Participatory design, beyond the local
This workshop aims at stimulating and opening a debate around the capacity of Participatory Design (PD) and other co-design approaches to deliver outcomes and methodologies that can have an impact and value for reuse well beyond the local context in which they were originally developed. This will be achieved by stimulating the submission of position papers by researchers from the PD community and beyond.These papers will be discussed during the workshop in order to identify challenges, obstacles but also potentials for scaling up PD processes and results from the local to the global.</p
Comparison of upper body strength gains between men and women after 10 weeks of resistance training
Resistance training (RT) offers benefits to both men and women. However, the studies about the differences between men and women in response to an RT program are not conclusive and few data are available about upper body strength response. The aim of this study was to compare elbow flexor strength gains in men and women after 10 weeks of RT. Forty-four college-aged men (22.63 +/- 2.34 years) and forty-seven college-aged women (21.62 +/- 2.96 years) participated in the study. The RT program was performed two days a week for 10 weeks. Before and after the training period, peak torque (PT) of the elbow flexors was measured with an isokinetic dynamometer. PT values were higher in men in comparison to women in pre-and post-tests (p 0.05). Effect sizes were 0.57 and 0.56 for men and women, respectively. In conclusion, the present study suggests that men and women have a similar upper body strength response to RT
An alien invader is the cause of homogenization in the recipient ecosystem: a simulation-like approach.
Biotic homogenization is an expected effect of biological invasions. Invasive alien species
typically show great adaptability to a wide range of environmental conditions and may expand into
different habitats, thus reducing the dissimilarity among the recipient communities. We tested this
assumption by analyzing a comprehensive database (78 species x 229 samples) collected between
2012 and 2017 in the marine protected area of Portofino (NW Italy), where Caulerpa cylindracea, one
of the worst invaders in the Mediterranean Sea, exhibits high substratum cover at depths between
1 m and 45 m in 14 different communities (identified according to the European Nature Information
System EUNIS for habitat classification). Five samples for each of the eight depth zones (i.e., 5 m,
10 m, 15 m, 20 m, 25 m, 30 m, 35 m, and 40 m) were randomly re-sampled from the comprehensive
database to produce a dataset of 67 species x 40 samples. Then, a second dataset of 66 species x
40 samples was simulated by excluding Caulerpa cylindracea. Both re-sampled datasets underwent
multivariate analysis. In the presence of C. cylindracea, the overall similarity among samples was
higher, thus indicating homogenization of the rocky reef communities of Portofino Marine Protected
Area. Continued monitoring activity is needed to understand and assess the pattern and extent of
C. cylindracea\u2019s inclusion in the recipient ecosystems
Web conversations about complementary and alternative medicines and cancer: Content and sentiment analysis
Background: The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) among cancer patients is widespread and mostly self-administrated. Today, one of the most relevant topics is the nondisclosure of CAM use to doctors. This general lack of communication exposes patients to dangerous behaviors and to less reliable information channels, such as the Web. The Italian context scarcely differs from this trend. Today, we are able to mine and analyze systematically the unstructured information available in the Web, to get an insight of people's opinions, beliefs, and rumors concerning health topics. Objective: Our aim was to analyze Italian Web conversations about CAM, identifying the most relevant Web sources, therapies, and diseases and measure the related sentiment. Methods: Data have been collected using the Web Intelligence tool ifMONITOR. The workflow consisted of 6 phases: (1) eligibility criteria definition for the ifMONITOR search profile; (2) creation of a CAM terminology database; (3) generic Web search and automatic filtering, the results have been manually revised to refine the search profile, and stored in the ifMONITOR database; (4) automatic classification using the CAM database terms; (5) selection of the final sample and manual sentiment analysis using a 1-5 score range; (6) manual indexing of the Web sources and CAM therapies type retrieved. Descriptive univariate statistics were computed for each item: absolute frequency, percentage, central tendency (mean sentiment score [MSS]), and variability (standard variation Ò). Results: Overall, 212 Web sources, 423 Web documents, and 868 opinions have been retrieved. The overall sentiment measured tends to a good score (3.6 of 5). Quite a high polarization in the opinions of the conversation partaking emerged from standard variation analysis (δ≥1). In total, 126 of 212 (59.4%) Web sources retrieved were nonhealth-related. Facebook (89; 21%) and Yahoo Answers (41; 9.7%) were the most relevant. In total, 94 CAM therapies have been retrieved. Most belong to the "biologically based therapies or nutrition" category: 339 of 868 opinions (39.1%), showing an MSS of 3.9 (δ=0.83). Within nutrition, "diets" collected 154 opinions (18.4%) with an MSS of 3.8 (δ=0.87); "food as CAM" overall collected 112 opinions (12.8%) with a MSS of 4 (δ=0.68). Excluding diets and food, the most discussed CAM therapy is the controversial Italian "Di Bella multitherapy" with 102 opinions (11.8%) with an MSS of 3.4 (δ=1.21). Breast cancer was the most mentioned disease: 81 opinions of 868. Conclusions: Conversations about CAM and cancer are ubiquitous. There is a great concern about the biologically based therapies, perceived as harmless and useful, under-rating all risks related to dangerous interactions or malnutrition. Our results can be useful to doctors to be aware of the implications of these beliefs for the clinical practice. Web conversation exploitation could be a strategy to gain insights of people's perspective for other controversial topics
Use of ecological indices to assess the health status of Posidonia oceanica meadows in Eastern Liguria.
Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile is an endemic Mediterranean seagrass and a key species of coastal
marine ecosystems listed among the priority habitats in the European Directive 92/43 / EEC.
P. oceanica is a good biological indicator to define the quality of coastal marine ecosystem,
because its high sensitivity to environmental conditions changes. The aim of this study is 1) to
investigate if the health status of some P.oceanica meadows located in different sites influences
the ability of the system to stock natural capital and 2) to quantify changes in natural capital
value in both biophysical and monetary terms. Health status of five different meadows along
Liguria coast was evaluated by means of different indicators such as: Conservation Index,
Substitution Index, Phase Shift Index and Posidonia Rapid Easy Index. Natural capital has been
assessed through emergy analysis, a biophysical approach able to account the resources directly
and indirectly used up to reach a certain product or mantain a system. Results showed that
healthier meadows are located in marine protected areas or far from main sources of anthropic
pressures and that higher values of natural capital is stored in healthy seagrass
The Rarita-Schwinger Particles Under de Influence of Strong Magnetic Fields
In this work, we calculate the solutions of the Rarita-Schwinger equation
with the inclusion of the eletromagnetic interaction. Our gauge and coupling
prescription choices lead to Dirac-type solutions. One of the consequences of
our results are the Landau level occupation of particles, quite different from
the usual spin 1/2 particle system occupation numbers.Comment: 12 page
Dual targeting of ptp1b and aldose reductase with marine drug phosphoeleganin: A promising strategy for treatment of type 2 diabetes
An in-depth study on the inhibitory mechanism on protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) and aldose reductase (AR) enzymes, including analysis of the insulin signalling pathway, of phosphoeleganin, a marine-derived phosphorylated polyketide, was achieved. Phosphoeleganin was demonstrated to inhibit both enzymes, acting respectively as a pure non-competitive inhibitor of PTP1B and a mixed-type inhibitor of AR. In addition, in silico docking analyses to evaluate the interaction mode of phosphoeleganin with both enzymes were performed. Interestingly, this study showed that phosphoeleganin is the first example of a dual inhibitor polyketide extracted from a marine invertebrate, and it could be used as a versatile scaffold structure for the synthesis of new designed multiple ligands
Study on a fermented whole wheat: Phenolic content, activity on PTP1B enzyme and in vitro prebiotic properties
Fermented cereals, staple foods in Asia and Africa, are recently receiving a growing interest in Western countries. The object of this work is the characterization of a fermented wheat used as a food ingredient and dietary supplement. To this aim, the phenolic composition, the activity on protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), an enzyme overexpressed in type-II diabetes, the in vitro prebiotic properties on Lactobacillus reuteri and the microbial composition were investigated. Basic and acidic hydrolysis were tested for an exhaustive recovery of bound phenols: the acidic hydrolysis gave best yields. Methyl ferulate and neocarlinoside were identified for the first time in wheat. The inhibitory power of the extracts of several batches were investigated on PTP1B enzyme. The product was not able to inhibit the enzyme, otherwise, for the first time, a complete inhibition was observed for schaftoside, a major C-flavonoid of wheat. The microbial composition was assessed identifying Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Pediococcus as the main bacterial species. The fermented wheat was a suitable substrate for the grown of L. reuteri, recognized for its health properties in the human gut. The proposed method for phenols is easier compared to those based on strong basic hydrolysis; our results assessed the bound phenols as the major fraction, differently from that suggested by the literature for fermented cereals
