    Recruitment and baseline characteristics of the Community of Voices choir study to promote the health and well-being of diverse older adults.

    Objective:To describe the recruitment and baseline results of the Community of Voices study that aims to examine the effect of a community choir intervention on the health and well-being of older adults from diverse racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Method:Using community-based participatory research methods, we recruited adults age 60 and over from 12 Administration on Aging-supported senior centers in San Francisco into a 2-arm cluster-randomized controlled trial of the community choir intervention. Multiple outreach methods were used. We tracked outreach, screening, and recruitment metrics and collected demographics and baseline outcomes via community-based, interviewer-administered surveys and performance measures of cognition, physical function, and psychosocial variables. Results:The study contacted 819 individuals, screened 636, and enrolled 390 diverse older adults over a 42-month, phased recruitment period. The mean age was 71.2 (SD = 7.3), and the majority were women. Two-thirds of the sample are non-white, and 20% of participants reported having financial hardship. Discussion:Outreach and recruitment methods used in the Community of Voices trial facilitated enrollment of a large proportion of minority and lower-SES older adults in the final sample. Similar recruitment approaches could serve as a model for recruiting diverse racial/ethnic and socioeconomic older adults into research

    Improvement of quality of life in patients with concomitant allergic asthma and atopic dermatitis: one year follow-up of omalizumab therapy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>Anti IgE treatment with omalizumab is efficacious in the treatment of patients suffering from allergic asthma, improving asthma control and improving quality of life. Furthermore, this approach could be beneficial for patients with concomitant atopic dermatitis. We assessed quality of life and asthma control in atopic patients with allergic asthma and concomitant atopic dermatitis versus those with asthma and without atopic dermatitis treated with omalizumab.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 22 patients with severe allergic asthma were treated with omalizumab for 12 months. 13 patients with allergic asthma without concomitant atopic dermatitis (IgE 212 ± 224 IU/ml) and 9 patients with concomitant allergic asthma and atopic dermatitis (IgE 3,528 ± 2,723 IU/ml) were included. Asthma-related quality of life (AQLQ), atopic dermatitis related quality of life (DLQI), and asthma-related treatment were compared between both groups at baseline and after initiating omalizumab treatment.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>DLQI was significantly in favor of omalizumab after 2 months in the atopic dermatitis/asthma group (P = 0.01); AQLQ was improved after 6 months in the asthma group (P = 0.01), while no change was seen in AQLQ in the atopic dermatitis/asthma group (P = 0.12). Omalizumab controlled oral corticosteroid use more effective (P < 0.01) in patients with asthma and atopic dermatitis (in 9/9 cases) compared to patients with asthma alone (9/13). Baseline IgE as well as other factors do not predict response to omalizumab.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Omalizumab is effective in improving atopic dermatitis-related quality of life scores and modulates oral corticosteroid use in patients with concomitant asthma and atopic dermatitis in a positive fashion.</p

    Consumers’ reactions to nutrition and ingredient labelling for wine – A cross-country discrete choice experiment

    The purpose of this study is to examine consumers' reactions to the introduction of nutrition and ingredient labelling for wine, a product that is so far still exempt from mandatory nutrition and ingredient labelling. It also analyses the effect of positive and negative information about the use of ingredients in wine on consumers' choice. Representative samples for wine consumers from three distinctly different countries representing old and new wine markets (Australia, n = 745; Germany, n = 716; Italy, n = 715) completed a discrete choice experiment (DCE) with graphically simulated wine back labels. For each country, respondents were randomly allocated to a reference group and two different treatment conditions where they received newspaper-like information (positive, negative) before making choices. Results for the reference condition show that consumers across all three countries have a significant positive utility for detailed nutrition information. Instead, ingredient information only receives a positive utility in Italy, whereas German and Australian respondents do not receive utility from ingredient labelling. When consumers in the treatment group are confronted with negative media information the attribute importance of ingredients significantly increases across all three countries, clean labelled products without ingredients are preferred, and a significantly higher share of consumers in Germany and Italy prefer not to buy any wine. The treatment effect of positive media information on consumers’ wine choice is lower than that of negative information. The results of the study have implications for the pending new regulation of wine labelling and for communication strategies of the wine industry that should actively inform consumers about the necessity of ingredients in wine production

