    Gas damping force noise on a macroscopic test body in an infinite gas reservoir

    We present a simple analysis of the force noise associated with the mechanical damping of the motion of a test body surrounded by a large volume of rarefied gas. The calculation is performed considering the momentum imparted by inelastic collisions against the sides of a cubic test mass, and for other geometries for which the force noise could be an experimental limitation. In addition to arriving at an accurated estimate, by two alternative methods, we discuss the limits of the applicability of this analysis to realistic experimental configurations in which a test body is surrounded by residual gas inside an enclosure that is only slightly larger than the test body itself.Comment: 8 pages. updated with correct translational damping coefficient for cylinder on axis. added cylinder orthogonal to symmetry axis, force and torque. slightly edited throughou

    Sensor noise in LISA Pathfinder: Laser frequency noise and its coupling to the optical test mass readout

    The LISA Pathfinder (LPF) mission successfully demonstrated the feasibility of the technology needed for the future space borne gravitational wave observatory LISA. A key subsystem under study was the laser interferometer, which measured the changes in relative distance in between two test masses (TMs). It achieved a sensitivity of 32.0+2.4−1.7  fm/√Hz, which was significantly better than the prelaunch tests. This improved performance allowed direct observation of the influence of laser frequency noise in the readout. The differences in optical path lengths between the measurement and reference beams in the individual interferometers of our setup determined the level of this undesired readout noise. Here, we discuss the dedicated experiments performed on LPF to measure these differences with high precision. We reached differences in path length difference between (368±5)  μm and (329.6±0.9)  μm which are significantly below the required level of 1 mm or 1000  μm. These results are an important contribution to our understanding of the overall sensor performance. Moreover, we observed varying levels of laser frequency noise over the course of the mission. We provide evidence that these do not originate from the laser frequency stabilization scheme which worked as expected. Therefore, this frequency stabilization would be applicable to other missions with similar laser frequency stability requirements

    Genetic loci influencing kidney function and chronic kidney disease

    Using genome-wide association, we identify common variants at 2p12-p13, 6q26, 17q23 and 19q13 associated with serum creatinine, a marker of kidney function (P = 10 10 to 10 15). Of these, rs10206899 (near NAT8, 2p12-p13) and rs4805834 (near SLC7A9, 19q13) were also associated with chronic kidney disease (P = 5.0 × 10 5 and P = 3.6 × 10 4, respectively). Our findings provide insight into metabolic, solute and drug-transport pathways underlying susceptibility to chronic kidney disease

    Preoperative medical treatment in Cushing's syndrome : frequency of use and its impact on postoperative assessment : data from ERCUSYN

    Background: Surgery is the definitive treatment of Cushing's syndrome (CS) but medications may also be used as a first-line therapy. Whether preoperative medical treatment (PMT) affects postoperative outcome remains controversial. Objective: (1) Evaluate how frequently PMT is given to CS patients across Europe; (2) examine differences in preoperative characteristics of patients who receive PMT and those who undergo primary surgery and (3) determine if PMT influences postoperative outcome in pituitary-dependent CS (PIT-CS). Patients and methods: 1143 CS patients entered into the ERCUSYN database from 57 centers in 26 countries. Sixty-nine percent had PIT-CS, 25% adrenal-dependent CS (ADR-CS), 5% CS from an ectopic source (ECT-CS) and 1% were classified as having CS from other causes (OTH-CS). Results: Twenty per cent of patients took PMT. ECT-CS and PIT-CS were more likely to receive PMT compared to ADR-CS (P < 0.001). Most commonly used drugs were ketoconazole (62%), metyrapone (16%) and a combination of both (12%). Median (interquartile range) duration of PMT was 109 (98) days. PIT-CS patients treated with PMT had more severe clinical features at diagnosis and poorer quality of life compared to those undergoing primary surgery (SX) (P < 0.05). Within 7 days of surgery, PIT-CS patients treated with PMT were more likely to have normal cortisol (P < 0.01) and a lower remission rate (P < 0.01). Within 6 months of surgery, no differences in morbidity or remission rates were observed between SX and PMT groups. Conclusions: PMT may confound the interpretation of immediate postoperative outcome. Follow-up is recommended to definitely evaluate surgical results

    Histocompatibility leucocyte antigens and closely linked immunomodulatory genes in autoimmune thyroid disease

    OBJECTIVES Associations between autoimmune thyroid disease and antigens of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) have long been recognized. Graves' disease (GD) is associated with the histocompatibility leucocyte antigen (HLA) haplotype A*01-B*0801-DRB1*0301-DQA1*0501-DQB1*0201 (or B8/DR3) whereas autoimmune hypothyroidism (AIH) has been weakly associated with HLA DRB1*03, *04 and *11/*12 alleles (or DR3, DR4 and DR5). However, the presence of important immunoregulatory genes within the HLA Class II and III regions raises the possibility that these genes harbour the primary susceptibility locus. This study examines genetic variation across the MHC in UK Caucasoid subjects with autoimmune thyroid disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS DNA extracted from venous blood samples from 215 patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (GD 135, AIH 77) and 267 control subjects was analysed. Genotyping was performed using polymerase chain reaction and sequence specific primers for HLA Class I and II alleles and polymorphisms within the TAP1, TAP2, tumour necrosis factor (TNF), lymphotoxin α (LTα), heat shock protein (HSP)70-1, HSP70-2 and HSP70-Hom genes. RESULTS For GD, the strongest association was with DRB1*03 [56% patients positive vs. 24% controls, P = 2 × 10−10, odds ratio (OR) 4·0]. Positive associations were also seen for DRB1*03 linked alleles, B*0801, DRB3*01/02, DQA1*05, DQB1*02 and DPB1*0101 (OR 2·3–3·4). Specific TNF and LTα alleles were strongly associated with GD (Pc = 3 × 10−5 and 0·001) and weak associations were seen for HSP70-1 + 190C and HSP70-2 + 1267G polymorphisms (Pc = 0·05 and 0·01). These associations were not significant when DRB1*03 status was considered. Patients with AIH showed only a weak association with DQB1*03 (P = 0·02). CONCLUSIONS These results show that, of the polymorphisms tested within the MHC, GD is most strongly associated with DRB1*03, and associations with other immunoregulatory genes previously described in Caucasian subjects most likely reflect linkage disequilibrium. AIH differs from GD, being less influenced by the MHC region
