    QAA subject benchmark statement architecture : version for consultation December 2019

    The Statement is intended to guide lecturers and course leaders in the design of academic courses leading to qualifications in architecture, it will also be useful to those developing other related courses. Higher education providers may need to consider other reference points in addition to this Statement in designing, delivering and reviewing courses. These may include requirements set out by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE). Providers may also need to consider industry or employer expectations. Individual higher education providers will decide how they use this information. The broad subject of architecture is both academic and vocational. The bachelor's award for architecture is the first stage of the typical education of an architect. This is typically either a BSc or a BA degree. The second stage of academic qualification is a master's level degree, typically in the form of a two-year MArch, which is defined as an undergraduate master's award. Architecture qualifications typically require a total of 360 (Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme, or CATS) credits at bachelor's level and 240 (CATS) credits within a master's level degree. While this may equate to five years of 120 (CATS) credits each, higher education providers may construct alternatives to enable flexibility in student learning. This Statement seeks to encapsulate the nature of a rich and diverse academic discipline. It is not intended to prescribe a curriculum, but rather describes the broad intellectual territory within which individual higher education providers will locate their courses of study in architecture

    Report of the Irish RN4CAST Studey 2009-2011: a nursing workforce under strain.

    Foreword: The RN4CAST consortium research study, funded by the European Commission, has provided a unique opportunity to gain insight into both organisational and nurse staffing issues across the acute hospital sector in Ireland. As part of the RN4CAST (Ireland) study, for the first time, both hospitals and medical and surgical units within thirty out of a possible thirty-one acute hospitals (with over one hundred beds) have been surveyed. Data were collected in 2009-2010. The work of the international consortium also enables comparisons of Irish findings with key findings internationally. For example it has proved possible to compare such issues as patient – to - nurse ratios and patient - to health care-staff ratios across the 12 partner countries of the consortium. This is also the case, for example, for nurse burnout levels, job satisfaction and nurse perceptions of safety and quality of care. RN4CAST (Ireland) provides a portrayal of the Irish acute hospital sector as operating in a context of dynamic challenge and change from both internal and external drivers. There is considerable evidence of significant strain on the nursing staff working in the sector. Nursing staff indicate concern regarding aspects of the quality and safety of patient care and the availability of sufficient staff and resources to do their job properly. We are of the view that unless these and a number of other issues raised in this report are managed effectively, there will be detrimental impacts on patient care, patient safety and retention and recruitment of high quality nursing staff for our health service

    Strength and endurance training reduces the loss of eccentric hamstring torque observed after soccer specific fatigue

    Objectives: To investigate the effect of two hamstring training protocols on eccentric peak torque before and after soccer specific fatigue. Participants: Twenty-two university male soccer players. Design: Isokinetic strength tests were performed at 60°/s pre and post fatigue, before and after 2 different training interventions. A 45-minute soccer specific fatigue modified BEAST protocol (M-BEAST) was used to induce fatigue. Players were randomly assigned to a 4 week hamstrings conditioning intervention with either a maximum strength (STR) or a muscle endurance (END) emphasis. Main outcome measures: The following parameters were evaluated:– Eccentric peak torque (EccPT), angle of peak torque (APT), and angle specific torques at knee joint angles of 10°, 20°, 30°, 40°, 50°, 60°, 70°, 80° and 90°. Results: There was a significant effect of the M-BEAST on the Eccentric torque angle profile before training as well as significant improvements in post-fatigue torque angle profile following the effects of both strength and muscle endurance interventions. Conclusions: Forty-five minutes of simulated soccer activity leads to reduced eccentric hamstring torque at longer muscle lengths. Short-term conditioning programs (4-weeks) with either a maximum strength or a muscular endurance emphasis can equally reduce fatigue induced loss of strength over this time period

