008 Survey
We report on extragalactic sources detected in a 455 square-degree map of the
southern sky made with data at a frequency of 148 GHz from the Atacama
Cosmology Telescope 2008 observing season. We provide a catalog of 157 sources
with flux densities spanning two orders of magnitude: from 15 to 1500 mJy.
Comparison to other catalogs shows that 98% of the ACT detections correspond to
sources detected at lower radio frequencies. Three of the sources appear to be
associated with the brightest cluster galaxies of low redshift X-ray selected
galaxy clusters. Estimates of the radio to mm-wave spectral indices and
differential counts of the sources further bolster the hypothesis that they are
nearly all radio sources, and that their emission is not dominated by
re-emission from warm dust. In a bright (>50 mJy) 148 GHz-selected sample with
complete cross-identifications from the Australia Telescope 20 GHz survey, we
observe an average steepening of the spectra between 5, 20, and 148 GHz with
median spectral indices of , , and . When the
measured spectral indices are taken into account, the 148 GHz differential
source counts are consistent with previous measurements at 30 GHz in the
context of a source count model dominated by radio sources. Extrapolating with
an appropriately rescaled model for the radio source counts, the Poisson
contribution to the spatial power spectrum from synchrotron-dominated sources
with flux density less than 20 mJy is C^{\rm Sync} = (2.8 \pm 0.3) \times
10^{-6} \micro\kelvin^2.Comment: Accepted to Ap
Construction and validation of an developmental profile assessment tool for children with autistic spectrum disorder
During the last few years, research has focused on changes in Sensory Processing in children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As a result, literature has shown that between 42% and 88% of children with ASD present this type of disorder.
Based on these findings, a research project was designed centring on the construction of a tool to assess the traditional triad that characterizes children with ASD (Interaction, Communication and Behaviour and Repetitive and Stereotyped Interests), to which was added a new domain: Sensory Processing. By constructing and validating this assessment tool, the intention is for parents and professionals to collaboratively apply this intervention assessment instrument in order to monitor the support process and adapt
their practices. In this paper, we describe procedures and results of the successive stages entailed in constructing this instrument,
from the first primarily qualitative analyses up to the studies centred on the quantitative item analysis.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT)ABPEE - Associação Brasileira de Pesquisadores em Educação EspecialConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)CAPESMinistério da Educação - BrasilMinistério da Ciência e da Tecnologia - BrasilGoverno Federal - Brasi
Differential Temporal Dynamics of Axial and Appendicular Ataxia in SCA3
Background: Disease severity in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is commonly defined by the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) sum score, but little is known about the contributions and progression patterns of individual items.
Objectives: To investigate the temporal dynamics of SARA item scores in SCA3 patients and evaluate if clinical and demographic factors are differentially associated with evolution of axial and appendicular ataxia.
Methods: In a prospective, multinational cohort study involving 11 European and 2 US sites, SARA scores were determined longitudinally in 223 SCA3 patients with a follow-up assessment after 1 year.
Results: An increase in SARA score from 10 to 20 points was mainly driven by axial and speech items, with a markedly smaller contribution of appendicular items. Finger chase and nose-finger test scores not only showed the lowest variability at baseline, but also the least deterioration at follow-up. Compared with the full set of SARA items, omission of both tests would result in lower sample size requirements for therapeutic trials. Sex was associated with change in SARA sum score and appendicular, but not axial, subscore, with a significantly faster progression in men. Despite considerable interindividual variability, the average annual progression rate of SARA score was approximately three times higher in subjects with a disease duration over 10 years than in those within 10 years from onset.
Conclusion: Our findings provide evidence for a difference in temporal dynamics between axial and appendicular ataxia in SCA3 patients, which will help inform the design of clinical trials and development of new (etiology-specific) outcome measures. © 2022 The Authors.
