    Osmotic dehydration of litchi pulp as a pretreatment for drying processes

    Effects of osmotic dehydration on mass transfer properties such as water loss (W), solute gain (S) and weight reduction (G) during osmotic dehydration were investigated in order to determine the usefulness of this technique as pre-treatment for further drying of litchi pulp.  The effects of variations in sucrose (50% and 60 % w/w) and salt concentrations (10% w/w), solution temperature, and length of immersion time on the moisture removal of the product and its organoleptic characteristics’ on osmosis were analyzed.  About 80% of the water loss occurred between 4-6 h under most of the conditions.  Longer treatment time in high concentrations of sucrose resulted in a very soft product, which is difficult to handle and unsuitable for further drying.  Increasing concentration at the same temperature did not cause significant increments in weight change.  After osmotic treatment, the pulp was dried in a tray dryer at 70℃ for 10 h.  Osmotic treatment was responsible for increasing drying rate in a subsequent convective tray drying. Keywords: osmotic dehydration, cabinet drying, rehydration ratio, pretreatment, solute gain, weight loss&nbsp

    A simple, versatile laser system for the creation of ultracold ground state molecules

    Paper Part of Focus on New Frontiers of Cold Molecules Research A narrow-linewidth, dual-wavelength laser system is vital for the creation of ultracold ground state molecules via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) from a weakly bound Feshbach state. Here we describe how a relatively simple apparatus consisting of a single fixed-length optical cavity can be used to narrow the linewidth of the two different wavelength lasers required for STIRAP simultaneously. The frequency of each of these lasers is referenced to the cavity and is continuously tunable away from the cavity modes through the use of non-resonant electro-optic modulators. Self-heterodyne measurements suggest the laser linewidths are reduced to several 100 Hz. In the context of 87Rb133Cs molecules produced via magnetoassociation on a Feshbach resonance, we demonstrate the performance of the laser system through one- and two-photon molecular spectroscopy. Finally, we demonstrate transfer of the molecules to the rovibrational ground state using STIRAP

    Self-similarity and novel sample-length-dependence of conductance in quasiperiodic lateral magnetic superlattices

    We study the transport of electrons in a Fibonacci magnetic superlattice produced on a two-dimensional electron gas modulated by parallel magnetic field stripes arranged in a Fibonacci sequence. Both the transmission coefficient and conductance exhibit self-similarity and the six-circle property. The presence of extended states yields a finite conductivity at infinite length, that may be detected as an abrupt change in the conductance as the Fermi energy is varied, much as a metal-insulator transition. This is a unique feature of transport in this new kind of structure, arising from its inherent two-dimensional nature.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, revtex, important revisions made. to be published in Phys.     Measurement of the binding energy of ultracold 87Rb133Cs molecules using an offset-free optical frequency comb

    We report the binding energy of Rb87Cs133 molecules in their rovibrational ground state measured using an offset-free optical frequency comb based on difference frequency generation technology. We create molecules in the absolute ground state using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) with a transfer efficiency of 88%. By measuring the absolute frequencies of our STIRAP lasers, we find the energy-level difference from an initial weakly bound Feshbach state to the rovibrational ground state with a resolution of ∌5 kHz over an energy-level difference of more than 114THz; this lets us discern the hyperfine splitting of the ground state. Combined with theoretical models of the Feshbach-state binding energies and ground-state hyperfine structure, we determine a zero-field binding energy of h×114268135.24(4)(3)MHz. To our knowledge, this is the most accurate determination to date of the dissociation energy of a molecule

    New early Eocene tapiromorph perissodactyls from the Ghazij Formation of Pakistan, with implications for mammalian biochronology in Asia

