Are high-lysine cereal crops still a challenge?

The essential amino acids lysine and threonine are synthesized in higher plants via a pathway starting with aspartate that also leads to the formation of methionine and isoleucine. Lysine is one of most limiting amino acids in plants consumed by humans and livestock. Recent genetic, molecular, and biochemical evidence suggests that lysine synthesis and catabolism are regulated by complex mechanisms. Early kinetic studies utilizing mutants and transgenic plants that over-accumulate lysine have indicated that the major step for the regulation of lysine biosynthesis is at the enzyme dihydrodipicolinate synthase. Despite this tight regulation, recent strong evidence indicates that lysine catabolism is also subject to control, particularly in cereal seeds. The challenge of producing crops with a high-lysine concentration in the seeds appeared to be in sight a few years ago. However, apart from the quality protein maize lines currently commercially available, the release of high-lysine crops has not yet occurred. We are left with the question, is the production of high-lysine crops still a challenge?98599

Mining association rules for label ranking

Lecture Notes in Computer Science Volume 6635, 2011.Recently, a number of learning algorithms have been adapted for label ranking, including instance-based and tree-based methods. In this paper, we continue this line of work by proposing an adaptation of association rules for label ranking based on the APRIORI algorithm. Given that the original APRIORI algorithm does not aim to obtain predictive models, two changes were needed for this achievement. The adaptation essentially consists of using variations of the support and confidence measures based on ranking similarity functions that are suitable for label ranking. Additionally we propose a simple greedy method to select the parameters of the algorithm. We also adapt the method to make a prediction from the possibly con icting consequents of the rules that apply to an example. Despite having made our adaptation from a very simple variant of association rules for classification, partial results clearly show that the method is making valid predictions. Additionally, they show that it competes well with state-of-the-art label ranking algorithms. This work was partially supported by project Rank! Excised roots obtained from 8 varieties of rice (IAC-164, 165 and 1246, Batatais, Caqui, Dourado Precoce, 90 Dias and Senbon) were used to study the kinetics of P uptake. Three cultivars (IAC-164, 90 Dias and Senbon) were employed in an experiment designed to compare root and leaf uptake and to evaluate the long distance transport. The main conclusions were as follows: a) after 180 minutes of contact with the external solution the uptake reached a maximum in the case of varieties IAC-164 and 165 , 90 Dias and Dourado Precoce; the same took place with the remaining cultivars after 240 minutes; b) the best fitting for individual varieties was obtained by using eiter potential or exponential models of adjustment wherein time was the independent variable and rate of uptake was the dependent one. c) IAC-164 and IAC-165 showed the highest efficiency of absorption while Dourado Precoce and 90 dias showed the lowest one. d) some evidence for the operation of a dual uptake mechanism was obtained when data from all varieties were put together; e) root absorption was usually higher than foliar uptake.

Hematological and biochemical parameters, including plasma electrolytes and thyroid hormones, were determined in 73 clinically healthy Churra-da-Terra-Quente ewes, a typical breed from the northeast of Portugal. The hemogram values were: erythrocytes 9.8±1.51012/L; haemoglobin 118.1±19.1g/L; haematocrit 40.8±5.9%; leukocytes 5.7±1.8109/L; and platelets 544.3±177.2109/L. The thrombin time was 17.3±1.7 seconds. The values of biochemical parameters were: total protein 76.4±6.1g/L; glucose 2.87±0.60mmol/L; total cholesterol 1.65±0.33mmol/L; aspartate aminotransferase 155.9±49.2U/L; alanine aminotransferase 23.2±9.6U/L; γ-glutamyl transferase 48.0±18.7U/L; total alkaline phosphatase 121.6±76.1U/L; glutamate dehydrogenase 6.4±3.7U/L; urea 7.32±2.22mmol/L; creatinine 123.0±54.1μmol/L; total calcium 2.53±0.25mmol/L; phosphorus 2.10±0.46mmol/L; magnesium 1.01±0.09mmol/L; sodium 152.04±3.65mmol/L; potassium 4.7±0.4mmol/L; ionized calcium 1.32±0.07mmol/L; total thyroxine 111.75±42.29nmol/L; total triiodothyronine 1.01±0.28nmol/L; free T4 11.93±1.78pmol/L; free T3 4.22±1.33pmol/L; and thyroid-stimulating hormone 0.18±0.19μIU/mL. Although differences among the Churra-da-Terra-Quente breed and other breeds may occur, the hematological and biochemical parameters, plasma electrolytes, and thyroid hormones, for this indigenous breed, were generally situated within the reference intervals previously reported for sheep
