    Charge and CP symmetry breaking in two Higgs doublet models

    We show that, for the most generic model with two Higgs doublets possessing a minimum that preserves the U(1)emU(1)_{em} symmetry, charge breaking (CB) cannot occur. If CB does not occur, the potential could have two different minima, and there is in principle no general argument to show which one is the deepest. The depth of the potential at a stationary point that breaks CB or CP, relative to the U(1)emU(1)_{em} preserving minimum, is proportional to the squared mass of the charged or pseudoscalar Higgs, respectively

    A rapid, non-sacrificial chromosome preparation technique for freshwater teleosts

    The use of fin epithelium from the tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus, and the grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella, was investigated to provide a rapid, non-sacrificial procedure for determining ploidy. A combination of colchicine, prolonged hypotonic treatment, dissociation of cells followed by Giemsa staining makes it possible to achieve good quality metaphase chromosome spreads using small fish without the use of sterile conditions, centrifuges or sacrificing the specimen. In situations such as the induction of triploidy or tetraploidy, it is necessary to have a quick, reliable method of assessing the results of experimental design.     The study of the Rear foot mobility around the subtalar joint during running and jumping exercises, has been done since 1978. In epidemiological studies the amount of eversion (pronation) is often related to injuries on the mediolateral muscles an also to Tibialis and Achilles tendons injuries. Same experiments have been made to study the rearfoot mobility considering the action of muscles located around the subtalar and ankle joints. Stacoff et al. (1988) used one mechanical model that included mediolateral muscles, the maximal force of each muscles was considered to be function of is cross sectional area. Studies that integrate both, the cinematic analysis of the rearfoot mobility around the subtalar joint and the determination of EMG activation patterns of the muscles acting on the subtalar joints are uncommon. The purpose of this work is to study the EMG patterns of same of the leg muscles involved in ankle and subtalar movements, during action against the ground, in jumping exercises under increase stretching load, looking for possible relations with the cinematic analysis of subtalar movement during ground contact phase. Five adult elite sprinters performed drop jumps under three load conditions 40cm, 50cm and 70cm. On condition five trials were recorded allowing the use of average techniques. The signals from Force Plate, Knee and Ankle electrogoniometers, and surface EMG, were A/D converted at IOOOHz (Biopac-MP100). The EMGs of Gastrocnemius (GN), Soleus (SOL), Tibialis A. (TA) and Peronis L. (PL) were filtered, fullwave rectified and smoothed. The subjects foot and leg were filmed from behind at 50 framesls. The EMG patterns of extensor muscles under SSC conditions have three functional phases, Preactivation (before touchdown (TD), Reflexive Potenciation 30-100 ms after TD and Voluntary Activation, iEMGs of this phases were calculated. PL SOL and GN act almost simultaneously during ground contact, the a higher preactivation on the GN, could be explained by the higher rate of FastT. fibbers, greater crossectional area and is superficial position. The high level of preactivation on TA appears to be related with anticipation of the forced eversion occurring after touchdown, notice that TA works as extension antagonist. This amount of activation of TA on Touchdown could explain same of the stress related TA tendon injuries

    Cultivation and genetics of Artemisia annua L. for increased production of the antimalarial artemisinin

    Malaria has been treated for over 350 years with quinine and quinine-derived drugs. However, in several areas of the world, some strains of the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum have developed resistance against these drugs. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended the use of artemisinin-combination treatments (ACT) as the first-line treatment for multidrug-resistant falciparum malaria. The WHO estimates that current supplies of artemisinin are sufficient for only 30 million ACT, and is foreseeing the need for 130-220 million ACT in 2005 (WHO, 2004). Current research on the production of synthetic artemisinin-like compounds by the Roll Back Malaria project, pharmaceutical companies and academia resulted in a promising synthetic artemisinin-like compound (OZ277) which is currently undergoing phase I clinical trials. In about 5 years this drug is expected to be approved and made available to the public, however, meeting current global demands for ACT depends on the immediate availability of affordable artemisinin-derived drugs. This will involve expansion of the area under cultivation of Artemisia annua and improved methods of cultivation and processing of raw material, associated with more efficient methods for extraction and purification of artemisinin from plant material. This review addresses the agricultural, environmental and genetic aspects that may be useful in the successful large-scale cultivation of A. annua and for producing the antimalarial artemisinin in areas where it is urgently needed today. It also includes geographic aspects (latitude and altitude), which will help make decisions about crop establishment in tropical countries, and includes a list of Good Agricultural and Collection Practices for A. annu

