Local strong solutions of a parabolic system related to the Boussinesq approximation for buoyancy-driven flow with viscous heating
We propose a modification of the classical Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq system of equations, which governs buoyancy-driven flows of viscous, incompressible fluids. This modification is motivated by unresolved issues regarding the global solvability of the classical system in situations where viscous heating cannot be neglected. A simple model problem leads to a coupled system of two parabolic equations with a source term involving the square of the gradient of one of the unknowns. In the present paper, we establish the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for the model problem. The full system of equations and the global-in-time existence of weak solutions will be addressed in forthcoming work
Conformal invariant functionals of immersions of tori into R^3
We show, that higher analogs of the Willmore functional, defined on the space
of immersions M^2\rightarrow R^3, where M^2 is a two-dimensional torus, R^3 is
the 3-dimensional Euclidean space are invariant under conformal transformations
of R^3. This hypothesis was formulated recently by I.A.Taimanov
(dg-ga/9610013).
Higher analogs of the Willmore functional are defined in terms of the
Modified Novikov-Veselov hierarchy. This soliton hierarchy is associated with
the zero-energy scattering problem for the two-dimensional Dirac operator.Comment: 34 pages, LaTeX, amssym.def macros use
Celestial mechanics of elastic bodies
We construct time independent configurations of two gravitating elastic
bodies. These configurations either correspond to the two bodies moving in a
circular orbit around their center of mass or strictly static configurations.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, several typos removed, erratum appeared in

Coupled cavities for enhancing the cross-phase modulation in electromagnetically induced transparency
We propose an optical double-cavity resonator whose response to a signal is
similar to that of an Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) medium. A
combination of such a device with a four-level EIT medium can serve for
achieving large cross-Kerr modulation of a probe field by a signal field. This
would offer the possibility of building a quantum logic gate based on photonic
qubits. We discuss the technical requirements that are necessary for realizing
a probe-photon phase shift of Pi caused by a single-photon signal. The main
difficulty is the requirement of an ultra-low reflectivity beamsplitter and to
operate a sufficiently dense cool EIT medium in a cavity.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, REVTeX, to appear in Phys. Rev. A (v2 - minor

Density functional theory and demixing of binary hard rod-polymer mixtures
A density functional theory for a mixture of hard rods and polymers modeled
as chains built of hard tangent spheres is proposed by combining the functional
due to Yu and Wu for the polymer mixtures [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 117}, 2368
(2002)] with the Schmidt's functional [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 63}, 50201 (2001)] for
rod-sphere mixtures. As a simple application of the functional, the demixing
transition into polymer-rich and rod-rich phases is examined. When the chain
length increases, the phase boundary broadens and the critical packing fraction
decreases. The shift of the critical point of a demixing transition is most
noticeable for short chains.Comment: 4 pages,2 figures, in press, PR
Quantum non-demolition (QND) modulation of quantum interference
We propose an experiment where quantum interference between two different
paths is modulated by means of a QND measurement on one or both the arm of the
interferometer. The QND measurement is achieved in a Kerr cell. We illustrate a
scheme for the realisation of this experiment and some further developments.Comment: accepted for publicatio

Gauge Thresholds and Kaehler Metrics for Rigid Intersecting D-brane Models
The gauge threshold corrections for globally consistent Z2 x Z2' orientifolds
with rigid intersecting D6-branes are computed. The one-loop corrections to the
holomorphic gauge kinetic function are extracted and the Kaehler metrics for
the charged chiral multiplets are determined up to two constants.Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure; v2: minor modifications, version to appear in

Role of Brans-Dicke Theory with or without self-interacting potential in cosmic acceleration
In this work we have studied the possibility of obtaining cosmic acceleration
in Brans-Dicke theory with varying or constant (Brans- Dicke
parameter) and with or without self-interacting potential, the background fluid
being barotropic fluid or Generalized Chaplygin Gas. Here we take the power law
form of the scale factor and the scalar field. We show that accelerated
expansion can also be achieved for high values of for closed Universe.Comment: 12 Latex pages, 20 figures, RevTex styl
