Properties of the non-Gaussian fixed point in 4D compact U(1) lattice gauge theory
We examine selected properties of the gauge-ball spectrum and fermionic
variables in the vicinity of the recently discussed non-Gaussian fixed point of
4D compact U(1) lattice gauge theory within the quenched approximation.
Approaching the critical point from within the confinement phase, our data
support scaling of gauge-ball states in units of the string tension
square root. The analysis of the chiral condensate within the framework of a
scaling form for the equation of state suggests non mean-field values for the
magnetic exponents and .Comment: 73K postscript fil
Universality of the gauge-ball spectrum of the four-dimensional pure U(1) gauge theory
We continue numerical studies of the spectrum of the pure U(1) lattice gauge
theory in the confinement phase, initiated in our previous work. Using the
extended Wilson action we address the question of universality of the phase
transition line in the () plane between the confinement and the
Coulomb phases. Our present results at for the gauge-ball
spectrum are fully consistent with the previous results obtained at . Again, two different correlation length exponents,
and , are obtained in different channels. We also confirm
the stability of the values of these exponents with respect to the variation of
the distance from the critical point at which they are determined. These
results further demonstrate universal critical behaviour of the model at least
up to correlation lengths of 4 lattice spacings when the phase transition is
approached in some interval at .Comment: 16 page
Network Transitivity and Matrix Models
This paper is a step towards a systematic theory of the transitivity
(clustering) phenomenon in random networks. A static framework is used, with
adjacency matrix playing the role of the dynamical variable. Hence, our model
is a matrix model, where matrices are random, but their elements take values 0
and 1 only. Confusion present in some papers where earlier attempts to
incorporate transitivity in a similar framework have been made is hopefully
dissipated. Inspired by more conventional matrix models, new analytic
techniques to develop a static model with non-trivial clustering are
introduced. Computer simulations complete the analytic discussion.Comment: 11 pages, 7 eps figures, 2-column revtex format, print bug correcte
A comprehensive lattice study of SU(3) glueballs
We present a study of the glueball spectrum for all values
at lattice spacings down to GeV () using lattices
of size up to . We extend previous studies and show that the continuum
limit has effectively been reached. The number of clearly identified
states has been substantially increased. There are no clear signals for
spin-exotic glueballs below 3 GeV. A comparison with current experimental
glueball candidates is made.Comment: 10 pages including 2 PS figures, Liverpool Preprint: LTH 303,

Frequent copy number gains of SLC2A3 and ETV1 in testicular embryonal carcinomas
Testicular germ cell tumours (TGCTs) appear as different histological subtypes or mixtures of these. They show similar, multiple DNA copy number changes, where gain of 12p is pathognomonic. However, few high-resolution analyses have been performed and focal DNA copy number changes with corresponding candidate target genes remain poorly described for individual subtypes. We present the first high-resolution DNA copy number aberration (CNA) analysis on the subtype embryonal carcinomas (ECs), including 13 primary ECs and 5 EC cell lines. We identified recurrent gains and losses and allele-specific CNAs. Within these regions, we nominate 30 genes that may be of interest to the EC subtype. By in silico analysis of data from 150 TGCTs from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), we further investigated CNAs, RNA expression, somatic mutations and fusion transcripts of these genes. Among primary ECs, ploidy ranged between 2.3 and 5.0, and the most common aberrations were DNA copy number gains at chromosome (arm) 7, 8, 12p, and 17, losses at 4, 10, 11, and 18, replicating known TGCT genome characteristics. Gain of whole or parts of 12p was found in all samples, including a highly amplified 100 kbp segment at 12p13.31, containing SLC2A3. Gain at 7p21, encompassing ETV1, was the second most frequent aberration. In conclusion, we present novel CNAs and the genes located within these regions, where the copy number gain of SLC2A3 and ETV1 are of interest, and which copy number levels also correlate with expression in TGCTs
Ecological management of cereal stemborers in African smallholder agriculture through behavioural manipulation
1. Africa faces serious challenges in feeding its rapidly growing human
population owing to the poor productivity of maize and sorghum, the most important
staple crops formillions of smallholder farmers in the continent, with yields being among
the lowest in the world.
2. A complex of lepidopterous stemborers attack cereals in Africa. However, their
effective control is difficult, largely as a result of the cryptic and nocturnal habits of
moths, and protection provided by host stem for immature pest stages. Moreover, current
control measures are uneconomical and impractical for resource-poor farmers.
3. An ecological approach, based on companion planting, known as ‘push–pull’,
provides effective management of these pests, and involves combined use of inter- and
trap cropping systems where stemborers are attracted and trapped on trap plants with
added economic value (‘pull’), and are driven away from the cereal crop by antagonistic
intercrops (‘push’).
4. Novel defence strategies inducible by stemborer oviposition have recently been
discovered, leading to the attraction of egg and larval parasitoids, in locally adapted
maize lines but not in elite hybrids. We also established that landscape complexity did
not improve the ecosystem service of biological control, but rather provided a disservice
by acting as a ‘source’ of stemborer pests colonising the crop.
5. Here we review and provide new data on the direct and indirect effects of the
push–pull approach on stemborers and their natural enemies, including the mechanisms
involved, and highlight opportunities for exploiting intrinsic plant defences and natural
ecosystem services in pest management in smallholder farming systems in Africa

Non-imaging optics for LED-lighting
In this report, several methods are investigated to rapidly compute the light intensity function, either in the far field or on a finite-distance screen, of light emanating from a light fixture with a given shape. Different shapes are considered, namely polygonal and (piecewise) smooth. In the first case, analytic methods are sought to circumvent the use of Monte Carlo methods and ray-tracing with large sample size. In the second case, refinements of the Monte Carlo method (notably using a bootstrap procedure) are devised to minimize the number of samples needed for a good approximation of the intensity function