    An efficient and extensible approach for compressing phylogenetic trees

    Biologists require new algorithms to efficiently compress and store their large collections of phylogenetic trees. TreeZip is a novel method for compressing phylogenetic trees. Recently, we extended our TreeZip algorithm to support branch lengths and show how it can be used to extract sets of trees of interest quickly. The key advantage of TreeZip over standard compression methods like 7zip is its ability to interpret and compress tree collections semantically, making it immune to branch rotations and allowing key operations (such calculating a consensus tree) to be performed quickly and without a loss of space savings. On unweighted phylogenetic trees, TreeZip is able to compress Newick files in excess of 98%. On weighted phylogenetic trees, TreeZip is able to compress a Newick file by at least 73%. TreeZip can be combined with 7zip with little overhead, allowing space savings in excess of 99 % (unweighted) and 92%(weighted). Unlike TreeZip, 7zip is not immune to branch rotations, and performs worse as the level of variability in the Newick string representation increases. Finally, since the TreeZip compressed text (TRZ) file contains all the semantic information in a collection of trees, we can easily filter and decompress a subset of trees of interest (such as the set of unique trees), or build the resulting consensus tree in a matter of seconds. We also show the ease of which set operations can be performed on TRZ files, at speeds quicker than those performed on Newick or 7zip compressed Newick files, and without loss of space savings. TreeZip is an efficient approach for compressing large collections of phylogenetic trees. The semantic and compact nature of the TRZ file allow it to be operated upon directly and quickly, without a need to decompress the original Newick file. We believe that TreeZip will be vital for compressing and archiving trees in the biological community.

    Molecular dynamics simulations of oscillatory Couette flows with slip boundary conditions

    The effect of interfacial slip on steady-state and time-periodic flows of monatomic liquids is investigated using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The fluid phase is confined between atomically smooth rigid walls, and the fluid flows are induced by moving one of the walls. In steady shear flows, the slip length increases almost linearly with shear rate. We found that the velocity profiles in oscillatory flows are well described by the Stokes flow solution with the slip length that depends on the local shear rate. Interestingly, the rate dependence of the slip length obtained in steady shear flows is recovered when the slip length in oscillatory flows is plotted as a function of the local shear rate magnitude. For both types of flows, the friction coefficient at the liquid-solid interface correlates well with the structure of the first fluid layer near the solid wall.Comment: 31 pages, 11 figure

    Aquatic community response to volcanic eruptions on the Ecuadorian Andean flank: evidence from the palaeoecological record

    Aquatic ecosystems in the tropical Andes are under increasing pressure from human modification of the landscape (deforestation and dams) and climatic change (increase of extreme events and 1.5 °C on average temperatures are projected for AD 2100). However, the resilience of these ecosystems to perturbations is poorly understood. Here we use a multi-proxy palaeoecological approach to assess the response of aquatic ecosystems to a major mechanism for natural disturbance, volcanic ash deposition. Specifically, we present data from two Neotropical lakes located on the eastern Andean flank of Ecuador. Laguna Pindo (1°27.132′S–78°04.847′W) is a tectonically formed closed basin surrounded by a dense mid-elevation forest, whereas Laguna Baños (0°19.328′S–78°09.175′W) is a glacially formed lake with an inflow and outflow in high Andean Páramo grasslands. In each lake we examined the dynamics of chironomids and other aquatic and semi-aquatic organisms to explore the effect of thick (> 5 cm) volcanic deposits on the aquatic communities in these two systems with different catchment features. In both lakes past volcanic ash deposition was evident from four large tephras dated to c.850 cal year BP (Pindo), and 4600, 3600 and 1500 cal year BP (Baños). Examination of the chironomid and aquatic assemblages before and after the ash depositions revealed no shift in composition at Pindo, but a major change at Baños occurred after the last event around 1500 cal year BP. Chironomids at Baños changed from an assemblage dominated by Pseudochironomus and Polypedilum nubifer-type to Cricotopus/Paratrichocladius type-II, and such a dominance lasted for approximately 380 years. We suggest that, despite potential changes in the water chemistry, the major effect on the chironomid community resulted from the thickness of the tephra being deposited, which acted to shallow the water body beyond a depth threshold. Changes in the aquatic flora and fauna at the base of the trophic chain can promote cascade effects that may deteriorate the ecosystem, especially when already influenced by human activities, such as deforestation and dams, which is frequent in the high Andes

    Relationships between speed, change of direction and jump performance with cricket specific speed tests in male academy cricketers

    Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between general speed and change of direction speed and‘cricket specific’ speed tests and the relationships between jump performance and speed and change of direction ability in male academy cricketers. Design and Methods: Sixteen academy male cricketers (age: 17 ± 0.7 years; height: 176.9 ± 6.2 cm; mass: 72.2 ± 13.2 kg) performed tests of 20 m sprint, 505 change of direction (COD) on both left and right legs, “quick single” with bat (WB) (17.68m), running-a-two WB, running-a-three WB, countermovement jump (CMJ), and drop jump (DJ). Results: Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC’s) revealed high within-session reliability for all tests (ICC ≥ 0.92; p ≤ 0.001),except 0-5 m (ICC = 0.642; p ≤ 0.001) and 0-10 m (ICC = 0.708; p ≤ 0.001) tests. General speed tests showed strong relationships to ‘cricket specific’ speed tests (20 m sprint - running-a-two; r = 0.951; p ≤ 0.01; 20 m sprint - running-a-three; r = 0.937; p ≤ 0.01; ‘quick single’; r = 0.951; p ≤ 0.01). Strong relationships were also observed between the 505 right foot COD times and all cricket specific tests (r = 0.909- 0.934; p ≤ 0.01). CMJ height showed the strongest correlations with: 20 m (r = -0.668;p ≤ 0.01); 505 left (r = -0.789; p ≤ 0.01); 505 right (r = -0.807; p ≤ 0.01); “quick single” WB (r = -0.739; p ≤ 0.01); running-a two WB (r = -0.742; p ≤ 0.01); running-a-three (WB) (r = -0.733; p ≤ 0.01). Conclusions: The findings suggest that general speed and COD tests are highly appropriate to assess cricket specific qualities in youth cricketers

    IGFBP-1 in Cardiometabolic Pathophysiology—Insights From Loss-of-Function and Gain-of-Function Studies in Male Mice

    We have previously reported that overexpression of human insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP)-1 in mice leads to vascular insulin sensitization, increased nitric oxide bioavailability, reduced atherosclerosis, and enhanced vascular repair, and in the setting of obesity improves glucose tolerance. Human studies suggest that low levels of IGFBP-1 are permissive for the development of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Here we seek to determine whether loss of IGFBP-1 plays a causal role in the predisposition to cardiometabolic disease. Metabolic phenotyping was performed in transgenic mice with homozygous knockout of IGFBP-1. This included glucose, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor I tolerance testing under normal diet and high-fat feeding conditions. Vascular phenotyping was then performed in the same mice using vasomotor aortic ring studies, flow cytometry, vascular wire injury, and angiogenesis assays. These were complemented with vascular phenotyping of IGFBP-1 overexpressing mice. Metabolic phenotype was similar in IGFBP-1 knockout and wild-type mice subjected to obesity. Deletion of IGFBP-1 inhibited endothelial regeneration following injury, suggesting that IGFBP-1 is required for effective vascular repair. Developmental angiogenesis was unaltered by deletion or overexpression of IGFBP-1. Recovery of perfusion following hind limb ischemia was unchanged in mice lacking or overexpressing IGFBP-1; however, overexpression of IGFBP-1 stimulated hindlimb perfusion and angiogenesis in insulin-resistant mice. These findings provide new insights into the role of IGFBP-1 in metabolic and vascular pathophysiology. Irrespective of whether loss of IGFBP-1 plays a causal role in the development of cardiometabolic disorders, increasing IGFBP-1 levels appears effective in promoting neovascularization in response to ischemia

    High resolution spatial modelling of greenhouse gas emissions from land use change to energy crops in the UK

    We implemented a spatial application of a previously evaluated model of soil GHG emissions, ECOSSE, in the United Kingdom to examine the impacts to 2050 of land-use transitions from existing land use, rotational cropland, permanent grassland or woodland, to six bioenergy crops; three ‘first-generation’ energy crops: oilseed rape, wheat and sugar beet, and three ‘second-generation’ energy crops: Miscanthus, short rotation coppice willow (SRC) and short rotation forestry poplar (SRF). Conversion of rotational crops to Miscanthus, SRC and SRF and conversion of permanent grass to SRF show beneficial changes in soil GHG balance over a significant area. Conversion of permanent grass to Miscanthus, permanent grass to SRF and forest to SRF shows detrimental changes in soil GHG balance over a significant area. Conversion of permanent grass to wheat, oilseed rape, sugar beet and SRC and all conversions from forest show large detrimental changes in soil GHG balance over most of the United Kingdom, largely due to moving from uncultivated soil to regular cultivation. Differences in net GHG emissions between climate scenarios to 2050 were not significant. Overall, SRF offers the greatest beneficial impact on soil GHG balance. These results provide one criterion for selection of bioenergy crops and do not consider GHG emission increases/decreases resulting from displaced food production, bio-physical factors (e.g. the energy density of the crop) and socio-economic factors (e.g. expenditure on harvesting equipment). Given that the soil GHG balance is dominated by change in soil organic carbon (SOC) with the difference among Miscanthus, SRC and SRF largely determined by yield, a target for management of perennial energy crops is to achieve the best possible yield using the most appropriate energy crop and cultivar for the local situation
