Self-trapped Exciton and Franck-Condon Spectra Predicted in LaMnO
Because the ground state has cooperative Jahn-Teller order, electronic
excitations in LaMnO are predicted to self-trap by local rearrangement of
the lattice. The optical spectrum should show a Franck-Condon series, that is,
a Gaussian envelope of vibrational sidebands. Existing data are reinterpreted
in this way. The Raman spectrum is predicted to have strong multiphonon

It is shown that the recently observed bifurcation seen in
superdeformed nuclear bands is also occurring in rotational bands of diatomic
molecules. In addition, signs of a bifurcation, of the same order
of magnitude as the one, are observed both in superdeformed

Competition between decay and dissociation of core-excited OCS studied by X-ray scattering
We show the first evidence of dissociation during resonant inelastic soft
X-ray scattering. Carbon and oxygen K-shell and sulfur L-shell resonant and
non-resonant X-ray emission spectra were measured using monochromatic
synchrotron radiation for excitation and ionization. After sulfur, L2,3 ->
{\pi}*, {\sigma}* excitation, atomic lines are observed in the emission spectra
as a consequence of competition between de-excitation and dissociation. In
contrast the carbon and oxygen spectra show weaker line shape variations and no
atomic lines. The spectra are compared to results from ab initio calculations
and the discussion of the dissociation paths is based on calculated potential

Ecto-5′-Nucleotidase: A Candidate Virulence Factor in Streptococcus sanguinis Experimental Endocarditis
Streptococcus sanguinis is the most common cause of infective endocarditis (IE). Since the molecular basis of virulence of this oral commensal bacterium remains unclear, we searched the genome of S. sanguinis for previously unidentified virulence factors. We identified a cell surface ecto-5′-nucleotidase (Nt5e), as a candidate virulence factor. By colorimetric phosphate assay, we showed that S. sanguinis Nt5e can hydrolyze extracellular adenosine triphosphate to generate adenosine. Moreover, a nt5e deletion mutant showed significantly shorter lag time (P<0.05) to onset of platelet aggregation than the wild-type strain, without affecting platelet-bacterial adhesion in vitro (P = 0.98). In the absence of nt5e, S. sanguinis caused IE (4 d) in a rabbit model with significantly decreased mass of vegetations (P<0.01) and recovered bacterial loads (log10CFU, P = 0.01), suggesting that Nt5e contributes to the virulence of S. sanguinis in vivo. As a virulence factor, Nt5e may function by (i) hydrolyzing ATP, a pro-inflammatory molecule, and generating adenosine, an immunosuppressive molecule to inhibit phagocytic monocytes/macrophages associated with valvular vegetations. (ii) Nt5e-mediated inhibition of platelet aggregation could also delay presentation of platelet microbicidal proteins to infecting bacteria on heart valves. Both plausible Nt5e-dependent mechanisms would promote survival of infecting S. sanguinis. In conclusion, we now show for the first time that streptococcal Nt5e modulates S. sanguinis-induced platelet aggregation and may contribute to the virulence of streptococci in experimental IE
Enhanced Electron Pairing in a Lattice of Berry Phase Molecules
We show that electron hopping in a lattice of molecules possessing a Berry
phase naturally leads to pairing. Our building block is a simple molecular site
model inspired by C, but realized in closer similarity with Na. In
the resulting model electron hopping must be accompanied by orbital operators,
whose function is to switch on and off the Berry phase as the electron number
changes. The effective hamiltonians (electron-rotor and electron-pseudospin)
obtained in this way are then shown to exhibit a strong pairing phenomenon, by
means of 1D linear chain case studies. This emerges naturally from numerical
studies of small -site rings, as well as from a BCS-like mean-field theory
formulation. The pairing may be explained as resulting from the exchange of
singlet pairs of orbital excitations, and is intimately connected with the
extra degeneracy implied by the Berry phase when the electron number is odd.
The relevance of this model to fullerides, to other molecular superconductors,
as well as to present and future experiments, is discussed.Comment: 30 pages, RevTe
Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya antisymmetric exchange coupling in cuprates: Oxygen effects
We revisit a problem of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya antisymmetric exchange coupling
for a single bond in cuprates specifying the local spin-orbital contributions
to Dzyaloshinsky vector focusing on the oxygen term. The Dzyaloshinsky vector
and respective weak ferromagnetic moment is shown to be a superposition of
comparable and, sometimes, competing local Cu and O contributions. The
intermediate oxygen O Knight shift is shown to be an effective tool to
inspect the effects of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya coupling in an external magnetic
field. We predict the effect of oxygen weak antiferromagnetism in
edge-shared CuO chains due to uncompensated oxygen Dzyaloshinsky vectors.
Finally, we revisit the effects of symmetric spin anisotropy, in particular,
those directly induced by Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya coupling.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, submitted to JET
How the Kano model contributes to Kansei engineering in services
Recent studies show that products and services hold great appeal if they are attractively designed to elicit emotional feelings from customers. Kansei engineering (KE) has good potential to provide a competitive advantage to those able to read and translate customer affect and emotion in actual product and services. This study introduces an integrative framework of the Kano model and KE, applied to services. The Kano model was used and inserted into KE to exhibit the relationship between service attribute performance and customer emotional response. Essentially, the Kano model categorises service attribute quality into three major groups (must-be [M], one-dimensional [O] and attractive [A]). The findings of a case study that involved 100 tourists who stayed in luxury 4- and 5-star hotels are presented. As a practical matter, this research provides insight on which service attributes deserve more attention with regard to their significant impact on customer emotional needs.
Statement of Relevance: Apart from cognitive evaluation, emotions and hedonism play a big role in service encounters. Through a focus on delighting qualities of service attributes, this research enables service providers and managers to establish the extent to which they prioritise their improvement efforts and to always satisfy their customer emotions beyond expectation.