    Early Eocene mammals from Indo-Pakistan have only recently come under study. Here we describe the first tapiromorph perissodactyls from the subcontinent. Gandheralophus minor n. gen. and n. sp. and G. robustus n. sp. are two species of Isectolophidae differing in size and in reduction of the anterior dentition. Gandheralophus is probably derived from a primitive isectolophid such as Orientolophus hengdongensis from the earliest Eocene of China, and may be part of a South Asian lineage that also contains Karagalax from the middle Eocene of Pakistan. Two specimens are referred to a new, unnamed species of Lophialetidae. Finally, a highly diagnostic M3 and a molar fragment are described as the new eomoropid chalicothere Litolophus ghazijensis sp. nov. The perissodactyls described here, in contrast to most other mammalian groups published from the early Eocene of Indo-Pakistan, are most closely related to forms known from East and Central Asia. Tapiromorpha are diverse and biochronologically important in the Eocene there and our results allow the first biochronological correlation between early Eocene mammal faunas in Indo-Pakistan and the rest of Asia. We suggest that the upper Ghazij Formation of Pakistan is best correlated with the middle or late part of the Bumbanian Asian Land-Mammal Age, while the Kuldana and Subathu Formations of Pakistan and India are best correlated with the Arshantan Asian Land-Mammal Age

    Formation mechanism of electrical discharge TiC-Fe composite coatings

    Comparison of electric discharge (ED) processed single deposit and continuum TiC-Fe cermet coatings, formed from a sacrificial powder metallurgy TiC tool electrode at negative polarity, on 304 stainless steel, provided insight into the ED coating (EDC) formation mechanism. A deposit from a single spark event was dominated by TiC, phase separated from a ∌2 wt% Fe matrix, with strongly aligned grains and banded microstructure, indicative of solidification from the coating/substrate interface. Conversely, a continuum coating, subjected to ∌200 spark events per location, exhibited a more complex, banded microstructure, with a mixture of equiaxed and columnar TiC grains within a ∌30 wt% Fe-based matrix, along with some concentrations of carbon from the oil dielectric. It is considered that each sparking event remelts previously solidified coating material, with or without further TiC particle incorporation, leading to gradual TiC dilution and the development of a TiC-Fe composite coating with increasing levels of substrate material forming the matrix

    Magnetic anomalies in the spin chain system, Sr3_3Cu1−x_{1-x}Znx_xIrO6_6

    We report the results of ac and dc magnetization (M) and heat-capacity (C) measurements on the solid solution, Sr3_3Cu1−x_{1-x}Znx_xIrO6_6. While the Zn end member is known to form in a rhombohedral pseudo one-dimensional K4_4CdCl6_6 structure with an antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of (TN_N =) 19 K, the Cu end member has been reported to form in a monoclinically distorted form with a Curie temperature of (TC_C =) 19 K. The magnetism of the Zn compound is found to be robust to synthetic conditions and is broadly consistent with the behavior known in the literature. However, we find a lower magnetic ordering temperature (To_o) for our Cu compound (~ 13 K), thereby suggesting that To_o is sensitive to synthetic conditions. The Cu sample appears to be in a spin-glass-like state at low temperatures, judged by a frequency dependence of ac magnetic susceptibility and a broadening of the C anomaly at the onset of magnetic ordering, in sharp contrast to earlier proposals. Small applications of magnetic field, however, drive this system to ferromagnetism as inferred from the M data. Small substitutions for Cu/Zn (x = 0.75 or 0.25) significantly depress magnetic ordering; in other words, To_o varies non-monotonically with x (To_o ~ 6, 3 and 4 K for x = 0.25, 0.5, and 0.67 respectively). The plot of inverse susceptibility versus temperature is non-linear in the paramagnetic state as if correlations within (or among) the magnetic chains continuously vary with temperature.     Intra-event characteristics of extreme erosive rainfall on Mauritius

    Mauritius is a typical tropical volcanic island with a raised interior where extreme rainfall events generate the bulk of the erosivity. Intra-event characteristics of the 120 highest erosive events at six selected locations between 2004 and 2008 were analysed to provide the first detailed intra-storm data for a tropical island environment. On Mauritius, spatial variation is evident in the characteristics of the extreme erosive rainfall recorded at the stations, with a noticeable increase in rainfall depth, duration, kinetic energy and erosivity of extreme events with altitude. Extreme events in the raised interior (central plateau) show a high variability in peak intensity over time as well as a higher percentage of events with the greatest intensities in the latter part of the event. Intra-event distribution of rainfall in the interior of the island shows that rainfall has a higher potential to exceed infiltration rates as well as the ability to generate high peak runoff rates and substantial soil loss.
