Solitons and Vertex Operators in Twisted Affine Toda Field Theories
Affine Toda field theories in two dimensions constitute families of
integrable, relativistically invariant field theories in correspondence with
the affine Kac-Moody algebras. The particles which are the quantum excitations
of the fields display interesting patterns in their masses and coupling and
which have recently been shown to extend to the classical soliton solutions
arising when the couplings are imaginary. Here these results are extended from
the untwisted to the twisted algebras. The new soliton solutions and their
masses are found by a folding procedure which can be applied to the affine
Kac-Moody algebras themselves to provide new insights into their structures.
The relevant foldings are related to inner automorphisms of the associated
finite dimensional Lie group which are calculated explicitly and related to
what is known as the twisted Coxeter element. The fact that the twisted affine
Kac-Moody algebras possess vertex operator constructions emerges naturally and

On a generalised bootstrap principle
The S-matrices for non-simply-laced affine Toda field theories are considered
in the context of a generalised bootstrap principle. The S-matrices, and in
particular their poles, depend on a parameter whose range lies between the
Coxeter numbers of dual pairs of the corresponding non-simply-laced algebras.
It is proposed that only odd order poles in the physical strip with positive
coefficients throughout this range should participate in the bootstrap. All
other singularities have an explanation in principle in terms of a generalised
Coleman-Thun mechanism. Besides the S-matrices introduced by Delius, Grisaru
and Zanon, the missing case (), is also considered and

Enhanced Fusion-Evaporation Cross Sections in Neutron-Rich Sn on Ni
Evaporation residue cross sections have been measured with neutron-rich
radioactive Sn beams on Ni in the vicinity of the Coulomb
barrier. The average beam intensity was particles per second
and the smallest cross section measured was less than 5 mb. Large subbarrier
fusion enhancement was observed. Coupled-channels calculations taking into
account inelastic excitation and neutron transfer underpredict the measured

We study tensor products of fundamental representations of Yangians and show
that the fundamental quotients of such tensor products are given by Dorey's

Evidence for Shape Co-existence at medium spin in 76Rb
Four previously known rotational bands in 76Rb have been extended to moderate
spins using the Gammasphere and Microball gamma ray and charged particle
detector arrays and the 40Ca(40Ca,3pn) reaction at a beam energy of 165 MeV.
The properties of two of the negative-parity bands can only readily be
interpreted in terms of the highly successful Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model
calculations if they have the same configuration in terms of the number of g9/2
particles, but they result from different nuclear shapes (one near-oblate and
the other near-prolate). These data appear to constitute a unique example of
shape co-existing structures at medium spins.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters
Uniform algebras and approximation on manifolds
Let be a bounded domain and let be a uniform algebra generated by a set
of holomorphic and pluriharmonic functions. Under natural assumptions on
and we show that the only obstruction to is that there is a holomorphic disk such that all functions in are holomorphic on , i.e., the
only obstruction is the obvious one. This generalizes work by A. Izzo. We also
have a generalization of Wermer's maximality theorem to the (distinguished
boundary of the) bidisk
Optical Spectra of SNR Candidates in NGC 300
We present moderate-resolution (<5A) long-slit optical spectra of 51 nebular
objects in the nearby Sculptor Group galaxy NGC 300 obtained with the 2.3 meter
Advanced Technology Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory, Australia. Adopting
the criterion of [SII]/Ha>=0.4 to confirm supernova remnants (SNRs) from
optical spectra, we find that of 28 objects previously proposed as SNRs from
optical observations, 22 meet this criterion with six showing [SII]/Ha of less
than 0.4. Of 27 objects suggested as SNRs from radio data, four are associated
with the 28 previously proposed SNRs. Of these four, three (included in the 22
above) meet the criterion. In all, 22 of the 51 nebular objects meet the
[SII]/Ha criterion as SNRs while the nature of the remaining 29 objects remains