    Streamflow and precipitation data collected at and near Yucca Mountain, Nevada, during water years 1983--85, are presented in this report. The data were collected and compiled as part of the studies the US Geological Survey is making, in cooperation with the US Department of Energy, to characterize surface-water hydrology in the Yucca Mountain area. Streamflow data include daily mean discharges and peak discharges at 4 complete-record gaging stations and peak discharges at 10 crest-stage, partial-record stations and 12 miscellaneous sites. Precipitation data include cumulative totals at 12 stations maintained by the US Geological Survey and daily totals at 17 stations maintained by the Weather Service Nuclear Support Office, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

    Respiration, heartbeat, and conscious tactile perception

    Previous studies have shown that timing of sensory stimulation during the cardiac cycle interacts with perception. Given the natural coupling of respiration and cardiac activity, we investigated here their joint effects on tactile perception. Forty-one healthy female and male human participants reported conscious perception of finger near-threshold electrical pulses (33% null trials) and decision confidence while electrocardiography, respiratory activity, and finger photoplethysmography were recorded. Participants adapted their respiratory cycle to expected stimulus onsets to preferentially occur during late inspiration / early expiration. This closely matched heart rate variation (sinus arrhythmia) across the respiratory cycle such that most frequent stimulation onsets occurred during the period of highest heart rate probably indicating highest alertness and cortical excitability. Tactile detection rate was highest during the first quadrant after expiration onset. Inter-individually, stronger respiratory phase-locking to the task was associated with higher detection rates. Regarding the cardiac cycle, we confirmed previous findings that tactile detection rate was higher during diastole than systole and newly specified its minimum at 250 - 300 ms after the R-peak corresponding to the pulse wave arrival in the finger. Expectation of stimulation induced a transient heart deceleration which was more pronounced for unconfident decision ratings. Inter-individually, stronger post-stimulus modulations of heart rate were linked to higher detection rates. In summary, we demonstrate how tuning to the respiratory cycle and integration of respiratory-cardiac signals are used to optimize performance of a tactile detection task

    ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF MULLITE AND MULLITE-CONTAINING CERAMICS PART 1: THEORETICAL ASPECTS AND REVIEW OF MONOCRYSTAL DATA

    In this first part of a two-paper set on the elastic properties of mullite and mullite ceramics the current literature is reviewed and, based on the available monocrystal data, a mutually consistent average set of elastic constants for polycrystalline mullite materials at room temperature is calculated and optimized via minimization of the total average relative root mean square (RMS) deviation. Based on the results of this paper, the recommended values of adiabatic elastic constants are 224.9 GPa for the Young’s modulus, 87.8 GPa for the shear modulus, 170.9 GPa for the bulk modulus and 0.281 for the Poisson ratio. The RMS deviation of this set is lower than for any other set, and thus these values exhibit a high degree of mutual consistency with respect to the elasticity standard relations. Micromechanical upper bounds and model relations are summarized for describing the porosity dependence of elastic moduli, and a simple relation is used to estimate the difference between adiabatic and isothermal elastic constants. The results show that this difference increases slightly with temperature, but is not larger than 4 % even at 1500°C. In particular, for the Young’s modulus the difference remains below 0.5 %. That means, the difference between adiabatic and isothermal Young’s moduli will usually be unmeasurably small and negligible in practice

    On the strong impact of doping in the triangular antiferromagnet CuCrO2

    Electronic band structure calculations using the augmented spherical wave method have been performed for CuCrO2. For this antiferromagnetic (T_N = 24 K) semiconductor crystallizing in the delafossite structure, it is found that the valence band maximum is mainly due to the t_2g orbitals of Cr^3+ and that spin polarization is predicted with 3 mu_B per Cr^3+. The structural characterizations of CuCr1-xMgxO2 reveal a very limited range of Mg^2+ substitution for Cr^3+ in this series. As soon as x = 0.02, a maximum of 1% Cr ions substituted by Mg site is measured in the sample. This result is also consistent with the detection of Mg spinel impurities from X-ray diffraction for x = 0.01. This explains the saturation of the Mg^2+ effect upon the electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power observed for x > 0.01. Such a very weak solubility limit could also be responsible for the discrepancies found in the literature. Furthermore, the measurements made under magnetic field (magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient) support that the Cr^4+ "holes", created by the Mg^2+ substitution, in the matrix of high spin Cr^3+ (S = 3/2) are responsible for the transport properties of these compounds.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, more information at http://www.physik.uni-augsburg.de/~eyert