    Neutral minima in two-Higgs doublet models

    We study the neutral minima of two-Higgs doublet models, showing that these potentials can have at least two such minima with different depths. We analyse the phenomenology of these minima for the several types of two-Higgs doublet potentials, where CP is explicitly broken, spontaneously broken or preserved. We discover that it is possible to have a neutral minimum in these potentials where the masses of the known particles have their standard values, with another deeper minimum where those same particles acquire different masses.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figure

    Asociación de cefalópodos y secuencias deposicionales en el Cenomaniense superior y Turoniense inferior de la Península Ibérica (España y Portugal)

    The comparison and correlation of the biostratigraphic successions identified in the upper Cenomanian and lower Turonian of the Iberian Trough (IT, Spain) and the Western Portuguese Carbonate Platform (WPCP, Portugal) allows differentiating nine cephalopod assemblages (1 to 9), with notably different taxa, and two (3rd order) depositional sequences (A and B). Some of these main intervals can be divided in minor ones, such as assemblage 4 (in 41 and 42) and sequence B (in B1 and B2). Assemblages 1 to 3 are related with sequence A, and assemblage 4 to 9 with sequence B (specifically, 4 to 6 with B1, and 7 to 9 with B2). The analysis and interpretation of these biostratigraphic data allows us to infer certain palaeoecologic turnovers that happened in the studied basins, both with external origin or due to local tectonic and palaeogeographical changes. Though partially altered by hypoxic phenomena (especially the sequence B1, assemblage 4) and local tectonics (mainly in the WPCP), in each of these cycles there were events of extinction of the cephalopods from shallow environments and survival of those from pelagic or deep environments, of settling of new environments, and of adaptation to them caused, successively, by intervals of low, ascending and high sea-level.La comparación y correlación de las sucesiones bioestratigráficas identificadas en el Cenomaniense superior y Turoniense inferior del Surco Ibérico (IT, España) y la Plataforma Carbonatada Occidental Portuguesa (WPCP, Portugal) permiten diferenciar nueve asociaciones de cefalópodos (1 a 9), con taxones notablemente diferentes, y dos secuencias deposicionales principales (3er orden) (A y B). Algunos de estos intervalos principales pueden dividirse en secundarios, como la Asociación 4 (en 41 and 42) y la Secuencia B (en B1 y B2). Las asociaciones 1 a 3 pueden se pueden relacionar con la secuencia A, y la asociación 4 a 9 con la secuencia la B (concretamente, 4 a 6 con B1, y 7 a 9 con B2). El análisis y la interpretación de estos datos bioestratigráficos permiten deducir ciertos cambios paleoecológicos sucedidos en las cuencas estudiadas, tanto de origen externo como debidos a la tectónica local ó a cambios paleogeográficos. Aunque parcialmente alterados por fenómenos de hipoxia (especialmente la secuencia B1, asociación 4) y de tectónica local (principalmente en el WPCP), en cada uno de estos ciclos se produjeron fenómenos de extinción de los cefalópodos de medios someros y de supervivencia de los de ambientes pelágicos ó profundos, de colonización de nuevos espacios, y de adaptación a los mismos provocados, sucesivamente, por intervalos de nivel de mar bajo, ascendente y alto

    Photoproduction of the charged top-pions at the LHeC

    The top triangle moose (TTM)(TTM) model, which can be seen as the deconstructed version of the topcolor-assisted technicolor (TC2TC2) model, predicts the existence of the charged top-pions πt± \pi_{t}^{\pm} in low energy spectrum. In the context of this model, we consider photoproduction of πt±\pi^{\pm}_{t} via the subprocesses γbtπt\gamma b\to t \pi_{t}^{-} and γbˉtˉπt+\gamma \bar{b}\to \bar{t} \pi_{t}^{+} at the large hadron-electron collider (LHeCLHeC), in which high energy photon beams are generated by using the Compton backscatting method. We find that, as long as the charged top-pions are not too heavy, they can be abundantly produced via γb\gamma b collision.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
